I went out with him for 3 years. He was such a fine actor screen and stage, his first love was the stage. He didn't like making movies but did them for the money. He wasn't married when we dated in LA and my husband had passed away young. We had great times, same birthday July 9th, he was a fine movie star but never really believed it or liked it. That's a great, relatable, story. I drank heavily after the military for many years, until later in life, I started giving art lessons to kids. My Dad, a Vietnam Veteran with PTSD and multiple other issues drank himself half to death for forty years. He tortured my mother, my sister, and me with his nightly, angry drunken homecomings. Nothing physical, just rage. Then, ten years ago, my 8yr old niece looked at him and said, "Pop Pop, why are you always drunk"? He hasn't had a drink since (proud of him). So Brian was right. One child that you love. Wish I'd asked him forty years ago.

Love BD. I was an alcoholic for many years due to my first wife passing away after having a liver transplant when she was just 24 years old. She dies at 28 years old. Drinking for 37 years nearly ruined and killed me. I became Type 2 Diabetic. One day it all stopped for me as I was watching a film on my computer wearing my headphones, I was drinking ice cold Guinness. I had about 4 cans. After a while I became very tired even though I was on medication for Type 2 but thought nothing of it. I went to bed for 2. 30 pm and woke up at 10 pm. A totally wasted day and night. So I thought, this is no good something must change. I opened my mobile fridge and literally took out all 13 cans of draught Guinness and threw them all down the drain. I decided as my waist was 48 inches I had to do something about my lifestyle... I decided to buy all the Diabetic books I could. But they all sounded similar or the authors were saying this is not right or we don't agree with that. In the end I decided to try something of my own. Going for walks every day. Eating chicken salad sandwiches and I started a weight loss notepad. From going 95.00 kg to 80. 90 kg I have lost well over the weight I was asked to. I was told I should lose 27 pounds in weight. I have actually lost about 30 pounds. I have had to change my clothing etc. But instead of sleeping during the day as I was, I now have more energy than I had before. This diet and excercise has worked for me but it may not work for every one. I am just past 70 years of age but actually look 50 years of age. PC. 19. 01. 2023. PS. I am saving money each day instead of drinking it !.

I was the worlds biggest drunk for many years of my life. It was so hard to quit, and so easy to start again (but it always brought me back to where I was when I quit: once a pickle, can never be a cucumber again). In my latest streak of sobriety, in the early 2000's I took my son to the Sasquatch weekend show at the Gorge. The music, the atmosphere was great. Everyone was drinking but me. The yearning for a drink overcame me and I got up to go buy a large beer. My young son, who had seen how alcohol impacted my / our lives, walked with me towards the beer stand. He reasoned with me "please don't do it, please push it off - please don't start again". The love in his eyes, the hope in his eyes, the fear in his eyes - brought me pause. Something changed inside me. I didn't buy that beer (that would have set me off on another decade of drunk events). We walked past that beer stand. 20 years later I still haven't had a drink.

But Ill never forget, the one that stands out to me the most, and its a film a lot of people unfortunately havent even seen or heard of, was a made for tv series called To Catch a Killer. It was a 2 part series I believe back in the 90's, based on the serial killer John Wayne Gacy, and Dennehy obviously played the Gacy part. I remember watching that as a young kid and to this day his portrayal of him still creeps me out. I remember that terrifying me more than movies like Jaws and Aliens, simply because of Dennehy's ability to take on that role so well. His version of Gacy sent chills up my spine. Brian truly one of the all-time greats who doesn't appreciate his performances, just his inclusion of a script is enough reason to rent/buy a movie always, not all actors get the great accolades they deserve Brian is accomplished and does deserve more acknowledgement.

That part about his son looking at him....brought back some bad memories. I wish my alcoholic father had as much sense as Brian Dennehy. GOD the shit he put us through and the toll it took. If you're a drunk, please get help. Admitting you have a problem is not a weakness, it's a strength.

Ya, wouldn’t it have been lovely if my father had had that moment with me, or the time my older brother got so mad at his being drunk that he tried to punch dad. Good for Brian for at least recognizing the problem. My father died of drink and smoke when I was 22. That was 45 years ago, yet his neglectful disinterest will haunt me the rest of my days.

Congratulations on quitting. I'm glad it worked for you and for Brian D. Sadly, many addicts can't give it up for anything. My mom could never lay off the cigs no matter what I or anyone else said or did. This even though she was a nurse and had several dying cancer patients beg her to quit over the years. She was still craving cigs on her deathbed at 54 years of age. But that wasn't the point of this great interview. As you say, very emotional and revealing. Great that Brian Dennehy did get the message and was able to make the change for the sake of his family. Glad you did too - best thing you could have done.

Growing up I had an aunt & uncle who I got along with great except the one thing I didn't like was that they were smokers. I was so happy the day they told me they had quit. They had also carefully kept track of how much money they had spent on their habit and had a special fund based on that which they would use to treat themselves.

I’ve always liked Brian and love his acting. Heard be passed recently. Sucks to hear. RIP. As far as drinking stopping after you have a kid, I dunno about that. I’ve seen many parents keep going even after having a child. He’s lucky in that he had some resolve and self-reflection. I’ve known alcoholics destroy relationships with their children because of it. And they only realize it when it’s too late.

You’re totally missing the point!! He saw fear in his sons face & read it for what it was. Brian Dennehy lived in Northeastern CT. When home, he would frequent a little movie theater, in a nearby town, that is no longer operational. When cleaning the theater after a movie he attended, empty booze bottles would often be found where he was sitting. The man definitely liked his drink.
@TheMundusvultdecipi3 жыл бұрын
Here he claims he was (more of) a sneaky drinker. Leaving empty bottles in a theater is not only not very sneaky but also pretty antisocial. But yes a serious alcoholic doesn't give a shit.
