I'm happy for Brian that he lived to see his grade in music changed from an 'F' to an 'A', courtesy of the new principal at Hawthorne High.( He wrote 'Surfin' instead of a sonata in his senior year in 1960, and failed the class-- what a shitty teacher he must've had!) And he's still going strong at 80!! You rock, Brian!! 🎸🎸🎸🎸🎼🎶🎵🎶🎼😸😺😸🇬🇧🐨🇺🇸

That is mind blowing that any teacher…. anyone at all could give Brian Wilson an F in music. Clearly the teacher was deaf. Or based the grade on something other than his music abilities. 🤯🎶🎶

Nope, Fred Morgan gave him an F because he didn't turn in what the course required. Morgan said it was good - legend has it it was either an early version of "Surfin'" or "Surfer Girl" - but it wasn't the required sonata, so - automatic fail. Morgan was interviewed for the 1976 TV special, and was a much loved and respected teacher at HH.

​@@paulforder591 Bit harsh 😄 His job was to educate pupils regarding song form and composition, not popular culture. He did right to fail Brian as his submitted work wasn't a sonata as required, and Morgan's job was to ensure his pupils could comprehend what a sonata is

@@MidosujiSen Mr. Morgan was a music teacher, but he often substituted anywhere that he was needed, so I knew him as a substitute. He was one of the original HHS teachers, like Coach Chauncey was, and they filled in, where needed. The Coach was my driver-training instructor, for a while. Mr. Morgan is still alive, I think, but I attended Coach's memorial after he passed recently at 99.
