Coarse sand is good for covering services usually covered in marked paving bricks. Concrete is usually comparatively expensive unless you need to buy a minimum volume. Also sand helps with drainage. Were I to do this I would cover the pipe in well compacted river sand then marked paving then crushed sandstone also well compacted in layers then compacted roadbase then the concrete slab. I'd hate to do a cbr on that ground it looks like mushy fill. Maybe I'm a little paranoid about things as I used to do testing on the compacted fill for the roads on new roads and building sites.

Contrary to some of the naysayers here, I fully sympathise with what you had to do to get a stable foundation, especially since I've seen foundations roll over like a log, a house split in half due to poor foundations, and have had to do more underpinning on old structures than I care to count. You did what you needed to do to get a stable foundation, though I would have gone the extra mile, and chem-bonded steel rods into the main foundation and used them to create a ringbeam into the porch footing, to anchor the two footings to eachother, but thats just me and my preferences to "add buttons and zipties" to the belt and braces.

I do not know how much they cost, but they make small versions of helical pier drivers. They take different sized rods with metal blades on the designed to be screwed into the ground that extension rods can be attached to. Then you screw them into the ground until the hydraulic gauge indicates that you have reached soil or rock that is firm enough to support the structure you are building. Then you weld a metal plate on the top then place the reinforcement bars you need across the top of the piers and then poor the concrete into the footer trench. Those piers will make up for poor soil conditions close to the surface and prevent the footers from shifting and messing up the structure built on the footers.

@SteveAndAlexBuild. Thank you for this video on the continuing saga of the “leaning” porch. I hope this is not too much of a stupid question. Do you still need to use those agitator/vibrator wands when pouring big(ger) volumes of concrete - say for foundations? I can only think that these devices were used to drive out air pockets? Maybe certain concrete mixes and more modern ingredients in the mix means you don’t need to in the 21st century - but I am just guessing. Keep up the good work fellas. Stay safe and well.

So even if that soul was "unstable", they make a fancy device called a plate compactor. You dig a few inches below where you need to pour the slab to. Then you run the plate compactor over it. Then you as crush rock up to the bottom elevation of the slab. Then you compact again. Then you frame up and pour your slab. It will never move. Ok I'm so lost. You had a front step that kept sinking. So you dog like 4 get down, but only around the step. Then, without removing the old step out the dirt under it, you put 3 feet deep worth on concrete around it? Why? If the soil is so bad, why not remove it under the step itself? Why not go the cheaper route and dig out the whole square and do lifts of crush rock followed by compacting followed by the soil fabric they use to stabilize soil built up for freeway on ramps? Then you just repeat until you get to the needed elevation. That's overkill but it isn't nearly as expensive. The right way i left an earlier comment on, but essentially just dog slightly lower then needed and compact the existing soil with a plate compactor. Then bring to level with crush rock and compact again. Then make your step. But there was no benefit to digging that deep especially when you left the step and the dirt under it. Also, maybe use some of the money you scammed off the customer to buy some equipment. We really don't need to do this stuff by hand in 2025... our even way back in 2024 when this was actually done...

@SteveAndAlexBuild as I suspected. You are scamming people. When someone has an arguement to justify what they did, they are willing to explain it. Jumping to insults and offering no conversation usually means you know you are doing it wrong and are trying to hide it with insults and emotions. Hopefully my statements here will help people think about any contractor they might be hiring. If it doesn't seem right, get more opinions. Nothing about this video is right. Even the wall being torn down and basically rebuilt as it was with the old blocks even, made no sense. It was really hard to be certain that it wasn't built different slightly so I chose not to comment. However, it doesn't seem right either. It also wasn't properly bedded. You gotta at least put a gravel base down.
@activemanishere13 күн бұрын
Omfg i just rechecked and in right, not a single piece of rebar in that pour. You can't be serious. You also poured 3 feet of concrete without using a vibe. You gotta vibe deep pours. And you gotta use rebar. That's not even a rookie move, that's incompetence. Even rookie know there has to be rebar, even if they don't do it right. I'm not sure how no one is calling you on your work but you should not still be in business. I'm now bordering on insults because it is beyond shocking that you hold a business license. Here in America there would be entire cities you would be barred from doing work in. You would be reported to the better business bureau and would never get a customer again. This porch will fail again and that's despite the fact that it's massively overbuilt. Concrete is brittle without rebar so any shift and that's going to Crack and start sloughing. I'll bet it's already cracked by the time you finished the brick work. One freeze after a wet fall and the pockets of air you trapped will explode and you will be back doing warranty work. I'm working really hard to stay respectful but know that i don't want to. I hope every perspective customer from here on out sees my comments and knows that they take a risk giving you any business that includes concrete or any foundation work. My mind is blown right now. It's 2025 and there are still contractors pouring concrete without rebar? Why? A vibe is less then $100 or whatever that means in pounds why would a contractor that does concrete work not own a few let alone 1? Please tell me how your business is still allowed to do work in your country?

You can't seriously think there is a first world nation anywhere on the planet that would have code saying it's OK to pour a concrete structure without rebar? If you are telling me it's standard practice to pour anything concrete that's bigger then the base of a fence post without rebar in the uk then I would tell you there is truly no hope for your country. I suspect that the problem is you though.

@SteveAndAlexBuild Good news then Steve 🤣👍.Anything can happen in the ground .we price up and make it clear then if we need to go deeper etc we can charge extra for it .It's all explained before work begins soft ground or building control changes etc . Glad you got it all right mate 👍 🙌💯
