Have to agree that the casting on Bridgerton has been PERFECTION. Nicola Coughlin said she expected a prolonged, multi-audition process (Shondaland! Netflix!) and was astonished to be offered the role of Penelope after ONE audition; Claudia Jessie has said her audition experience for the show was the best she’d ever had (‘course, she is/was dating casting director Cole Edwards). The casting folks know what they are doing!

I actually just read Gregory's books and I swear he's the only man who doesn't have anger issues lol. He has his moments where he is mad but its 100% reasonable and he doesn't over do it. I liked his book way more than I thought. But anyway yea I am looking forward to s4. I recently re read the book. The issue is not the offer (like it is kind of expected like Sienna with Anthony... it was a normal thing at that time IF the the woman accepts). The ISSUE is that he doesn't accept the no. He is coercitive and even threatened her to blackmail her to force to be his mistress. This is why (personality) his red flag is worse of the anger issues in Colin's book 😆 but anyone has different opinion. I will wait for when the Sir Phillip red flags will be pointed out because I am ready to do with him what you did with Ben like "He never did/said that".

Interesting that the relationship between Anthony and Siena in Season One hit similar notes: She refused Anthony’s impulsive suggestion that they make their relationship public, having no illusions that a sexually-adventurous, unmarried actress (horrors!) would find acceptance in Ton society-and valuing her own hard-earned independence. Sounds like Sophie is also grounded in reality and clear-eyed about what she wants versus what society will allow her to have. And it’s appropriate, I think, that these two strong female characters both come from the “lower classes.” As much as I love the Bridgerton family, they are absolutely clueless about how how the majority of the populace live, and that cluelessness causes inadvertent but real harm (Siena in Season One, Theo Sharpe in Season Two, even the Featherington’s fragile financial state throughout the series all highlight how incredibly privileged the Bridgertons are). I’m not a fan of Julia Quinn’s prose, so I greatly appreciate your work in connecting the books to the series; thank you!

I don't think people judge the book so harshly because of the offer itself, but rather his attitude during that whole scene. What you describe sounds romantic, marrriage in everything but name, and I get that. However, the way Benedict offers it (as if it's obvious, she'll say yes) and his reaction to her "no"... That's what makes the offer problematic and icky on many levels. I'm gonna quote the scene in the comment for those, who are interested or don't remember the exact wording. But yeah, for now let's just say that he's not taking the rejection like a gentleman, instead he acts like a privileged lustful prick. I wish I could filter that as well, but I can't. I'm still excited to see Benophie's season, though ❤. You're right, it is most likely that they won't keep the problematic parts from the book, so I'm hopeful. Thank you for your amazing content. I'm so glad you found sponsorship 😁 You deserve that for your hard work! Take care of yourself ❤
@alaj.94333 ай бұрын
Sophie: I can't do this Benedict. Benedict: I don't see why not. Sophie: I can't be your mistress. Benedict: And why is that? Sophie: Because I don't want to. Benedict (with anger): You wanted to just a few seconds ago. Sophie: You're not being fair. I wasn't thinking. Benedict: You're not supposed to be thinking. That's the point of it. Sophie: Well, I won't be your mistress. Benedict (hissing): And what are you going to do instead? Work as a housemaid? Sophie: If I have to. Benedict: You'd rather wait on people... polish their silvers, scrub out their damned chamber pots than come and live with me. Sophie: Yes. Benedict: I don't believe you. No one would make that choice. Sophie: I did. Benedict: You're a fool. Sophie: ... I won't be quoting the whole scene (chapter 12 btw), but I'd like to add that a moment later he also says: "No, you *didn't* think" & "You bloody fool [...]" & "And you're not being intelligent". So he manages to insult her intelligence four times during the scene. When he finally comes to the conclusion that she's an illegitimate child, he is relieved, because her rejection "has nothing to do with him and everything with her" and he's thinking: "It was a serious moment, but by God, he wanted to break out in a grin because now she's come to London with him and be his mistress". Mind you, she still didn't say yes to his offer, he just assumed she would 'cause he said: "I don't care if you're illegitimate". Then a bit later comes the blackmail part, which is very off-putting. I could make a whole list of things that made the scene hard to read, because there are more, but I think I made my point. Disclaimer: I'm not trying to say that people, who like this book, are problematic or wrong to say it's the best one. I'm just pointing out that the offer itself is not the problem, but Benedict is. Most people just simplify their thoughts by saying "the offer was disgusting" 'cause this way it's easier and shorter.
@Almarilys3 ай бұрын
Completely agree with you 💯👏 Book Benedict was ok up until the moment of the offer. I'm not a fan of the type of offer he made to her, but given the era, and how his feelings are all over the place with the lady in silver / Sophie the maid, the offer itself shouldn't come as a surprise much. But the way he handles Sophie's rejection, and then manages to belittle her / insult her (whether he does it consciously or not) was severely disappointing to me. This book is definitely not my favourite (love the masquerade element, never loved much the Cinderella trope, but I have never ever loved it before that) but one of the strength of the book is definitely Sophie, who's among my favourite female characters in the Bridgertonverse. But book Benedict had moments where he seriously disappointed me. Again not so much the offer (even if the offer is icky you have to remember the whole context), than the way he reacts/behaves. I'm not really worried for the show, the way they wrote Benedict is already good. We'll have to see what they will do of the offer itself (are they gonna alter it in someway?), but whatever the offer itself, I'm sure Benedict's reaction in the show will be much better and much more interesting. Luke T being a shakespearian actor, I am really looking forward to see him portray a heartbroken Benedict. And so many other emotions. I cannot wait to see it!

Seems to me (from what I know of the plot) Penelope might be very useful in the resolution of certain issues, while Colin might well have some advice for his older brother--as a man who knows that it is like to find and wed a True Love/Soul Mate/Heart's Answer. I am also anticipating Eloise growing in S4, as she spends time in John and Francesca's castle with Michaela there, then seeing her favorite brother fall so utterly in love and marry.

@@heatherlingard9444 Maybe! Part of me wants to point out while their son is presumably Lord Featherington, his and their family name is still Bridgerton. But that gets into some nuances I frankly don't believe the show is much interested in even a tiny bit (honestly they never get that kind of thing right EVER--there is absolutely no way, for example, anyone can leave someone else a title, that is just not something which could be done then or now).

regarding the problematic tropes of the time period, i think its important that we can have rational and productive discussions on these issues. we do have to look at the material with an eye to the time period that the story is set in. we do need to remember that it is fiction, and so we shouldn't expect an accurate depiction of the era the story is set in or the era that the story was written in. the problem is as we become more tolerant of differences in people, we become less tolerant of people making mistakes and fail to give them a chance to change. the whole point of a fairy tale is for it to be a lesson. to use that information to learn, to grow, and to change. what's the point if you're not going allow people that chance to change? the whole point of Benedict being the way he is at the start is for him to grow and change. perfect characters are boring. it's the imperfections and the journey that makes a story worth telling. those people bitching about these characters at the beginning of their arcs miss the point entirely.

Also, since Sophie is a wise person in the books is it possibly that she’ll offer Benedict some excellent advice when it comes to his art? 🖼️ Like Violet and the other Bridgertons can be confidants Benedict turns to when he has questions about his growing relationship with Sophie and his search for the Lady in Silver. But then Sophie can be the main person whom he confides in about his art.

@@MearnieToonLots of very terrible people on the internet, and the fandom at large has been somewhat toxic regarding any of the characters being played by POC and their actors (particularly those who are darker skinned or queer) and especially bad to the ones that are part of changes to the book series. And while it is ok to be frustrated or upset they changed things from a book, it's an adaptation it's going to be different, but they're using that excuse to be racist/homophobic and it's disgusting to see. I mentioned the fans previously and while I personally don't think it's as far off from what is usually seen in internet fan spaces, unfortunately it's pretty common to see :( but after season 3 a lot of that racism came out hard with regard to John and Michaela Stirling and many of the POC actors have spoken out about being harassed by "fans" of the series and it making it difficult for them to want to work on the show.

Fandom is such a double-edged sword. It is lovely to have people to obsess over shows with, but then you get such mean arguments over random things. It is ok to have different favorites! To Sir Philip with Love is mine, and I had no idea how unpopular that opinion was until recently. 🙄 A staple of the genre is these interconnected series with a new sibling/friend/teammate as the romantic lead each book. With a new love interest and new tropes. Everyone has their favorite, and that is ok because we all love the world they inhabit and the HEA. And yes, these books were written 20 years ago and the "ideal" romantic lead looked different then. Thank goodness we have all evolved and that Netflix/Shondaland are committed to the spirit of the books, if not the law. If I don't love every decision they have made, who cares! They clearly have a graat deal of respect and affection for the source material and that is more than many adaptations get.

Benedict is absolutely terrible in the book lol it's alright to admit that, we don't have to make excuses for him or filter things out. I can't name a single moment where i can genuinely say i liked him because he just behaved like a selfish man-child whose needs come before everybody else. I felt bad for sophie and how much she justified the sexual pressure due to her love for benedict and at some points, his thoughts of sophie were just genuinely predatory and manipulative. also some highlights that just pissed me off such as; "It would mean compromise, mostly on her part." and "He knew that she wanted respectability, but she knew he could not give it to her.", and of course: "He was so damned afraid she would change her mind if he allowed her to put any of her thoughts into words..." right before sleeping with her was insane. Nope, he is a detestable character in the books idgaf about the time period or that Sophie justifies his behavior. His character is so much better in the show so i hope they don't ruin him but rather show that he's not there just for comedic relief and has depth to him (etc more of the scenes when he explained to anthony the power of poetry). i hope sophie is the one that helps benedict find himself bc he seems to be completely lost since season 1.

Thank you for saying the thing. I’ve been reading historical romance since I was (looking back now) concerningly young. And yes, every single hero has a moment, or 12, that if you look at it from a 21st century pov, are absolutely unacceptable. However, they’ve already proven that in the show, those problematic scenes are (mostly) redirected. Like with Colin’s proposal. Book Colin and show Colin said the exact same words. Book Colin was impatient, angry, and a little condescending. Show Colin was sweet, young, and joyful. So I’m not worried about Benedict’s season. I can’t wait to see what else you have to say about the new season!

And im curious to see if they are going to go with the same plot but in a different way. like her being a maid at the dowager house or maybe the new staff that Kate gets once violet leaves. I think the bigger issue is his family and ruining Hyacinth by marrying a commoner. other than that I think he would marry her anyway. Hopefully we see Gregory going off to Eaton. Hyacinth will start to learn how to be a Lady. this season has the potential to give us all the things we want. the crew updates and great family moments along with Bens humor and teasing. they better give us a introduction with mask... or some teaser trailer with her at the topof the stairs or something. lol

not sure if any of this will make sense but here we go: {includes minor plot and character spoilers for an offer from a gentleman} i think the most “problematic” part of an offer from a gentleman FOR ME is that benedict- even with his unmistakable attraction towards and feelings for sophie- keeps holding out for his “mysterious woman in silver” (ignoring the fact that she and sophie are one and the same because HE doesn’t know it at this point in the story). i just don’t see how it is fair for sophie to be coerced and essentially blackmailed into going back to london with benedict to work in his mum’s household + face the risk of being exposed everyday for benedict to be holding out on her- i guess i’m on the same page as you sammy when it comes to class divide and how much of a MASSIVE deal it is for benedict to eventually come to the decision that he does (pre-discovering sophie’s identity of course). but it’s the parts before he reaches that decision that i can’t ignore because it could have ended so badly for sophie. she isn’t only putting her steadfast morals in jeapardy, she’s literally putting her physical self in danger just because benedict wants to be close to her (plus at this point in the story he feels lust for her more than anything else). obviously it all works out in the end and benedict comes to understand sophie’s situation and point of view- but the thing that left a bad taste in my mouth was how careless and selfish he was being, thinking he could have both sophie and his woman in silver without giving sophie the chance to make her own decisions. (she could have easily stayed SAFE AND LOOKED AFTER in my cottage or whatever it was called and worked with the sweet couple who manage it, did she really have to go to london with him? he only forced her because he was so sure he could convince her to become his mistress and it was so satisfying to see sophie reject his offer again and again- that’ll teach him to blackmail her!!). anyway, i agree with you sammy- there is A LOT in historical romances that you kind of just have to ignore (if it bothers you) or accept because it just comes with the territory. benophie are my second favourite couple too (after kanthony of course)!!

I do have one question though, can we expect more videos on Season 3 of Bridgerton or are you done with that content?

I so wish I could share in the wholehearted enthusiasm, because Yerin looks like a *really* great choice for Sophie, but I'm very hesitant on how well the writers are going to adapt this story. The optics of a wealthy white man trying to pressure a working class (specifically domestic) East Asian woman into sex work (because that's what being a mistress *is*, no matter the romantic trappings) are also...not great. Desperately hoping they handle the story well, but the focus the show has on melodrama at the expense of characterization has me worried. Especially because Bridgerton has taken a race-conscious casting approach, and yet they so often choose to ignore the Unfortunate Implications that their casting can sometimes add. Even so, I am looking forward to seeing these two onscreen together. ETA: I have (and will continue to) happily read this trope in romance novels, but it's undeniable that Yerin being East Asian adds a certain distastful dimension to this sort of story, and past seasons *have* shown a lack of care with regards to certain story beats. Which is to say - not every discussion of 'problematic elements' is contextless discourse. You may not consider yourself to be the best person to address those issues (rightly or wrongly), but handwaving it all away by sayng, 'well, that's the trope' is a tad dismissive. (To reiterate - I don't think you should feel that you're required to tackle topics you're uncomfortable speaking on, only that you not downplay them.)

Yeah, as much as I appreciate their attempts to be both color-blind and color-conscious in their casting, it frustrates me from a storytelling (and meta perspective) that it only matters when convenient for the plot or not. As you said, the choices are fine if you think about none of the implications, and some of those implications matter either in or out of story. As an east Asian, I'm hopeful about having a new protagonist in a romance, particularly in a regency/period drama, where there are rarely any Asians at all. But again, as you pointed out, the offer for her to be his mistress as both a lower class and specifically a lower class East Asian woman, has some really big implications. Problematic is a word that I think undersells the way it's just something so historically shown to be a real life thing that happened so much. So while I think the showrunners/writers have some leeway to change the way its going to play out, I really hope they consider it a lot when they are writing that plot. I think it's very fair to say wait and see and be cautiously optimistic. And re: the ETA, also hard agree. Just because something is problematic but you don't mind it doesn't change that it is a problem for others in the audience, and while maybe it is a little silly to get worked up about a fictional world where it's regency in name only for the aesthetic and we're getting pop orchestra covers, it does at times reflect the real world. It can't be a staple of the trope and acceptable for the times and also be allowed to break whatever rules they want just because you (Sammy Bates, a white woman) (not op) don't want to deal with the implications in the silly regency romance show.

There’s no perfect person so why make the characters perfect and PC regarding their personalities and speech. That’s not reality. Also, love the casting for Sophie! Cheers!

I love colin and pen and cant wait to see them as a married couple and loved up with thier son but i am also looking foward to bendicts story line and if she is sophie i would rather wait until shonaland and the official bridgerton video of announceing sophie then good casting as she is very pretty i read a recent interview with the show runner jess and she said that she asked nicola and luke to return for series 4 as she still has more story to tell and thier must be a reason why she wanted thier son to be lord featherington and move in to the featherington house so i think sophie will be employed as a maid for colin and penelope in the updated featherington house that way she will keep seeing bendict as he will be there most of the time due to him being close to colin

if they don't have them dance to an extremely intense orchestral version of You & Me by Jennie Kim of BlackPink I will be disappointed cuz now I've envisioned it in my head and it's just Chef's Kith. but this is just my opinion. before everyone decides to tell me I'm wrong and how their picks are better. this isn't a discussion argue with the wall and your momma's its not my fault I'm correct.

I don’t understand the fussiness about his offer either. In 2024 we have tons of women happily accepting this exact SAME offer! Many of whom never get the ending Sophie apparently does. To be fair, I haven’t read the book, so I’m not sure if he was a complete jerk about the offer. From what Sammy said, it doesn’t seem like it. Even if he was though…there are men (decidedly NOT gentlemen) who make this offer and women are eager to accept it (see any of a Nick Cannon’s dozen baby mamas for reference) 🤷🏾♀️. If you don’t like the offer being made, decline it! Sophie did. Sounds like she wouldn’t settle for less than marriage and it forced Benedict to step up. Instead of the outcry, maybe they should model her behavior. It’s so odd to me how our delicate sensibilities are so selective.

Maybe spoilery! The problem wasn’t that he asked (in the book), it was that he didn’t take her no for an answer.

I just finished When He was Wicked and I was shocked at how violent Michael is, how he threatens to impregnate Francesca against his will and then says if she wont marry him, she has to leave the estate. I was like, sir, excuse me, do we need an intervention. All the book love interests are dicey, and Benedict is no different I am confident the show will do an excellent job cherry picking the best bits of the novel and jettisoning the rest (Lake Scene , Lake Scene, Lake Scene).

Just because you filter things out doesn't mean other people need to filter things out. Certainly, I agree that the show probably won't go down that road as what the books did. BUT please do not disregard other peoples' concerns, just because you can filter it. The books are old, yes, but it's important to adress the issues, so new books may move on from those problematic and toxic traits.😊 Other than that I'm very happy with Yerin being Sophie. She will be perfect in the role I'm sure.🥰

You liked Offer From A Gentleman? I’m shocked… I’ve read four of the Bridgerton books, and it was the most icky. But I love you.

I have to say I hate this book and hated Benedict. So I am not excited about next season. Unless they change his abusive behavior, trying to convince her to have sex and be his mistress I have no interest. I'll just have to hope they give them a 5th season and in 4 years we get to El.

They don’t even need the masks to be the actual costumes. It could be a mask that they all use just for that video. Brilliant marketing @sammy Shonda take notes✍🏻
