Her mom was wrong but I don’t think she deserves the hate she’s getting. She didn’t want her daughters only focus to be on her weight since it can be easy to become obsessed with weight again when recovering from an ED. Her daughter was proud of having overcome such a time and wanted to show it, her mom just didn’t know how to handle it and was too worried to see it was that and not her slipping back into those times.

I'm sure mom is worried the dress that makes her look smaller will trigger her daughter's ED. We don't have a clue what all mom went through while worried to death about her daughter. She's just scared and doesn't want anything to happen that could send her child back in a tail spin. If you're not a mother with a child who has this, then you don't have a clue!

I agree. I once starved myself for a smaller size of a bridesmaid dress. I was so proud of my skinny self, but now when I see pictures, even though I was 30 years younger, I look pale and exhausted. Being fit and healthy is more important to me now than just a number on a tag.

I understand--due to similar issues of a family member--the mom doesn't want the daughter to continue to place a placebo on her recovery. So many comments have stated the daughter has moved on and not the mom. We don't know that. Mom is there; we are not. There are plenty of people with eating disorders who have "the highs" where they temporarily feel good about themselves. Mom wants her to be okay ALL the time and make healthy decisions for herself. She may not be communicating it well, but it is VERY clear that is her wish for her daughter.

It sounds like mom has been so used to trying to convince her daughter is beautiful her whole life and just wants her daughter to be happy and now worrying about her body. This is what I understood her mom to say: The daughter has been laser focused on losing weight. That kind of focus was necessary for successfully losing 75 pounds. When you choose your wedding dress, however, there is a different purpose at hand. Don't use the "weight loss focus" to choose a dress for the "biggest day of your life." The mom is assuming the bride is being self conscious to begin with thinking she’ll only choose a dress based on how skinny she’ll look (even though the whole point of clothing is to show off your body) rather than the bride wanting to show off her new body which in turn will make the bride self conscious. If the mom can’t see past the ED the bride won’t be able to either her hearts in the right place but needs a better execution

i've said it before, people need to learn the compliment sandwich. it's fine to say so when a bride doesn't look good in a dress, lord knows there's no shortage of tacky ill-fitting wedding dresses, but you have to do it in a way that doesn't make the bride feel personally attacked. say something you like about it, then express your concerns, then pull it back with the silver lining. that way the bride hears where it falls short but has plenty to lean on if the positives outweigh the negatives for her.

Exactly. My best got engaged recently and I'm the maid of honour and will be with her dress shopping. We already talked a lot about what she wants and it's not something I would ever wear (she wants tattoo lace and most likely sleeves). But I can imagine her looking great in it, because it fits her romantic, creative personality. I will tell her nicely but honestly if I think a dress she tries on doesn't suit her, but I would never discourage her from a dress because it's not what I would have picked.

There is a terror having a child with an eating disorder, it can leave a panic that is hard to ignore and it easily slips into being overly controlling. It carries a guilt and that is also a source of needing to have everything under control around your child, no matter how old your child is. It really can be completely enveloping.

My mother seemed to have experienced that. She cared and meant well but she found it hard to understand how micromanaging everything was counterproductive to my recovery. I remember she would make comments on my portion size, concerned I would gain weight by having too much fruit sorbet and that I would slip back in to disordered habits as a result of weight gain. It took her a while to comprehend how her comments were more detrimental to my mental health than any amount of weight gain itself. She was perpetuating my problems in a desperate and misguided attempt to prevent them. I hope parents with kids with eating disorders take care in how they approach these topics.

It's important to remember that the bride didn't just have body hang ups. She has an eating disorder. Yes she has done really well to fight it and is healthier now but stressful life events, such as a wedding, can trigger old unhealthy habits or develop new ones. I.e. she may have over ate before and then she starts starving herself to look the best she can in her dress. My auntie was anorexic and she lost her fight to it and I have seen the devastation that her passing has caused but it wasn't just a sudden thing. It was a constant battle over years and years. We do not know what this family has been through, we do not know if advice has been sought/given on how to handle the situation. I don't think the mom had bad intentions, I think she genuinely cares about her daughter. She also has two other daughters that she will want to protect. Eating disorders ruin lives, unless you have been in this situation yourself you cannot say how you would act

I had one daughter and she said, from a very young age, that I was going to make her wedding dress. When that time came, I did, along with her bridesmaids' dresses. That was one of the happiest times and neither she nor I would have been ugly to each other. I do not understand any mother who would ridicule her daughter over a wedding dress. That poor girl. I hope she got the dress of her dreams.

The mother wanted to make sure her daughter's pick was out of the right motive. The moment she realized her daughter loved the dress not a smaller looking body in a dress she was more than happy. She kept repeating how beautiful her daughter was before and after she lost weight. And the bride was so happy to see her mom happy that it made me happy for both of them and for the rest of the family. They cared more for each other than for the dress. Parents are called to parent their children - to help them make right choices in life not just merely make them feel good.

She looks beautiful. Sometimes, a mom has a harder time letting go of the past than the daughter. Years ago, I had surgery to remove a brain tumor and I have a scar on the top of my head where the hair hasn’t grown in. It’s just a strip and doesn’t bother me at all, but she doesn’t like it when I do my hair in a way that the scar shows. I see it as a battle scar to be proud of, but I think it reminds her of when we were all scared and shocked at my diagnosis.

The daughter was unhealthy when she weighed that much. She's at a healthy weight now.. why does that make her mom upset? I don't understand.. Edit to add, her being at a healthier weight and the fact that she said her eating disorder is better is what I'm meaning. Not simply that she got to her lower weight. Sorry for the miscommunication because now people seem to think I'm supporting unhealthy ways to lose weight when that's not the case at all. I'll be more specific next time I comment. I just think these are things her family should be proud of and if she's wanting to show off her figure because that's the physical evidence of her healing, I don't see a problem with that. That's what I mean.

you're right, you don't understand. you don't understand that "iT's UnHeAlThY!" is not the be-all end-all of weight management OR self-esteem. she was unhealthy when she had AN EATING DISORDER. that is what the mom is worried about coming back when she obsesses over being smaller now. you'd have people sticking their fingers down their throats all the time because "AT LEAST YOU'RE NOT FAT THIS WAY."
@celli3000

@@dietotaku Well you just made alot of assumptions there. I actually am also very passionate about mental health as well and I never said that her eating disorder wasn't important. But the fact that she's now at a healthier weight and says she has overcome her eating disorder are good things. Things that she's proud of and now that she's at a healthy weight, she wants to show it off. I never said that binging is better than being overweight. That's disgusting for you to have assumed.

@@celli3000 I think that the problem is you focusing on her weight when what we're trying for here was her mental state. It's not good because she's at a "healthier weight", its good because she's stopped focusing on trying to lose the weight in an unhealthy way and recognized that she needed help with her mental state.
@celli3000
@celli3000 3 жыл бұрын
@@mikayladouglas2503 next time I'll be more specific in my comment then. Because I do think both are important. I only mentioned her weight because her eating disorder was the kind to cause you to gain weight, so her being able to lose that and as she said herself, recover and get to a healthy weight means the weight she's at is healthier in more ways than one. Her losing that weight shows her recovery. Not only that but shes been verbalizing that she recovered and likes to show off how small she is now because she worked hard to get where she is. I didn't think I had to get that specific in my wording. My bad.

I also struggled with an eating disorder for awhile. My cousin ended up in the hospital because of it. Sadly in my cousins case it was her mother's fault. She was in gymnastics so she had muscle and muscle weights more then fat so pound wise is all my aunt saw she toldher to lose weight. Thankfully my cousin is happy and healthy now.
