@@Cricket2731 Yeah, I won't order anything if I can't afford the tip. I also won't if I don't have the tip in cash. There's been a few times where I've decided to eat fast food even though I'd have preferred a dine-in place because I didn't have any actual cash on me. I always tip in cash even if I pay the actual bill with my card. If the service was good enough for a tip, then the server deserves the opportunity to not report that income. :D

The vast majority of Americans would have perfectly understood when Diane said "not a phone in sight," and in fact many of us would (and have) made the same comment. It's not a matter of being lost in translation, but rather of some people maybe not being the sharpest tool in the shed, or just taking everything way too literal. It can even be caused by certain disorders in which people have difficulty picking up social cues, etc. Autism for instance. Also, while Americans do tend to be more expressive in our tone of voice, etc., lots of us are more reserved and have a more dry wit. And lots of us have no trouble understanding British sarcasm and humor. Many of us in fact grew up watching British TV shows, especially comedy.

You’re right about tipping when having to return. NO, if you have to go back for a redo, return, correction, etc….you do NOT tip for a mistake. If, upon returning, you are WAY more than compensated for the wasted second trip due to their mistake, ie.. they go above and beyond what was required, you can then consider a second tip. If the company/person is a true professional, they won’t accept a tip, even if they go above making up the mistake. If I goof and someone had to come back, I do more than required as an apologetic type act, then won’t allow them to leave another dime.

Medical bills are extremely high here in the US, but that's why you need insurance. If you don't have it, you will pay many multiples of what the insured person does. People actually go bankrupt from medical bills.

On insurance: back in 2011 I had to go into the hospital for 4 nights. I didn't have any insurance at the time. The doctor said "don't worry we'll figure something out, you won't have to pay". I did get a massive bill in the mail but I called them and they corrected it. Currently, due to that diagnosis and my financial situation, I got on Medicaid from the government and I don't have to pay for anything medical related except bigger dental things, they pay about half.

Tipping is only expected at bars: $1 per drink, and at restaurants where a waiter comes to your table and then brings the food to you: 15% minimum and then up from that considering how good the service is. I usually do 25% as my minimum because I used to work in the service industry and living off of tips is what makes the job so fun (I would generally make 18 to 25 dollars an hour just on tips and that is on top of the hourly wage I would get, if you pick up the food tipping is optional, but if it is a restaurant I generally tip 10% or $5 whichever is larger.

Here's the Deal Lawrence. Generally speaking. If you're not at a restaurant where someone brings you your food to the table. Tipping is optional. Most places that don't serve at the table usually will have a tip jar next to the register. And this tip is basically optional. However. Like a sub shop or deli where you place your order and then get called up to the counter to pick up your food. If it's a place you go to frequently. It's a good idea to tip. Because if you are a regular customer, ( meaning you go there often), at one of these types of places. If they know that you generally tip when you visit them. They are going to want to take care of you a little more than their non tipping customers. They may take more time making your food so that it's presentation is much better. Or they may pile on the premium meats a little higher. Etc. Basically they will take better care of you than their average run of the mill customers.

Essentially, one tips if one has been "waited on", not just "served". This is not completely accurate, but a good enough rule of thumb. Also, our tipping culture is good for two reasons. 1 - it keeps the cost of the food down in restaurants, and 2 - servers WILL make way more on tips than they ever could with a minimum wage job. I waited tables for decades and made a killing. Plus, barely paid taxes on my wage because of cash tips.

you only should tip if you sit down and they take your order and then bring you your order, TO THE TABLE.... any other instance shouldn't be tipped as it's part of their job and they are most likely being paid a regular wage.... 'beauty' salons (hair, nails, tanning, ect... ) are notorious about demanding tips when they already are being paid a regular wage.... you definitely never tip twice, especially when they make a mistake... I start at 20% and go down from there for bad experience.... now as far as mistakes, IF the mistake was the server's fault, I might greatly reduce the tip, depending on A. their attitude while serving me (good or bad) and B. how well they tried to correct the mistake. IF the mistake was the kitchen's fault, then I just tell the manager about it and make sure that I point out that the server tried their best to get things right. the kitchen staff don't get tips (usually) and thus aren't prone to criticism from customers through tips. but through a manager, they will feel that... and I don't want to punish a good server for a shitty kitchen, so I don't reduce my tip for things out of their control... I do notice how they try to correct the kitchen's mistake as that might get them a bigger tip... ALSO, anytime I have a great experience, I always ask for the manager AFTER I reassure the server that it's nothing bad on their part and in fact that I want to compliment them to their manager... managers and servers always hear about the bad stuff, so I like to also tell them about what they are doing good as well. I can't tell you how many servers and managers light up when I complement the server and/or restaurant for great service and good tasting food.... Also, you can send an email to corporate HQ about your good experience and include the store number (or address) and the server's name (and manager's name if you got it). sometimes the HQ will give a bonus and/or raises to the server (and manager) for good reviews from customers.

If it's something small I will sort it out with the waitress, or server and then tip as I usually would. My husband used to be a favorite with the servers because he always went far beyond in his praise, even leaving a little note of appreciation on the check, plus a fat tip. In the long run your doing those servers who don't do a very good job a service when you tip accordingly to the service you received. As a former server myself. I made really good money waiting tables. But only because I was a very good server and I went out of my way to take care of my customers. So much so that more than once. Customers at another servers table requested that I take over their service. It was embarrassing to the other servers but at the same time they got what they earned and eventually either learned to give better service or found a different job because they just weren't making enough money.

Subway sandwich shop puts out a tip jar, so does Five Guys. They are the same as McDonald's or Burger King. Unless, a server comes to your table, takes your order, and takes care of you, you really don't need to tip. I used to be a bartender way back when I was younger and I used to tip too much, way to much. Now I think, if I'm not tipping at McDonald's than I'm not tipping at Five Guys. Employers need to pay their employees and Americans are being brainwashed about this. In California, in some restaurants they have a health insurance fee on the check for you to help pay for their employees health insurance. If you're not satisfied with the service provided, meaning you weren't given what you asked for and they offered to fix it for no charge, and it's the same person who you tipped for the bad job, no do not tip again. However, if it's a different person and they got it right by all means, you should tip them and I'd tip them considerably better that way when the first person comes back to work not only does she get to hear how someone else had to fix her bad work but how much better the tip is. Tipping is 15%-20%. Personally, I can't stand that you get charged for 911 emergency response for an ambulance to the hospital that's just insane to me. I was a volunteer emergency medical technician so we did what we did out of a desire to serve our supplies fuel and maintenance came from our town. Now I live in Florida if I need an ambulance they better charge me $20 for the ride because I'm about 2.5 miles from the hospital unless I go to the better hospital, which is about 27 miles. Depending on where you live, you'll have regional foods but you can find an amazing array of foods some places better quality than others but that's why I love cooking. If you're thinking of moving to America engage with your neighbors, exercise your constitutional rights, all of them, because you'll never fully accept or fully appreciate those freedoms. Then if you choose not to participate in one of those rights you at least understand it. It's hard to have a position on something if you've never been "hands on" with it. High speed rail is being planned to go from coast to coast and north to south.

The thing about tipping is the business's pay structure. Many restaurants hire servers and pay them a low wage; plus tips. And I think they do this to encourage good service from their servers. But there are those who don't care to serve well and still expect to receive tips. So it can backfire for the employer. Especially if all of the tips are pooled together and then divided up between the servers at the end of their shift. If they would just pay them a decent wage, based on their performance, they could very easily get rid of tipping altogether. And I don't prefer the percentage tipping. If one is to go to a restaurant with low cost meals and the total is $50; 20% is $10usd. And they may have been extremely attentive and pleasant. Where then if one goes to a more expensive restaurant, the server is less attentive and less pleasant, but the total is $200; 20% is $40. Does that server deserve four times the pay because of the cost of the food? I usually pay for performance over cost of the food. As in if I go somewhere and pay but $40 and my server was amazing...I may tip $10, $15, etc. But if I go somewhere and the service sucks, the food cost is $140, I may only tip $5, $10, not even 10%. Tipping, for me, is for the quality of service...not a percentage of the cost for the meal.

@Montweezy Ай бұрын
You do have to think though if they did pay them a decent wage it would be passed on to the customer regardless because the industry would raise the cost of the food so either way the customer will end up paying for it. I absolutely tip based on the quality of service though. Also when I see someone working really hard and not having a goodnight for whatever reason sometimes I will surprise them with a better than 20% tip

Hasn't anyone in your subjugated country figured out that if these waitresses felt oh-so-very underpaid, they wouldn't be working as servers? Institute a minimum wage for those employees, and they would be leaving those jobs in droves. I do know that many 'make out like bandits' due solely from the tips that they get at certain times of the year.

I can make tipping very easy for you. You tip for service, particularly for waiters/waitresses that are attentive and quick to respond to refilling drinks or just generally giving you good service. You don’t tip at any fast food restaurants, primarily because they are being paid a full wage for their employment and they don’t provide wait staff services. I understand the foreign concept in understanding this, but waiters and waitresses in sit-down restaurants that aren’t fast food or takeaway places can earn significantly more, depending on the service they give their customers. A good waiter or waitress can get a tip in excess of 20% of the total bill. Some may even earn much more if they are quick to respond to the requests of their customer. Not everyone earns a tip. Attentive service above and beyond is something we tip people for.

It's not only sit down restaurants, u have to look at your bill and make sure they also might add have a tip included on the bill as well. Tipping is also recommended at services like a hair or nail salon, or other service u may have besides food.

The sarcasm thing is a delusion. We understand it quite easily, in fact I find it's the British that don't understand our sarcasm which is why they think they're having weird interactions. It's them being weird taking everything seriously 😂 Most Europeans are very narrow minded about the US and never open up to learn more. Diane is one that seems to not really get it despite visiting several times. She just doesn't listen, she went to Compton and goes to convenience stores and complains they don't have fresh produce... A convenience store is like a gas station, it's got snacks NOT GROCERIES... She claims she "hadn't seen a vegetable in a week" ... Well that's her choice! Who told her to only eat fast food? That's not how we live here.

Yea, the whole “Americans don’t get British sarcasm is nonsense. The fact is, maybe the British just aren’t good at sarcasm. Sorry, I know it’s their brand and all, but are they really? . Look, if you are going to say something completely deadpan straight, with no tone of voice change, AND, at the same time, not tie the joke into anything previously referenced or nor make some connection to the thing you are mocking, then you are just making a statement. That’s not sarcasm.

Waiter/waitress or bartenders are allowed to be paid under minimum wage due to the expectation that you tip. Delivery drivers may as well but I'm not sure. Those are the only people I feel like a d#$%k if I don't tip. Past that, I feel no guilt not tipping, but occasionally I will for for whatever reason.

Bad service = no tip. Period. I've given 2 cents to prove a point. Otherwise 10-15% is normal, higher if you just want to for some reason or if the service/food was exceptional. Remember, they want you to come back, so they'll do what they can to make you happy. They are providing a service, you aren't providing their livelihood. Once the attitude of the "server" (whatever service it may be) becomes all about the numbers/&& then they are no longer serving YOU, they are servicing themselves. Not a good attitude to have and it is becoming more prevalent, and I don't frequent those places anymore. Oh, if I'm not sitting down? = no tip. If you do go to Arby's get the sauces and use them. The sandwiches don't come with them on the sandwich. You have to choose and put it on yourself. 😉 There's other places that do that as well where some or all of their sandwiches have to be loaded with sauce manually. You're right about the media overplays 'bad things' just for clicks and views. Negative stories outplay real life stories. No one wants to hear about granny walking across the street safely for 60 years. I have a dry sense of humor and get that type of sarcasm. But I can be misunderstood often when someone doesn't know me.

It's difficult.. my husband and I just moved to another state, only 4hrs from our old place and it took about 6 months of trips and planning. I wouldn't recommend settling on a place you haven't visited at least a couple times. And do the things you'd do if you lived there like check out the grocery stores and local parks or whatever you're into. You'd be surprised how different different places are, like in our new city the McDonald's have several sandwiches that we didn't have in our old place. We chose to go at the beginning of fall, end of fall, and in the winter since we were leaving a warmer climate we wanted to be sure we could handle the winters. Another important thing is having a good realtor. Ours was amazing she helped us at every turn and gave us great advice on finding lenders and inspectors. She was always ready to show us homes whenever we were able to come up and when we weren't she'd go herself and give us virtual tours. We actually bought our house based on her virtual tour with a contingency that we would do a walkthrough before closing to be sure. I truly think having a flexible and dedicated realtor makes the experience better. As far as jobs we are lucky enough that we work from home so we are able to take a bigger city salary to a small city with a much smaller cost of living. I would recommend that if possible because that will certainly give you more bang for your buck. Our house was $325k here and it would be at least $750k in our old city so we're really happy with our choice to move. If you can't work remotely just start traveling, find the place first and then start applying for local jobs. Just keep in mind the salary will be less where the cost of living is less, so you need to know how much you'll be spending too.
@willvr4

@@lavenderoh Thanks for the advice, I appreciate it. I'm not looking to buy, just rent. But the same advice applies. (although I assume realtors will be less likely to put in the same effort with a rental considering they'll be getting less commission.)
