I think it’s done for laughs. Like the whole notion of don’t trade pieces while you are down in pieces isn’t something even most 1000 rated players get. So if they play the correct move he can joke that they see everything and if they don’t he can do the dramatic pause.

Chess, but you must use your pawns for exploration. You can only move your pieces to squares which have been discovered (previously occupied) by one of your pawns, unless that piece is capturing an opposing pieces/pawn
