@@taofledermaus You know how it goes man. Powder chemistry can be fucky with temps, and if these are from Germany they also spent time at sea, it's possible the powder chemistry was altered by the long exposure to high humidity salt air in addition to the heat. There's definitely something going on here that most likely has to do with a combination of how the ammo was manufactured, and how it was stored
@Stigstigster2 жыл бұрын
@@TheOriginalFaxon I don't think so. The fact that just cooling one down proved to work shows this is most likely a temperature issue as Jeff discussed. Ammo does indeed degrade over long periods of time depending on storage conditions but ammo is also well sealed against the elements so it takes years to go bad, usually.
@TheOriginalFaxon2 жыл бұрын
@@Stigstigster Temperature issue goes to storage though, that's fully included in my point. Some plastics also CAN degrade in such conditions when sealed, it all depends on the rated temperature range for a given polymer mixture, and how malleable or firm it will be at a given temp. Storing in low temp conditions like inside a cooler, as they've done in the past, might have helped with this, had they been aware of the issue ahead of time. Forgive me for the confusion, I was being hyper-technical in my use of the term to encompass any condition in which the ammo lived prior to being fired, and temperature is a sub-category of that in my mind

Meanwhile, EU is a large place. In France, Italy or Spain, we have some very high temperatures too, and in France for example, we have lots of hunters. It's not like if these shells were designed only for hunting in Norway. I think this is either a big design flaw, either a defective batch. Maybe ?

As clearly noted, the sabot wadding is failing. I find it hard to believe though for it to be temp related judging by the first shot with a cold barrel. I personally think you got lucky with the one shell that actually shot true. I am almost wondering if either A) the wadding is poor quality, or B) the round itself has too much powder for the type of material/wadding that is being used. It would have been nice to see what the chrono would have shown for exit velocity of the round becaused those wad pieces looked like they were moving faster than the round itself on exit which would leave me to believe the sabot is failing either as the shot is being fired or due to over-velocity within the barrel.

The heat of summer is when I do my load testing with my reloads for pressure signs and accuracy. What will function great with no pressure problems in cold weather, may, (especially if ball powder) pop primers in summer heat. You would think a company like this one would've tested in heat as well as cold or cooler. I have tested my 308 rounds from freezer temp to leaving in the sun and their is a difference in velocity. Again, ball powder is a given in my experience to be temperature sensitive. I have loaded shotgun, but it's been a few years. Extruded powders are more forgiving in my experience with temp sensitivity. I'm sure you know this Tao, just trying to help those who have less or no experience with powders or reloading. It looked like the wad did better thru smooth bore, maybe a cork or paper wad would do better in rifling.Looks frustrating as hell, but I'm always glad to see you in my feed. The ammonwas spotty, but you guys are always competent and you try your best to make it fun. Love you guys.

they must be made for hunting season (in Germany) which I'm guessing is much cooler. Or they could all just be crap or they got too hot during shipping and that effected them.

Thanks guys! He'll probably send out some more and demand you put them all in ice water! 🤣

Even DDupleks was baffled at one of our hot weather tests. They were not aware of the problem and told me they finally got the same results we got but at 180 deg F. ! Go figure

Glad you tried a "smooth bore" smooth bore makes everything better. Lol. Good analysis. Thx...

The slug design, with moving parts that absorb energy, is a really bad idea. And it's probably generating the tumbling effect too.

Feels like the slugs are a bit old. The base of the sabot might work better with a cardboard plug. Plastic might need to be taped tighter around the slug. The plunger looked almost like it was spring loaded. Doesn't need the plunger to perform well. Snip it off and re-seat.

Brenneke black magic slug turning to dust and grains upon impacting a stack of paper plates in one youtube video - now this high buck piece of benneke crap.seen here.

Maybe ask Evan Perry to replicate the projectile, then build the shell with US components that may not be so heat sensitive? Just a thought.

Seems to me the wadding is no strong enough to withstand the pressure from the powder charge - designer needs to go back to the drawing board

Germany is much colder than Tx or Ca or wherever. Keep them in a co2 ice box, not on the co2, but they will work perfectly.

So the lesson of this video is this: If you're going to sent Jeff and O. G. ammo to test, send enough for testing in hot weather as well as cooler weather, plus some extra for lab analysis.

R870 is so fun and aftermarket mods. It's the Honda of shotguns like the Glock is of pistols

💯% O.G. pulled his shots just to mess up the German engineer standard...🤣🤣🤣

Those SUPER SABOT's look like novelty shots more than anything.

How long ago were these manufactured? Perhaps the plastic sabot has become brittle. OR the heat ramped up the velocity too high

Those rounds were junk ! Would it make a difference if you changed the powder to American powder ??
@nothingsurprisesmeanymore2 жыл бұрын
That's not good as now it's quite regularly 105f in Europe now, so if it was the heart they will be useless for large parts of the summer.

It's just heat sensitive flake powder, just use some Hercules, and viola great bear killer!

Temperature related air density differential makes a huge difference to the internal combustion engine so why not shot gun cartridges, its my best guess!

I'd love to see you reload these with an equivalent American Powder load.

Im thinking is the base of the wad that is creating the problem..need to have more support and or strength. When ya ice bathed it, that plastic hardened up.

I know I'm certain smoothbore shotguns when they get overheated they don't shoot the same. But that could be the shooter with too much recoil too. I think that it was just part of a bad lot and you should maybe send the video to brenecke and ask them if they know when they were doing that
@donaldslayton27692 жыл бұрын
Brenneke= shoulder smasher. When they shoot right, they are hard to beat. Thanks for the video Jeff and Greg

The only slug I trust, is a rifled slug. No sabot. But, I do love Brennek THD 20G for target shooting with slug guns.

I live in central Canada and still find that shooting shotgun shells in a very hot weather I get high pressures and erratic results. Best to shoot in a cooler weather. 👍👍😂
