That's a great, relatable, story. I drank heavily after the military for many years, until later in life, I started giving art lessons to kids. After looking at their bright eyed innocence and attentiveness, something told me to quit drinking and be more like them. I did, and at 63 I now have over 20 years of sobriety.... God bless you Brian Dennehy. R.I.P..

Coming up on 8 years of sobriety after years of failed treatments and half successful 12-step programs. Now I know it's not for everybody, but a very well-made cannabis extract became my savior. Eliminated all desire for drinking within 30 days!! #CannabisCures

My Dad, a Vietnam Veteran with PTSD and multiple other issues drank himself half to death for forty years. He tortured my mother, my sister, and me with his nightly, angry drunken homecomings. Nothing physical, just rage. Then, ten years ago, my 8yr old niece looked at him and said, "Pop Pop, why are you always drunk"? He hasn't had a drink since (proud of him). So Brian was right. One child that you love. Wish I'd asked him forty years ago.

I had entered a 33 day in house program at a rehab. My wife and two year old son Chris came to visit a few weeks later. We celebrated his 2nd birthday there. When they were getting to leave he started to cry. He wanted me to go home with them. But I couldn’t I had to stay and start to rebuild my life. I cried when they pulled away and I said to myself never again! Today 39 years later I’m still clean and sober and Chris is a fine young man who’s happily married and he works for me. So you see there can be a happy ending for your life but not if drugs and alcohol are involved!

Love BD. I was an alcoholic for many years due to my first wife passing away after having a liver transplant when she was just 24 years old. She dies at 28 years old. Drinking for 37 years nearly ruined and killed me. I became Type 2 Diabetic. One day it all stopped for me as I was watching a film on my computer wearing my headphones, I was drinking ice cold Guinness. I had about 4 cans. After a while I became very tired even though I was on medication for Type 2 but thought nothing of it. I went to bed for 2. 30 pm and woke up at 10 pm. A totally wasted day and night. So I thought, this is no good something must change. I opened my mobile fridge and literally took out all 13 cans of draught Guinness and threw them all down the drain. I decided as my waist was 48 inches I had to do something about my lifestyle... I decided to buy all the Diabetic books I could. But they all sounded similar or the authors were saying this is not right or we don't agree with that. In the end I decided to try something of my own. Going for walks every day. Eating chicken salad sandwiches and I started a weight loss notepad. From going 95.00 kg to 80. 90 kg I have lost well over the weight I was asked to. I was told I should lose 27 pounds in weight. I have actually lost about 30 pounds. I have had to change my clothing etc. But instead of sleeping during the day as I was, I now have more energy than I had before. This diet and excercise has worked for me but it may not work for every one. I am just past 70 years of age but actually look 50 years of age. PC. 19. 01. 2023. PS. I am saving money each day instead of drinking it !.

I went out with him for 3 years. He was such a fine actor screen and stage, his first love was the stage. He didn't like making movies but did them for the money. He wasn't married when we dated in LA and my husband had passed away young. We had great times, same birthday July 9th, he was a fine movie star but never really believed it or liked it. He should have gotten an Academy Award for playing the role of Presser in the film Teamster Boss.

Congratulations on quitting. I'm glad it worked for you and for Brian D. Sadly, many addicts can't give it up for anything. My mom could never lay off the cigs no matter what I or anyone else said or did. This even though she was a nurse and had several dying cancer patients beg her to quit over the years. She was still craving cigs on her deathbed at 54 years of age. But that wasn't the point of this great interview. As you say, very emotional and revealing. Great that Brian Dennehy did get the message and was able to make the change for the sake of his family. Glad you did too - best thing you could have done.

Brian Dennehy has done a lot of incredible stuff. A lot of major motion pictures. But Ill never forget, the one that stands out to me the most, and its a film a lot of people unfortunately havent even seen or heard of, was a made for tv series called To Catch a Killer. It was a 2 part series I believe back in the 90's, based on the serial killer John Wayne Gacy, and Dennehy obviously played the Gacy part. I remember watching that as a young kid and to this day his portrayal of him still creeps me out. I remember that terrifying me more than movies like Jaws and Aliens, simply because of Dennehy's ability to take on that role so well. His version of Gacy sent chills up my spine. He was a brilliant actor and may he RIP.

Brian Dennehy lived in Northeastern CT. When home, he would frequent a little movie theater, in a nearby town, that is no longer operational. When cleaning the theater after a movie he attended, empty booze bottles would often be found where he was sitting. The man definitely liked his drink.

@@robbiesmith2525 Brother, I am a blue collar type of person and I used to be that guy who would "drink to relax after a hard days of work" but before I knew it I was drinking to relax myself before I clocked in to being my hard day of work and I literally couldnt function and had the shakes before work... so I had to drink before work in order to function. What works for me might not work for you but my whole outlook is why knock it if I havent tried it. But I meditate. And when I first got sober and was introduced to meditation I was the type of guy who didnt want to hear that shit or id be in the mindset of yea right meditation are you kidding me? But after I got sober I noticed that my mind was still racing a million miles an hour and I still had the same busy mind as a did when I was actively using and drinking. So my sister turned me onto Deepak Chopra. He is a spiritual guru and big into mediation and I am honestly glad I came across his material and taught myself how to meditate. Ill be honest it didnt work at first but I kept at it and literally had to train my mind in order to shut it off in order to meditate. So when I get home from work now I disconnect and turn everything off, tv, computer, social media ect... and I dedicate an hour to meditating and I meditate before bed too to put me in a relaxed mindset. Theres also more to it than that. I personally dont use pot but I do believe they are a safer alternative than drinking in order to deal with stress and try to get a good night sleep. You can also consume them via edibles instead of smoking. I also went to rehab 12 times before I finally got my life together. So I am not sure how far you are into your drinking or if you consider it a problem but when it comes to getting rest the thing that did it for me was a combination of things but meditation and Deepak Chopras books helped me out from the aspect of trying to get rest. I hope you read this and didnt mean to make it so long but I just have deep feelings for trying to help people when they ask.
