Bit of a tip when laying concrete as you know yourself concrete is the same as plastering or jointing brickwork for that matter it is all about timing the finish so I tamper it, screed excess of as you were doing and don't touch it with a float till water starts evaporating of the top as the action of tampering causes water to rise to the top (capillary action) so usually I clean up first to allow water to start evaporating and then either bull float it or screw your trowel to a lath at a angle to act as a long handle and then float it in long strokes, perfect job every time and easier than doing little sweeps with your arm and trowel, but as per usual good tidy work 👍

Great video again lads. We used to build up to DPC on face work then leave the blockwork down the thickness of the slab, or there abouts, then take some polystyrene the thickness of the cavity and place against the back of brickwork. Pour your slab using top of brickwork to screed off with dpm over the brickwork. Next day fold your dpm back on to the slab and remove the polystyrene which has formed your cavity. Place dpc on top of dpm from concrete slab and lay your blocks on it. Later trim off excess dpm on inside of blockwork. Slab is stronger because it is sat on your blockwork which in turn goes down to footings. You won't get any lateral damp on the edge of the slab either because it's completely wrapped with dpm. Cheers 👍

I'm starting to think about how to do the floor for a garage/workshop I'm building soon - I want to insulate it but it also needs to take a bit more weight than a domestic floor (cars, machine tools etc). Would a 6" slab with a bit of reinforcing mesh over dpm and 4" of insulation be about right? I've still got to work out what I'm doing with the pit too so I can work under the car!

@@SteveAndAlexBuild So normally (what I've seen) the sub structure is blockwork to ground level and a couple of courses of brickwork and the pad is built up flush to that level, however back in the 1800s it appears there wasnt much thought about damp and so my floors are level with the ground outside. Do I just need to wrap/extend the dpm up the sides of the blockwork to prevent damp penetration with damp course on top to prevent any wicking through the brickwork?

Really enjoyed this video. Can I ask what's the difference between DPM (Damp Proof Membrane) and DPC (Damp Proof Course) and where do they go? Where are they placed? And what's the difference in materials?
@SteveAndAlexBuild
@SteveAndAlexBuild 3 жыл бұрын
Dpc is used mainly in brickwork and is placed in at 150 mm above ground level . It Is made from wpquite thick plastic . DPM is also made form plastic but comes in 4 m wide rolls . It is used under insulation then under concrete floors to stop rising damp . Hope that makes sense 👍🏼🧱

Thank you for sharing such an informative video. Just about to have a conservatory built, & the builder has stated for the base - hardcore, sand, then polythene. So far so good. But then he states 100mm concrete on top with 100mm celotex, & finally 0.75 floor screed to finish. Sounds like an extra layer of concrete or screed to me? And no mention of polythene between concrete & celotex. I'd appreciate your thoughts, as I have no experience whatsoever. Many thanks.

Penistone Lodge We open the door and put a spirit level on the door threshold and measure down to the house slab , then measure down on the outside wall and mark the slab height .
