Brent Cobb - Black Creek (Live Acoustic)
Filmed & recorded in the Capitol Theatre - Macon, GA
Written & performed by Brent Cobb
Directed by Jace Kartye
Audio by Miles Landrum
LYRICS:
Help me escape from this deserted sea
Lord I think that the devil might be after me
I don't want to waste my integrity
I'm just a man livin' a one night stand, I tell you what I need
Oh Black Creek, take me to that place
Wash my sins away
Oh Black Creek, take me to that place
Wash my sins away
Just a little taste, that's all I need
Fruitful harvest in a wicked garden off a forbidden tree
A simple scheme from judging fate
Simple as it may be, it's more than I can take
Oh Black Creek, take me to that place
Wash my sins away
Oh Black Creek, take me to that place
Wash my sins away
Guitar man, play me a tune
I got one foot tappin' and nothing to lose, I'm lost
I don't want to be found
The end for me could be comin' real soon
I'd like a glass of tea mixed with a sassafras root
And a breath of higher ground
Oh Black Creek, take me to that place
Wash my sins away
Oh Black Creek, take me to that place
Wash my sins away
Won't you wash my sins away

This is on my binge list, right next to Black River Killer from Blitzen Trapper, racking up the repeats forever. Before I ever heard this song, I put down the words to a pivotal scene in my WIP novel, at least a couple years ago now, while listening to Black River Killer. Now I'm in edits and on that binge again but with this addition. I had no idea there was a song that so, so perfectly fit my scene and tone such as this. Sumptuous and so, so good.

What it's Like Everlast. Slightly different but the as the whole composition is almost identical. You could literally replace the lyrics and it would work. Tell me you learned to play What it's Like almost perfectly.

Sir, considering your age, you were likely a teenager when What It’s Like by Everlast came out. It’s clear that you’ve drawn inspiration from its riff. Music often takes on a life of its own, interpreted and reimagined by individuals, which is why so many people connect with genres like rap without having lived the experiences it portrays. Music is historical-it carries meaning and evolves contextually with each person or society it touches. That said, I’m not judging you for incorporating the Everlast riff. I actually listen to your song at least once a week, but I also listen to Sublime, and I know Bradley Nowell stole heavily from reggae music as well. Most specifically, your comment about ‘keeping the babies fed, lights on, etc.’ comes across as lacking self-awareness. You cannot fully claim ownership of this song without acknowledging its previous influences. I’ve listened to your other music, and this song is clearly unique in several ways. It clearly reflects Everlast’s tone, sentiment, and melody. For anyone who loves music, this influence is unmistakable. Please give credit where it’s due and acknowledge the creators who inspired your work. Kind regards
