The guy who wins has to pay some ungodly taxes on his winnings, so the un-caught scammers probably be factoring in that cost and splitting the remainder, and then investing most of their cut instead of spending it.

Or when the money started to run out for both of them. I could see an unusually scruffy ticket every once in a blue moon never getting any further scrutiny as long as the people turning them in had no apparent connection to each other...

In America the court says you voluntarily forfeited the property. If you owed ten bucks and it sold for a million at auction you wouldn't see a penny of it. A few courts have not taken this line but civil forfeiture accounts for billions lost, many times without even charges, like cash to buy a home taken from drivers for things like following too closely in traffic. Both are the same program to fleece.

Very interesting to learn that Camelot didn't only _consider_ a presented ticket without the barcode on it, but they even *paid out* a major prize on such a ticket. I can't remember the UKNL terms in detail, but I'm pretty sure there's a clause that allows exclusion of claim for mutilated tickets for just this sort of reason. ⚖ That said, the biggest scam around UKNL is the fact it's a gatekept and closed shop industry. Any hope of starting a large scale lottery in the UK immediately fails for the fact that such a thing is only permissible by „authorised“ parties, and the fact Camelot are the only entity who've ever been such an „authorised“ party strongly suggests that at least _some_ of the money from ticket sales is finding its way into ministers back-pockets... 💰🇬🇧🤔

When will lottery cheaters learn…no, not “stop cheating” or “stop breaking the law”…but “stop going after the jackpot!” If you have a way to manufacture tickets, make ones just under the claimable threshold. If you can rig the numbers, don’t get all six, get four, a lot of times. Couple hundred pounds/dollars a ticket, times infinity…

You also need the codes for the numbers, if you don't have the bar codes. This is inputted manually by the shopkeeper. So if the code is incorrect when typed in, it will be invalid. The guy working for Camelot, only had the codes for unclaimed winning numbers for a significant amount of money. There were just 2 digits missing for security, hence 100 tickets were needed for the scam. He wouldn't have the codes for 4 numbers, so the scam that you suggest wouldn't work.
