Bricklaying With Steve and Alex

Күн бұрын

THIS WEEK WE GET THE SLAB PREPPED AND CONCRETED. FIRST THE INSIDE IS DUG OUT TO ALLOW FOR HARDCORE THEN WE PUT IN 2.5 TON OF SCALPINGS (20MM TO DUST) WHICH IS COMPACTED WITH A WACKER PLATE.
NEXT WE BLIND THE STONE WITH SAND .(TO STOP THE STONES PUNCTURING OUR 1ST DPM). THEN WE COMPACT AGAIN.
NEXT IS DPM NO 1 THEN WE LAY OUR 125 MM POLYSTYRENE INSULATION ON TOP. A 100MM X 25 MM STRIP OF INSULATION IS PUT IN AROUND THE PERIMETER TO STOP COLD BRIDGING.
NEXT IS THE 2ND AND MAIN DPM . THIS ONE IS CUT AND TAPED NEATLY AT THE DOOR OPENING.
NEXT THE CONCRETE GOES IN AND IS TAMPED THEN TROWEL FINISHED WITH A 4 FT LEVEL (FORGOT OUR FLOAT)
WE ALSO INTALL THE GULLEY AND PIPEWORK INTO THE INSPECTION CHAMBER.........ENJOY

You are a brick layer, but I just love how you can also do the other jobs that come along the way such as laying that pipe. I'm from Canada, and syndicates are a real pain as far as that go. You can only do what is specifically listed in your job definition and for anything else, you have to get other trades involved. It makes building anything so much more expensive and time consuming then it needs to be. Besides, let's be honest. You are a brick layer, but I don't think that you are interested in starting to get involved in pluming jobs beyond what is required to get your job done. We seriously needs basic rationalisation like that around where I live. There's certainly something to be said about making sure that the job gets done by someone who is competent in the matter, but this arrangement has not stopped bad actors. If anything, it has exacerbated the labor shortage by making things less efficient.

Hi Steve/Alex, great work. Quick Question, should the inside visqueen not go up and over the inner leaf? Did you not do this because two layers of visqueen and a DPC on top would cause issue with the next layer of blocks i.e. bed-size or blocks sliding off? also what is the min height the inside layer of visgeen should come up the wall?

Hi Guys looking good as always but why do you not continue your cavity under the doorway, would this not cause insulation issues and possibly dampness. Do you just do this if the oversite concrete is the finished floor or if you are laying a screed as well?
@SteveAndAlexBuild

The concrete always goes into to door openings . If it didn’t and the wall carried across would be level with the floor and cause rising damp issues . 🧱👍🏽

Hi, I've watched this video with interest as we are having issues with the floor in our new extension. Our builder appears to have cut off the top dpm at floor level after pouring the concrete floor on. This now seems to have left us with an area in the far corner where we keep getting moisture appearing. We have been told by a surveyor that he should have put in a dpm upstand around the perimetre and set it in to the brick work, I can see you have done this. Can this now be put right retrospectively? Sorry for the long message. 👍
@SteveAndAlexBuild
@SteveAndAlexBuild 4 жыл бұрын
Andy Domanski I’ll be honest and say it can be done but will be a lot of work . You would need to grind out to retro fit the Dpm .akso you would need to cut the concrete back to find that Dom and lap your new piece onto that then patch your floor ...... not ideal . An easier alternative would be get some self adhesive bitumen Dpm and stick it to the floor about 100 mm out then up the wall 100 past doc . I’m no expert on this so ask around . It’s puzzling because building control should have inspected the Dpm before the concrete was poured 🙄. Good luck , hope you get it sorted 🧱👍🏽

Great bit of graft and nice to see some concrete go in .Many moons ago I did a lot of industrial units for the likes of Harcros ( now Jewson ) and the weapon of choice for concreting between the roadforms was the twin alloy beams with the bastard heavy petrol engine in the centre between the beams , and if the guy on the rake was crap you ended up pulling vast amounts of concrete by pulling the unit trough it . Then prior to the introduction of the petrol driven power floats it was all night on a younger man hand troweling . Perps seem a touch on the wide side Steve ( unless it’s the camera angle) is it because the extension isn’t brick size?
@SteveAndAlexBuild
@SteveAndAlexBuild 4 жыл бұрын
Ronnie Biggs . I’ve used one of those things in the past , very hard work . As for the perps they were big on every side which was a bummer but to tighten them up would have put a piece in each side and I hate 3/4 s in my walls so it was the lesser of 2 evils 😬🧱👍🏽

@@SteveAndAlexBuild just wondering as I'd have picked up a couple of things. I'd have queried that age of property being a combined system. I couldn't see any rwp's at the back so sometimes foul is at the rear and sw at front. There should be an inspection chamber at change of direction but I agree that it's roddable from both sides so I'd have accepted. I wouldn't have accepted it cascading in to manhole especially seeing as theres a kitchen waste going in to it. Grease can splash on to opposite benching. I'd have asked for it at invert. Bottom layer of visqueen is your DPM so that layer should lap in to DPC. Top layer is protection layer to prevent the alkaline in the concrete from corroding the foil on PIR and I wouldn't have asked for it for polystyrene. However sometimes if it's loose fitted and a wet mix it can float the insulation so a top layer can prevent that. (I'm a building inspector by the way and just observations I'd make but I understand I'm not privvy to any questions your approved inspector may have asked if he turned up) 👍

@@degsyathome Are you saying that the bottom layer of DPM should be brought up the existing back wall and fitted into a chase to lap onto house DPC, also what do you mean about you requiring an invert?
@degsyathome
@degsyathome 3 жыл бұрын
@@amazing451 yes. The bottom layer is the damp proof membrane and should be continuous with the DPC. The top layer is just a protection layer for three insulation. Look at any PIR manufacturers specs. Any underground drainage should enter the inspection chamber or manhole at the invert level of the main run. i.e. It shouldn't enter at a higher level and cascade in.
