Woke up at 5am with contractions, When I arrived at the hospital at 8am i was already 8-9cm dilated. Once in the room i was at 10cm and its time to push! Baby girl arrived at 8:57. Everyone told me they rarely see a fast delivery for a first time mom. I just kept breathing through the contractions, and when pushing I told myself im getting closer to my baby, thank you!

I just wanted to share a tiny bit about my first delivery 36 years ago. I did manage to dilate to around 5 by the time I was on the bed in hospital, and I had a midwife to assist me. My 1st birth was 5 hours from my water breaking to the actual birth, my 2nd birth was 1 hour 40 minutes, beginning with contractions and some bleeding, and my 3rd was 3 hours after losing the mucous plug. Obviously I had riveting pain like most women, and I used this kind of a thought process and vision each time I had a contraction, which made the contractions work for me more efficiently. I envisioned my cervix opening up a little bit more with each contraction, and almost having appreciation for myself and what I was doing. In actuality that’s exactly what’s happening and going on, and by concentrating on that inner vision I was very much in control. And truthfully, it was the only way to get out of that pain, bcuz it made me angry. That probably sounds funny, but that’s how I felt. I have to say that with my 3rd birth, I really wanted some way out of it, and was even hesitant to walk out to the car. And after maybe 10 minutes, knowing that I needed to get on with it, I was off to get it done and over with. It’s been fun reading others comments, we all are magnificent beings to be able to have live births and live to tell about them♥️! Good luck to all of you. Now raising them is another long and huge undertaking that came with some much bigger headaches than what we all were probably planning on, but we’re all still amazing!

My labor went by so fast! I guess early labor started Friday 11/15 after my doctor's appt. (she had checked my cervix. I was 50% effaced and 0 dialated at that time). Mild back pains continued the next day. But come 11/17 (this past Sunday), back labor pains REALLY picked up and I honestly thought I was still in early labor. But things progressed so fast. The only way to bear through my pains were pacing around. I also took two baths and two showers. I realized I was in active labor when the bath wasn't "slowing things down." So, I told my fiance that he should start packing his hospital bag. He had to do a few things before we decided we should probably go in to L&D. I did more pacing. When we arrived, I half expecting to be sent home, but to our surprise, I was already 7cm dialated! My plan was to go unmedicated. They still offered the epidural and/or IV Meds. I declined. I did however, use the nitrous oxide, but only 3 brief inhales 3 times. It didn't get rid of the pain but it did make the contractions SEEM shorter. Shortly after we learned I was 7cm (probably 30mins later), the contractions got super intense to the point that pacing no longer helped but embracing my fiance with him applying pressure on my low back did. Real soon after those began, I told the nurses that I "feel pushy." It was go time! My fiance said I pushed for only 45 mins. I did opt in for a mirror. I nearly asked to change pushing positions because my legs were cramping from having to spread them open, but when I saw that the doctor had a good grip of my baby's head, I was like, "okay, I'm ready." Three or 4 more good pushes and my little man was born. I wanted to say thank you for your videos. The breathing techniques and all other information you provided helped tremendously! I am so happy with my experience and super proud of myself! I remained calm throughout the whole thing which helped the process go along nice and smooth!

But they induced me and 5 hours went by and i couldnt relle handle my contractions, so i asked for the epidural. Knowing for future knowledge that me being numb down there was a very good idea just incase i ripped. The key to a good birth is letting ur body do the work and pushing with every contraction. Good nurses midwives etc. I had my sons godmother in the room with me so limit the ppl. But also the urge to finally meet and love the person you spent 9 months making is also a good motivation

I’m stumbling upon your videos now, and they’re so healing to me. I just delivered my second daughter a couple days ago and it was a scary fast labor (contractions started at 1:11am, arrived at the hospital at 2:10am at 5cm, 2:20am was 10cm, 2:28am baby was delivered) and my baby girl was sunny side up so the back labor was incredibly intense. It was so fast and delivering naturally was unplanned, it was quite a traumatic experience for me because I never had a moment to stop and process what was happening. Your videos have been such a blessing in helping me process what I experienced and put knowledge behind the images and memories I have from my birth.

Great question! A good and easy way to get baby in a good position is to be on all fours or drape your chest over a birth ball or stack of pillows so your tummy is suspended. It gives baby more room to turn and also uses gravity to encourage them to turn their head so they're facing your spine!

Just had baby with pitocin. First was long labor (30h) I got the epidural around 7cm1-2 I think I was starting transitioning because I was having the shivers but juste the beginning of it and since labor had already been going on for 18h I felt already at the maximum I could take and I thought that becauSe baby was sunny side up transition phase was going to take long. This time I wanted to try natural if things went a little faster. Ended up needing to do an induction at 40w4daus because baby had some growth restriction so I was kinda disappointed already and had little faith I would be able to do naturally since I hear pitocin contractions can be quite rough from the get go and something juste scared me mentally about being induced and not letting my body naturally start labor. I expected a long process and the staff warned me as well that it can be long. Well they put the foley balloon in. I had mild contractions every 8min that I couldn’t sleep through but were ok. 1h30 later they weren’t completely able to pull it out and instead of giving me another ripening agent like the tablet they decided to go directly with pitocin: they told me the logic was if it got to were I got too many contractions they could turn it off. They started pitocin and I had mild contractions getting a little closer together about half hour later they pulled out the balloon meaning I was 3-4 cm I was having mild contractions but manageable I was happy to have the ballon put because it felt weird inside. Felt better for a bit. I believe they increased the pitocin dose within 30min already. That’s when things kicked in big time but I had no idea. Contractions got more painful and close together in the matter of 10min? They got to every 3-4min to where I had to stop talking. That’s when I knew I would need epidural because in my mind they had just taken the balloon out which meant I was only 4cm 10min before that so I probably still was 4cm or so and they already felt super strong and close the way my contractions felt with my first at 6-7cm. I told myself I’m not taking long time of this especially if it will get worst at around 8-10cm. So I told the nurse I would most likely get epidural. 5min later they were 1-2min apart I started shivering. And started shivering some more every contractions . She brought the material for the epidural at this point I was on the phone with my mom to where I couldn’t talk through contractions and I told my nurse to slow down the pitocin because things felt way too intense thinking I was probably only 4-5cm not able to catch a break in between contractions and contractions were simply to sharp for that stage. She did .then 1 contractions later I was not able to talk I felt the pressure coming down I started panicking because I knew it meant I was 9-10 cm I had no control over my body I could feel the head getting expulsed with the contractions. I started saying no no I was so in denial that this was happening thinking I had the ballon taken out 30-40 min ago how?? The anesthesiologist for the epidural came in and at this point I was just telling them to hurry and do the epidural I didn’t want to push I felt like everything was happening too fast and my body went from 0-100 ans wasn’t coping hence all that shaking. I was hyperventilating couldn’t listen to the nurse about the breathing because everytime I took deep breaths like she was telling me to I could feel baby descending more into the canal and I wanted to wait for the epidural and almost hold the baby (even tho you. Can’t do that your body just expulse it) for me I didn’t like that feeling of having no control over what was going on. I was so scared about tearing because I tore in the labia area with my first and during this pregnancy I was so dry down there that I suffered superficial cuts from scrubbing vaginal area and rubbing so I had to use ointments to help sooth. Since my skim was already all cracked with cuts and swollen and dry I thought for sure I was going to tear. So I started panicking when the head was coming down. I told them the pressure was getting intense I was scared to sit. The Anesthesiologists was nice enough to hurry up. But it was too late. He did the procedure and I asked how long and kept saying how long . He told me can take few minutes it depends. Contractions were now short but super close and I kept saying no no no and was almost crying she had the staff come in they were asking to check me but I didn’t want to because I knew they were gonna tell me I’m 10cm ans they can see the head and I need to push but I was in denial waiting for the epidural to kick in. I kept saying no I don’t want this no no I want epidural how long etc . Few minutes went buy baby heart kept dropping nurse forced to turn me on different sides but didn’t change then on all 4 and didn’t change . While I was on all 4 I guess someone checked me and felt the head and told you don’t have a choice you have to push they put me on my back held my legs back and told me I had to push back to back baby’s umbilical cord was around neck now not only I kept saying I could feel all the pressure my back the front etc but I knew I was probably going to tear bad since I had to get baby out fast with forceful quick pushing . I pushed and pushed for 2minutes and half at this point to me the pressure was so intense I didn’t feel the ring of fire and surprisingly didn’t tear!!! Miracle. Epidural started kicking in few moments after when I was delivering placenta and they were checking my vaginal area. Only ended up working on the left like it did with my first. Anesthesiologists said sometimes could be your body how your spine is and also maybe for me it takes longer to kick in. They never had time for the catheter in the urethra like they normally do then they took out the epidural since I didn’t need it anymore only my left leg was numb for few hours after. Ended up going natural but I felt not ready for it as I didn’t see it coming I dilated from 4-10 in less than an hour even the staff were all shocked and my son was born exactly an hour after taking the fooley balloon out. I’m not having any more kids but if I did I’m taking epidural as soon as I get to the hospital.

I wish people wouldn’t skip over the birth of the placenta. Delivering the placenta can have its struggles and it can still be important to breathe and be supported during that time. The midwives will most likely push down on your uterus to help it contract (and that can be uncomfortable). Just focus on your baby and breathe. If you’re at risk of hemorrhage or anemic, they may have to pull the placenta out manually. Ask your midwife about this. It’s nothing to be afraid of at all, just a heads up to not skip through mental preparation or making sure you have support when birthing the placenta. 😊

I was preparing myself with videos like yours, about when to push and how to breath through contractions. When the pressure of the baby's head against me, everything was going so fast and the fight-or-flight senses kicked in. The nurses and OB/GYN came rushing in and were pressuring me to push long and hard when the ring of fire was super painful. I ended up getting the baby out in, probably only 20 minutes of pushing, but ended up with 3rd degree tears. Ugh! Hopefully I'm better prepared next time, because I never want to do that again and was so panicked, I ended up listening to the staff instead of my body, despite everything I studied and wrote in my birth plan.

I had one with my last, but am hoping to try and go without this time. Some down sides I experienced was, baby getting stuck in the canal as I had to lay on my back, fluid on his lungs, which was easily resolved but meant he went straight to observation and I didn't get to have skin to skin contact, sleepy baby and difficulty latching can be an issue and finally I couldn't walk around afterwards, for quite a while as mine worked so well that I couldn't feel my legs or move them! But in saying that, they are all treatable things and I may feel labour pain again and opt for an epidural.

Hi, Ht. Good point. For me personally, the epidural slowed down my previously quick moving, manageable labor to almost nothing. Which then required Pitocin to try and get things going again. I didn't like being bound to the bed and wanted to be up moving, but couldn't for obvious reasons. ;) The epidural and Pitocin led to major swelling in my body and high blood pressure. I still have pain 4 years later in my epidural site. After watching Bridget's videos and knowing how close I actually was to giving birth when I got the epidural, I wish I would have just kept doing what I was doing and declined the epidural. That being said, both my sisters also got epidurals (one is a mom of 3) and she loved it. They both continued to progress quickly, didn't have the swelling/water retention, or high blood pressure. Different experiences for different women. :)

The ring of fire happens in pushing phase of labor so are we supposed to do shallow breathing to stop Ring of fire or j-breathing? because according to your breathing video we are suppose to do j-breathing during pushing phase. I am confused. Please reply.
@BridgetTeyler
@BridgetTeyler 5 жыл бұрын
It depends on the mama! If a woman is experiencing the ring of fire and isn't fully dilated yet, she may want to do shallow breathing to slow down the process of birth to help baby slowly stretch the vaginal tissues. If mama is already dilated, then j breathing will help push baby out even if she is experiencing the ring of fire still.

I will be 28 weeks tomorrow with baby #3. I've had super fast labors and births and I'm so hoping for another quick one. With my son, I went into labor around 5:30-6am but I thought I had food poisoning and that's why my stomach was cramping lol. Finally around 10:30ish my sister asked me how far apart my "stomach cramps" were and I said idk like 3-4 minutes and she freaked out and was like "omg you're in labor!!!" I was a week out from my due date and I had never had a kid before so I was clueless lmao!! I got to the hospital at 1:50pm, got in a room at 2;10pm and had him at 2:39pm. They were still asking me the registration questions as I was trying to push him out lol. I technically ended up having him before I was even fully admitted. I had no time for an epidural or any pain meds so I had him completely natural. I was 7cm dilated and 100% effaced and the Dr broke my water and I went right to 10. 3 pushes later, he was here. It was crazy fast. Then with my daughter, she was IUGR so they wanted to induce me at 37 weeks. She decided she wasn't waiting on an eviction notice so my water broke like 15 min after I crawled into bed at 10:40pm at 36 weeks. At first I thought she was on my bladder so I went and cleaned up and went to lay back down and it happened again. So I put a pad on and tried to get back to bed. Exactly 10 minutes after I got laid back down I got my first contraction. I timed them for an hour and they started coming 5-6 minutes apart so I woke my husband up around 11:40pm and I told him I think my water broke and I think I'm in labor. He freaks out and starts getting dressed and throwing stuff in the car. We got to the hospital around 12:10am and I had her at 3:30am. I ended up listening to my Dr with her and got an epidural and it didn't even work right. It still hurts in that spot over 3.5yrs later too. It also severely raised my blood pressure and made me feel awful. I'm going to really try to labor at home for as long as I can and try to do another unmedicated birth because I felt way better after my first birth than after my 2nd. Your videos are so great and informative, I'm so glad I found them and at the perfect timing too because I have 12 weeks left to watch these videos and learn as much as I can. Thank you!!

Great question! When women experience the ring of fire the most common reaction is to push less, but your body is going to do a lot of the pushing all on it's own at that point. So either way your body is going to be doing the work. It's really difficult to resist the urge to push by the end, so when you're feeling like you need to push, go for it!

These videos are great, but it's good to remember that these are generalizations and birth can go so many different ways. With my second baby my placenta felt like jello, but with my third my placenta was extremely difficult to birth, even harder than getting my second baby out had been. I felt totally blindsided by the experience and had a very hard time emotionally with my placenta struggles, I think partly because I was so surprised and confused that I was having to work extremely hard to get through the placenta part. Now I'm pregnant with my fourth and I'm working on preparing myself to practice radical acceptance all throughout birth and lean deeply into my intuition and what my body is telling me.

Any way of helping shoulders come out? I’m attempting a VBA2C in December. My last VBAC attempt was 4 days of labor, 12 hours of pushing (4 at birthing center and 7 at hospital with epidural), the last 9 his head was at the exit point and I only felt the ring of fire once. His head had two severe molding spots and his head was compacted so much they had to do a secondary cut to get him out. I also had traumatic scaring from my first c-section that took about 5 minutes to cut away, which we believe caused his right shoulder to get stuck. I’m seeing a womb care and scar tissue specialist to have all the scar tissue broken apart throughout my pregnancy. So, any tips to shorten labor would be greatly appreciated.

Wow, my OB asked me to take pitocin when I had this rest period. I thought it was bad but now I wish I took that rest instead! I wish I knew. Also, I pushed for so long but I had no tears and wonder if that long pushing was my body's way of preventing tears. Thankful for my body! Thanks for sharing. :)

I feel like I asked for the epidural when I was in transition. I was 8cm dilated and was having the worst contractions and was projectile vomiting. I couldn’t control the pain of my contractions or my vomiting, so I asked for the epidural. I secretly prayed that I would push baby out by the time they arrived with the epidural, but that didn’t happen 😭 I got the epidural and was so happy to not feel the pain anymore. 2 hours later, I pushed baby out. I often feel sad and beat myself up about getting the epidural because I so badly wanted to birth unmedicated, but I gave in. I’m so grateful and thankful for a healthy baby and an amazing labor and delivery, but I don’t know how I could have continued with the pain and vomiting for any longer. I pray next time I will get my wish of an unmedicated labor 🙏🏼

I'm on baby 4 and I'm so worried I will tear. I'm trying to make sure i practice a lot more with this baby so I don't tear...it's hard to find doctors who support you in labor, they try to force a modern approach on me every single time and I can't just birth the way I want to.

I don't know why it's called that. It felt like my cervix was taring. Kinda like when you think your shit is taring your ass but it's baby taring your cervix. Even though they are not.

My first child got stuck, and I was in transition for 3 hours!!! I was asking for epidural after an hour, but I had to wait in line. It was crazy.

Hi, I'm wondering how streching and massage of these areas along with eating date, drinking raspberry leaves tea, applying primrose oil may affect that burning sensation. Last pregnancy I used only massage but without too much streching and I've experienced the ring of fire which ended up with rupture by midwife (she told me my baby wasn't well at this point which is impossible for me to verify) and it actually gave me relief. Also, I learned that, while on all four, I can lower my chest so that my hips are much higher and that way my baby goes down slower but does that help at that advanced stage of labour when you feel a strong urge to push? I'd love your insight. Thanks!

It's so easy. It's freaking amazing. We are conditioned to fear this and depend on the hospital (nurse doctor epidural.) Research until you can answer every question you have yourself. Prepare. Then try it. We were literally made to do this. It doesn't have to hurt. Mine didn't. Its beautiful and made Me feel like the most bad ass woman on the planet. You CAN do this
