People keep asking why Hank stayed in the parking instead of driving off. I believe he had to find out if it was real or not. It was better to do it there than at home with his wife.

I remember reading a decent thread about this, and someone, possibly talking out of their as*, stated that he couldn't do much else under the circumstances. In real life, say, he would have been trained to establish the threat and take action. Again, I have no clue if this is true or not 😅

@Gunleaver
@Gunleaver 6 ай бұрын
Maple is right about Walt's need to feel superior, but I think with Gale, the relationship really is perfect, because Gale is so in awe of his abilities and looks up to him so much, and he really is not an intellectual threat. He's an eager student, who is also very smart and skilled, and that makes his praise and fawning so much more gratifying to Walt. If even Gale learned enough to surpass Walt as a chemist, his personality and character are such that Walt would still be the alpha in their relationship. Plus, he makes a far more respectable scientific colleague than Jesse. The show is not just about brains, but power and Walt has been fuming for years at his lack of power. That's what is going in in his relationship with Jesse this season, he's not really disgusted at Jesse's stupidity, he's simply flexing his power. He was not really threatened by Jesse's skill at cooking when he showed Walt his own batch, it was that he did it just when Walt was feeling impotent and neutered by Skyler's fling with Ted, and his making a fool of himself with the principal and his subsequent firing. He had to lash out and punish someone, and Jesse unfortunately showed his face at the wrong moment. Then his flexing when he was hired by Gus was more of the same. Gale, on the other hand, is a nebbish pushover. He is the very image of how other people saw Walt before he broke bad. Even if he got so good that he could surpass Walt's cooking skills, Walt would still feel like he was the dominant one in their partnership, that he could still lord it over Gale and push him into the background the way he was in his own family. The only real issue would be Gus choosing Gale over Walt, and kicking him to the curb, but that does not seem likely, since Gu already had Gale and still pursued Walt, even playing games with buying Jesse's cook to get Walt on board. So, again. Gale is Walt's perfect sidekick, or exactly what Walt's worst impulses desire in a partner. The drama of this episode is Walt having to cut Gale loose to bring on Jesse, that he has backed himself into a corner where he has to give up what he wants, just as his criminality has cost him his family.
@DDsportsmart13

You make some good points.. hard to tell which side ur on but I definitely think Walt cuts gale loose 100 percent to help hank and zero to do with wanting to control someone or the fear that jesse might get caught. I think that's what ur leaning towards also?
@Gunleaver
@Gunleaver 6 ай бұрын
@@DDsportsmart13 To help Hank AND Jesse. As smart as he is, he has to know that the real danger in Jesse's threat is that he is placing himself square on the tracks in front of the Gus Fring freight train. He is talking about selling meth in competition with Gus, and flipping on a member of Gus' organization. Either of those actions is enough to get him killed by Mike, Victor & company. He's not an arch nemesis gloating his evil plan, he's an ex threatening self-harm to hurt his old partner. So, yeah. Walt's denigration & dismissal of Gale is all about Jesse & Hank and not at all a problem with Gale. As for sides, I don't see that there are sides here.

All Jesse wanted was for Walt to be proud of him and his he applied himself and since he got mad and jealous and cut him down it crushed him and he feels he has nothing now losing the RV and all he doesn't even have Walt anymore because of him calling Jesse and loser and being mad at him for doing a good job on the cook, Jesse are had low self esteem the whole time he just wants to be needed and wanted and appreciated
@Gunleaver
@Gunleaver 6 ай бұрын
Jesse's plan doesn't have a lot of long-term promise. It's basically just committing suicide by Gus. When Jesse & Walt were solo, they first ran afoul of Emilio & Crazy 8, then they had a relationship with Tuco, because their product was so good he found them more useful as producers than just killing them as competition. Then, with Tuco gone and a momentary void in the market, they lost Combo to a rival gang, which is why they turned to Gus in the first place. If Gus has Walt, he does not need Jesse's product and Jesse becomes competition to be crushed, lest he cut into Gus' profits. His intention to flip on Walt for immunity is also a threat to Gus' operation and even Gus himself, because Walt could flip on him. Hell, Jesse might just know enough to be dangerous to Gus. By the logic of the drug world & organized crime, there is no reason to do anything other than kill Jesse. The real conflict Jesse's threat raises is that it is forcing Walt to weigh one aspect of his family against the other, Jesse versus Hank, and he does not want to lose either. He loves both, to the extent that he can love anyone not named Walter White, and does not want to choose between them. On some level Jesse has to know this. His threat is more like a desperate cry for Walt's affirmation, which is why he takes the deal Walt offers in exchange for a simple acknowledgement that his meth is just as good.

"the way he talks... the racism..." He makes racially-insensitive comments to his best friend who is a member of the race that he is joking about... that is not racism. That's the male version of how females make backhanded third-person comments to their friends about physical traits that their friends have. The thing with Hank is that he is written to be obnoxiously oblivious with the timing, location, and duration of his joking, so that it comes of as annoying instead of as endearing... but irl, it's how men bond. Men bond with fake insults; women bond with fake compliments.

@carinak619 6 ай бұрын
@@Chromium457 That's probably also a part of the reason. But the way I see it, at this point Gale admires Walt enough to stroke his ego to a point where he still feels way superior. The montage of them being bffs in the last episode shows that as well, Walt seems to be comfortable with Gale. Although it would be totally in character for Walt and probably would have caused major problems along the line. The way I see it the main reasons for getting rid of Gale are 1. protecting Hank and 2. protecting himselft by getting Jesse off the streets, where it would only be a matter of time before he would get caught and give Walter up to the DEA.

Walt 100% cut Gale loose to help Hank. The idea that he did it to control someone (jesse) is not true, nor is it for the fear of jesse getting caught. I dont think this is open for interpretation either. The show has done a good job of telling us this!

This is such an insane episode! Aaron Paul left earth.. lots of Hank character development.. and the final scene is obviously elite level tension and suspense..

Maple, wild. Hank pulverizes Jesse. Jesse threatening to snitch on Walt. Gus greenlights Hank. Two psychopaths try to kill Hank. And she still thinks Walt is the worst. Even after Walt makes excuses to accommodate Jesse. Wild.

Walt is a narcissistic sociopath that screws over everyone he came in contact with just because he has cancer and a midlife crisis and instead of taking a handout from former coworkers like a normal person, he becomes a drug kingpin because you know that's normal.

You have a good point about Walt wanting to feel superior in the lab and see himself as the best but (at least in my opinion) he does seem to genuinely like Gale and enjoys working with him. Also keep in mind its still HIS formula they are cooking and his method and Gale does somewhat follow his instructions. But he does seem to connect fairly well with Gale and they do bond over a shared "love" of the chemistry and the lab.

It was at this exact point that I thought Walt should've asked Gus to arrange a little fatal "accident" for Jesse. Everything would've been completely different then. But Walt was still too committed to that idiot with terrible judgement and a huge ego of his own.

The one thing that Jesse will never lose is the friendship and loyalty of Badger and Skinny Pete. That being said, Jesse is one of the more tragic characters in the show. He was perfectly happy as a small time cook, making a little cash and having fun with his friends. And look where he is now, and we're only halfway through the series.

He was literally going to get killed the next day by Emilio and Krazy 8 for what happened at the cook house. It's a tragedy of his own making. Drug dealers don't get happy endings is kinda what the whole show is about.

Hank may be annoying, especially in the early seasons, but he is the moral compass of the show.

Jesse accepts the offer to work with Walt because Walt gave him the one thing no one else did; respect. He told him his product was as good as his. This isn't just Walt saying Jesse's product is good this is Walt who above all else derives his self worth from being better than anyone else at what he does telling what the world - including his own parents - sees as nothing more than a junkie failure that he is as good as Walt is. And Jesse knows all of this and so Jesse knows how big this is. That alone is not enough but as Jesse said he has nothing so his options are to pursue his revenge against Hank but still be worthless and have nothing or he can go with the only person who has ever valued him where he will have a purpose. As messed up as their relationship is Walt always comes back to Jesse and this provides Jesse with the validation that he gets from nowhere else.

Of all the memorable things in this episode, I do still think of Walt getting a handle on himself for a second and telling him calmly his meth is as good as his, as a pretty stunning turning point in the show.
