I love that Hakoda doesn't justify why he left. Katara already knows all that. To argue would just feel like he was dismissing her feelings. Instead he apologises and admits how much he hurt from his decision too. A massive difference to how Ozai treats Zuko. Ozai doesn't even pretend to care about Zuko's feelings, praising him only for his actions.
@bluehope423 ай бұрын
Ozai's pride is conditional. The complete opposite of Hakoda.
@AustinSamson19993 ай бұрын
I’d say this is also mirrored with how Ozai treats Azula too. If she’s not PERFECT in everything she does and doesn’t perform to daddy’s satisfaction she instantly gets the cold shoulder and is treated dismissively too. She’s literally FORCED to be a child soldier with no sense of self just to appease him. Ozais kids are only worth something as long as HE directly benefits from their existence and actions where as Hokada is just happy to see BOTH his kids thriving. Katara is struggling emotionally yes 100% but considering who she’s was when he LAST saw her comapred to the water bending master he encounters this episode it’s clear she’s grown and changed and while he sorry for the pain he caused her he can acknowledge the beautiful INDIVIDUAL she’s become. There IS no individuality with Ozai. Their either an extension of his will, or they’re an obstacle. The parallels in this show are PEAK😤👏

Agreed. I remember crying when I first saw the scene with Hakoda and Katara. My dad is military and as a kid I harbored a lot of anger (that I didn't understand) bc he had to leave so often. That scene put a lot of my feelings into perspective and I've always been greatful for it

About breaking up the episodes into videos: I suggest you start with 2 episodes per video as you have been, then do episodes 9, 10, 11 in one video (10 and 11 are a two-parter, probably combined on Netflix anyways, and you need to switch the cadence because the book has 1 more episode than book 1 and 2). Then continue with 2 episodes per video, there is another two-parter coming (episodes 14, 15), but that matches the cadence then. And then do one big episode for the finale, the last four episodes; please do NOT split up the finale. It's basically meant to be enjoyed as a feature length movie and also paced that way.

You guys have to understand, at the end of the day, Zuko is just a kid. A kid who has been through more trauma and pain than any person should ever have to suffer in their life. He so desperately wanted the love of his father back, it's what has driven him all these years. His character is a metaphor for addiction. Even when someone works to better themselves and overcome their problems, sometimes when the opportunity presents itself, addicts will relapse. It wasn't realistic for Zuko to move past all his struggles in the way the season 2 finale portrayed. He may yet get a redemption arc and overcome his internal conflict of self, but none of this has ever been his fault. Not really.
@fluffycrumpetbaby3 ай бұрын
Its totally fair for you guys to hate the Mai and Zuko dynamic, especially because of the sour taste still left in the mouth from the betrayal... BUT... I hope you find the humour in it going forwards as well as see that theres actual care there. I always thought the broody emo couple dynamic was hilarious from the get go, very of-the-time and also somehow timeless. The deadpan blunt comments from Mai but the subtle way they still convey how much she does care. I think the show did a really good job in these episodes!! Good example would be when Azula interupts them, you glossed over it, but Mai gives Azula a 'side eye' she gives AZULA a side eye... That's brave, and shows that Mai is pissed off so much about being interrupted spending time with Zuko that she would actually show annoyance at Azula, someone everyone fears. Good character writing and subtle story telling. 😊

I think it’s worth noting that in the long wait between seasons 2 and 3 they released 3 comics, which detailed some of the plot points that get quickly skimmed over in the first episode. Namely the Earth King deciding to go roam the world with Bosco, Zuko and Mai getting together, and how Team Avatar ended up capturing a Fire Nation ship. There was also an online video game with cut scenes (included on the DVDs as an extra) which detail Aang in his coma in the Spirit World, trying to reconnected with his most recent past lives, going back to the last time an airbender was the Avatar, in order to heal his Avatar spirit. It contains some nice backstory for some of the previous Avatars as well as a bit of resolution on leaving earthly attachments in order to control the Avatar state.

Having watched this series so many times sometimes I forget what it was like the first time. I’ve come to know the story beats, character arcs, creator notes and fan dissections so deeply that when people feel the same things I felt on my first viewing I get frustrated with them for the way they talk about characters I feel differently about having seen them in the light of all I now know. Now that you’ve helped me remember what it felt like to endure Zuko’s backslide (no matter how realistic it is for an abused 16 year to fall in the way and for the reasons he did) for instance, I’ve realized I kinda just need to let it go and be cool with people feeling how they feel about this show and its characters with wherever they are at in the story. Thanks for the reminder to not be a dick!
