FYI, Slab City has an on-site library that is stocked and staffed by volunteer residents. There may be no codified laws, but the community has rules by which residents abide. These kids are being are being such disrespectful dorks.

It's Salton Sea. It smells godawful because of the salinity of the waters. I've seen dead birds in the water as well as fish. Nothing can survive in that water. It smells like salt, dead fish, and it's very disgusting smelling. The history behind Salton Sea is rather interesting as it was a resort in the 1950-1960s, the resorts around the area even hosted entertainers such as Frank Sinatra, The Beach Boys and Bing Crosby.

The area that they went to (the salton sea area) has a really interesting history involving developing land for vacation use and it ruining the local environment. It sucks to see this rich ass KZbinr just waltz into these people's town and just act like "oh my gooodddd! This is so scary!! Poverty is scary!" Then kick walls and shit. I've been been to Slab City before and I can cofirm that a lot of what Brent and his friends said is not exactly true. For starters, Slab City is almost 4 hours from LA so his friends had to have consented to this trip or realized pretty quickly that this wasn't a "tropical vacation". Boombay Beach is also thirty minutes from Slab City and has a very interesting history, as long as you don't take a swim! In my few hours of visiting Slab City, there were plenty of tourists and most locals were in trailers or homes because it was 100 degrees out. East Jesus, the art mueseum, is very cool and there's a lot to explore! There was also a sign that said, "vandals will be used for target practice" so Brent better watch out haha. Salvation mountain has a beautiful history too. Slab City, while not the safest place, is a wonderful place for art. You can really see the privilege in Brent's video. Thanks for reading :)

Awesome video Jake! I'm by no means an expert, but my brother has lived a pretty alternative/nomadic lifestyle and he's visited Slab City. My understanding is that it's totally off the grid ( I think on an old abandoned military base) and miles out from any town. It's basically the opposite of the influencer lifestyle and I think it was pretty dumb, disrespectful and dangerous the way they went in there.

I’ve been to slab city and basically is a place a lot of people go to live if their homeless or don’t want to or can’t pay for rent or somthing and they camp in RVs or tents. The reason the water is toxic was because they used it as a waste dumping ground and turned a famous tourist into a toxic environment.

I wouldn’t recommend going into the beach or touching anything because it’s possible to get cancer from it. Also the place isn’t deserted so much. A lot of tourist visit, b it mostly at the artwork areas

The way they all got up when he walked through the campsite made me literally gasp holy shit They’ve obviously never been around houseless/squatters before, just IMMEDIATELY get up and move back and say you were just about to leave? Tbh they were in these peoples space, and then they’re gonna be shocked when they walk up? Wasn’t that the point of the video? Jfc all I can think of is how many crunchy festivals I’ve been to where that is common place, people are either drunk or literally traveling festival to festival and kinda weird or loopy. We’re always like skeptically like “hey, what’s up man? How you doing?” Instead of jumping out of our seats… jfc it blows my mind when I see rich people just like do anything. They literally never come in contact with poor people and it’s disgusting to see it play out

That was so gross to watch. if they were familiar with these type of communities they would know that it’s expected to be communal. They have a fire and ice chests full of food. In many shanty towns itd be a no brainer to go up to the new people and expect them to share. not only because of the communal culture within tent city type establishments, but also as a sign of good faith since they were outsiders. They fact that they just left like that was beyond disrespectful to the person who was trying to establish trust and a relationship. The residents would have every right to be distrusting and try to force them out or just take their stuff. The KZbinrs in question think laws are only legislation. Laws are most commonly unspoken social norms. In those places they have plenty of laws. It just looks different. Security is formed through the formation of social bonds.

@@haileys5224 thank you for putting all that into words! Those are all fantastic points and I agree 10000%. It’s a shame that this is likely how a lot of regular people who watch them will be introduced to communal living/houselessness in an intimate setting

I’m so sick of Brent Rivera omfg 😭😭😭😭 the way he is like portraying or like explaining slab city (he didn’t even actually go to the city though???) is like…extremely not at all what life is like there. And I found that out by doing a 30 second google search like he and his friend REALLYYYY wanted to act like they were in a crime riddled city where people are constantly being murdered and shit like I’m TIRED

oh my god. i’ve been watching this for about 2 minutes and i had no idea that it was going to be about brent going to slab city. i went to slab city by myself as a 24 year old girl a couple of years ago to see all of the art installations. the people that live there are some of the kindest, sweetest, and most earth-loving people i’ve ever experienced. a few of them even helped me when my car got stuck in some sand and wouldn’t accept my money when i tried to pay them for helping me. brent’s video is so disrespectful to these people. they’re not monsters or lawless creeps. they mind their business and make art. this is so frustrating. halfway through, the man that came up to them and said “you shouldn’t be here” was NOT real. i talked to several residents when i was there and none of them act or look like that. if he was a resident they definitely convinced him to do that. no one there comes up to you and says “you shouldn’t be here”. they will enthusiastically talk to you about the art and warn you to be careful in the heat and sand. brent is also a fu//in fool. bombay beach is not just a lake that became toxic for no reason. the whole community used to be a man-made vacation spot that thrived a few decades ago. the people in charge and the vacationers were extremely reckless and careless, and they constantly dumped waste and booze into the sea. the sea became toxic because of human ignorance, which is why all of the marine life washed up on the shore and causes the entire area smell. the vacation spot then lost money and died out. the society that had grown there became forgotten and left behind to deal with the economic failure. the people who still live there stay because they love it and stay because they’re passionate about the history and what they create there. the locals also create all of that art and i’m annoyed that brent didn’t credit them or talk about the actual extremely interesting history of this area that should be respected and a body of people that should be praised.

Ohhhhhkayyyy. I’ve been to Bombay beach. It’s an “abandoned” town, as in nobody lives there but people are there. So many visitors and tourists and it’s right on the Salton Sea. The smell? It’s hardly there. If you’re a fan of graffiti and street art, it’s a really neat pit stop ;)

nothing about what they said about this town is even remotely true. “most dangerous city in america” is absolutely made up, and the wikipedia page for slab city takes all of 10 minutes to read, with the “crime” section only four sentences long. it’s also a pretty big tourist spot, like every single person i (from san diego) know has visited salvation mountain. the narrative he’s selling is so bizarre to me just because it is so so so easily and quickly fact checked lmao
