For starters, Slab City is almost 4 hours from LA so his friends had to have consented to this trip or realized pretty quickly that this wasn't a "tropical vacation". Boombay Beach is also thirty minutes from Slab City and has a very interesting history, as long as you don't take a swim! In my few hours of visiting Slab City, there were plenty of tourists and most locals were in trailers or homes because it was 100 degrees out. East Jesus, the art mueseum, is very cool and there's a lot to explore! There was also a sign that said, "vandals will be used for target practice" so Brent better watch out haha. That was so gross to watch. if they were familiar with these type of communities they would know that it’s expected to be communal. They have a fire and ice chests full of food. In many shanty towns itd be a no brainer to go up to the new people and expect them to share. not only because of the communal culture within tent city type establishments, but also as a sign of good faith since they were outsiders. They fact that they just left like that was beyond disrespectful to the person who was trying to establish trust and a relationship. The residents would have every right to be distrusting and try to force them out or just take their stuff. The KZbinrs in question think laws are only legislation. Laws are most commonly unspoken social norms. In those places they have plenty of laws. It just looks different. Security is formed through the formation of social bonds.

its really sad to see rich people walking through the area of the Salton Sea which is a sight of a man made disaster turning a rich lake into a polluted wasteland. Watching them react to the area all surprised just felt like they were joking about a place with such a sad history.

I’m so sick of Brent Rivera omfg 😭😭😭😭 the way he is like portraying or like explaining slab city (he didn’t even actually go to the city though???) is like…extremely not at all what life is like there. And I found that out by doing a 30 second google search like he and his friend REALLYYYY wanted to act like they were in a crime riddled city where people are constantly being murdered and shit like I’m TIRED

oh my god. i’ve been watching this for about 2 minutes and i had no idea that it was going to be about brent going to slab city. i went to slab city by myself as a 24 year old girl a couple of years ago to see all of the art installations. the people that live there are some of the kindest, sweetest, and most earth-loving people i’ve ever experienced. a few of them even helped me when my car got stuck in some sand and wouldn’t accept my money when i tried to pay them for helping me. brent’s video is so disrespectful to these people. they’re not monsters or lawless creeps. they mind their business and make art. this is so frustrating. halfway through, the man that came up to them and said “you shouldn’t be here” was NOT real. i talked to several residents when i was there and none of them act or look like that. if he was a resident they definitely convinced him to do that. no one there comes up to you and says “you shouldn’t be here”. they will enthusiastically talk to you about the art and warn you to be careful in the heat and sand. brent is also a fu//in fool. bombay beach is not just a lake that became toxic for no reason. the whole community used to be a man-made vacation spot that thrived a few decades ago. the people in charge and the vacationers were extremely reckless and careless, and they constantly dumped waste and booze into the sea. the sea became toxic because of human ignorance, which is why all of the marine life washed up on the shore and causes the entire area smell. the vacation spot then lost money and died out. the society that had grown there became forgotten and left behind to deal with the economic failure. the people who still live there stay because they love it and stay because they’re passionate about the history and what they create there. the locals also create all of that art and i’m annoyed that brent didn’t credit them or talk about the actual extremely interesting history of this area that should be respected and a body of people that should be praised.

Rich kids laughing and joking around at Slab City is so fucking classist and I hate it. Like they have the privilege to roll through and observe extreme poverty as a vacation. It’s very “look at the poors in their zoo! Haha! Hope we don’t get stabbed! Lol”

Ohhhhhkayyyy. I’ve been to Bombay beach. It’s an “abandoned” town, as in nobody lives there but people are there. So many visitors and tourists and it’s right on the Salton Sea. The smell? It’s hardly there. If you’re a fan of graffiti and street art, it’s a really neat pit stop ;)

nothing about what they said about this town is even remotely true. “most dangerous city in america” is absolutely made up, and the wikipedia page for slab city takes all of 10 minutes to read, with the “crime” section only four sentences long. it’s also a pretty big tourist spot, like every single person i (from san diego) know has visited salvation mountain. the narrative he’s selling is so bizarre to me just because it is so so so easily and quickly fact checked lmao

from what I can tell, slab city is an off-the-grid community, and most people who live there, are people who come from colder parts of the us and stay there in the winter
