i'm almost certain it was sung live! apparently andrew nearly got a lyric very very slightly wrong and joshua started singing with him (i think the line was "the ship is sort of sinking). the energy in the scene definitely makes it feel like it was sung live. edit: i was rewatching the movie the other night, and the recording of why in the film is definitely different to the studio version. different pauses and inflections, plus he breathes in different places.

The only thing that confused me is that Vanessa and the Joshua were there. So did he know them already and he asked them to be in Superbia or were they brought on by the guy who's giving him the workshop chance?

In real life, Joshua's character Roger, was Roger Bart, Jon's close friend who he cast in a lot of his shows, so I would presume Jon brought Roger and Karessa into the Supurbia reading. If you watch the videos of Jon doing ttB as a one man show, Roger Bart is in the background doing vocals. In the stage musical version of ttB with 3 actors, Karessa meets Jon for the first time doing the readingn though, so it's kinda confusing.

So this is something I haven't ever seen in a musical film before-- the voices are clearly digitally corrected, but effects have been added overtop to make the sound more natural. Not sure I'm a fan, but it's a lot better than something like the new Beauty and the Beast

I'll be honest, I love the way this was shot and performed but the lighting/color correction are awful. You lose half of the beautiful set, everyone's hair looks black, and joshua henry's character in particular practically disappears....which is hmmm.
