Nice work on the fan mounting and I'm betting that makes a huge difference. As for the thermostat, I hope that works for you but will share that I use a Hayden Electric Fan Adjustable Thermostat on my 07 Jeep to turn on the cooling fan at low speed after a hot soak when sitting in parking lots when shopping, etc for a few minutes as under hood temp would go crazy high since the engine compartment is small, unventilated, and has catalytic converters in it adding heat. It cured a lack of power problem that followed. It might work well for your set up there if the sensor you're using now doesn't do the trick. Thanks for sharing.

This is pretty cool! Though my gaming PC has more fans in it than this does. But this should help protect the carbs from getting heat soaked. Perhaps some inspiration could be taken from the Volkswagen Beetle. They use a centrifugal fan driven by parasitic power through a belt connected to the engine crank. Though that fan does have quite a large radius to be able to generate the speeds needed for adequate static pressure. And a great deal of shrouding is used to isolate and funnel the cooler air on the top of the engine being directed down through the cylinders and out of the bottom.

I just love people who think out of the box and have practical abilities. This channel reminds me of Allen Millyard's channel, another person who's ability I admire. Forget computer fans, this is a nonsense. Franklin passenger motor vehicles in the US in the 1920's used air cooled engines, what did they do to cool their engine's? I would run cooler temperature range spark plugs to stop detonation issues. Back in the day I used to ride a high performance air cooled two stroke motorcycle. I would change to a cooler spark plug on hot days to stop spark plug fouling and detonation.
@ravenof1985 Жыл бұрын
depending on the exact specs those fans probably wont do the job, there are "server" versions which will be thicker,louder and move a lot more air. or you could use a couple of small transmission cooler fans as they would fit in that configuration but move way more air.

How do you keep your engine oil cool? That could be an issue for cylinder heat because of the oil heating up and breaking down. VW aircooled engines always have a external oil cooler inside if the doghouse that keeps the oil from overheating. I saw your oil pump in a video you posted. Maybe you could make a remote system that could be routed to the differential fan since the fan always turns even when the tractor is idling. Just a thought. BTW great engineering job friend. Those fans will be insufficient, you risk engine seizures from over heating, even an SPAL 5.2” at each location would be barely enough. Those computer fans won’t last, they cannot tolerate vibration. You have time to make some changes 😊
@Desmouffe Жыл бұрын
Of course you are right. If this engine was meant to be used in a "lawnmower race" or something like that this is not enough. When I started this project the goal was: Can I build an engine in my garage that maybe, maybe will start and run. It was never meant to leave the testbench. It has many faults and weaknesses. The cooling is only one of many. It will be a display-piece in my workshop and maybe a startup on bbq evening.

@@Desmouffe Don't worry about him he is just jealous he has not done something this cool. Besides some of those small fans put out serious airflow an unless they are going to be out in the weather I doubt they will go bad. From the last video of the engine running I did not see no big vigrations. Oh course I hope you are aware we are all going to demand you put this on a dyno. Then the next logical step would be a screw blower or turbo's. Because why not. It is a very talented build you have done with some limited tools too. I mean you have more than most of us but not nothing too crazy.
@Desmouffe Жыл бұрын
@@jvmiller1995 No, no big vibrations but I'm not putting it on a dyno. I don't dare. My biggest fear at the moment is the crankcase. When you cast aluminium I think it should be under pressure. In my case I used an open mould, not even a high funnel ( 10 inches ) . So the density of the aluminium could be better. My fear is the threads for the long studs that keep the cylinders down. I don't dare to tighten them with the right torque.
@donquihote6023 Жыл бұрын
I think you are correct. I don't believe those little fans will move enough air I figured he would go the old VW fan and shroud with an oil cooler method. Use Radiator electric fan instead of belt drive or these tiny fans. Create an air intake box and fan mount in front of the Engine and run Ducts back to the sheetmetal shrouds. Not as pretty, but, greater airflow.

While you may want rubber mounting for the fans, I don't share the common opinion that your two fans are inadequate. The coefficient of convective heat transfer increases dramatically with any movement of air, and your fans provide a fair amount of air movement. It's possible there's a more optimum flow pattern though. Just flipping the fans over to suck air away from the engine rather than blow air onto the engine, may improve cooling.
@Desmouffe Жыл бұрын
Yes, but it will kill the fans. A lot of plastic parts.
@NuffMan_ Жыл бұрын
Computer fans are made more for silence, and less for blowing air. There are indrustial grade fans, that will blow A LOT more air, with proper bearings and such to withstand the use. They also really hate unstable voltage or AC, i had a pc fan on my moped (cant remember why lol) my battery went bad so i drove it a while without a battery, and the fan went up in smoke as the battery wasnt ballasting the charger, it gave a really dirty poweroutput

I think your fans are upside down. They generally scoop air towards the motor side, so the way you have them mounted you are trying to force cold air down on top of a hot engine. It would probably work better to let hot air naturally rise, or at least in my opinion. And as already stated before, those look to be PC fans. If they are, they are way too slow and way too open a design to ever generate any significant pressure. Doesn't mean they can't work, just that you need to be really really careful with ducting, too much will choke any flow at all in which case you'd be better off without any of the shrouding.

I know it's in development: The carb is going to freeze in sustained cold temps w/o a heater isn't it? The intake air system is terrible, guaranteed the outer cylinders are running lean and inners are choking. The headers could have been square tubing at right angles, while the intake should have gotten the airflow treatment, that would have been better, by a lot. The entire philosophy is reversed. I wonder if the outers are even running or pushing at all. It does sound like it has carb problems as well as a consequence of all of this, and it's just running bad. It is 'firing' on all 8, more or less near when it's supposed to, and you can't tell in all that racket. At least a total manifold change, or dual-carb, or both, or port injection. I hope to see all of those things. I *know* this guy is going to argue that his intake is ok, or that he can ignore that he's going to end up with either a low or high-riser type setup to get 1 or 2 barrels to work on 8 cylinders. What he should evolve to is an open plenum 2 carb setup with direct tubes to the cylinders, as nothing else has to be in that space. He should be able to fit that basic engine element under the fan contraption. He's getting heat because of the intermittent leans all over the place, outers mostly. If he fixes that, half the engine is running on choke. It's ok on a brigs or whatever but the intake just ruins it. It's a must-fix otherwise it's a showpiece and what a disappointment, we've seen The Munsters.
