Without the drugs, alcohol, neglect and abuse she could be a completely different person now. I would say though, 14 years is not quite long enough to see a complete change in a person. I think she should be in prison for at least another 5 -6 years. Oh, well, only time will tell which one of us is right or wrong though.

This kind of misinformation regarding ADHD is extremely dangerous, and perpetuates the erroneous belief that only “bad kids” have ADHD. As a 45 year old woman with ADHD, I can assure you that it doesn’t make you violent, nor does being medicated for ADHD make you violent… A little education goes a long way! 🤯😳

Actually, this is not completely correct. I have been, and currently work, as a mental health provider and there is a link between ADHD and violent behavior. ADHD has also been linked to being predispositioned to ASPD- Antisocial Personality Disorder. Now, this is not to say that every human being diagnosed with ADHD will be violent or will end up being diagnosed with ASPD, what it is to say is that there is a very strong link between these issues and ADHD and research has shown this. It is also, again, not to say that everyone on ADHD meds will become, or have symptoms of violence, which I did not hear anyone in this video say. ADHD, and any diagnosis you may find in the DSM, is not, and never will be, a black and white situation. When diagnosing if course one will take into account the persons history, exposures to trauma and environment… their temperament and general demeanor. Genetics factors in and so much more. Everyone is like a snow flake and fingerprint, each one of us is unique, hence, not everyone , even with the same diagnosis, will behave in the same way, meaning their symptoms may present themselves differently . It is important not to miseducate people to think just because a person does not experience certain symptoms with a diagnosis another person won’t. By that same token, it is miseducation for a person to assume they will experience the same symptoms as someone else. No one is a carbon copy, which is why those of us actively working in the mental health field have a great responsibility to take the proper time necessary to observe, test and vet out exactly what is going on and ensure that there is a proper diagnosis with proper explanation and education, per person, of their symptoms.

Firstly, how do you know as a mental health provider, and by that I am referring to being a clinician who has been actively diagnosing individuals- including ADHD- for many year. As such, I have focused all of my higher education , and by that I am referring to a Masters degree in Clinical Psychology and Doctorate in Mental Health policies, in mental health. I am also a trauma specialist as this was my chosen area of focus. How do you know that I myself, or my family members, ain’t have the diagnosis you mentioned? You don’t. What does you having family members with these diagnosis and yourself have to do with this? You live with a condition that it appears you were not formally clinically trained about. Lived experience with a diagnosis versus formal, higher education about that diagnosis have zero in common. I lived with Cancer for several years before I went into remission as did many of my family members . Does that mean I knew everything there was to know about Cancer simply because I had that diagnosis or those around me did ? Absolutely not. That is a logical fallacy. In short, I would not Dane to, nor have the temerity to, tell you about what it is to work in Law Enforcement and the same is true regarding those not in my field advising me about it.

Mary Bell has been the youngest female double murderer for decades. She was 10 when she murdered one little boy and had turned 11 when she soon after killed the second little boy. That was in the late 1960ies.

Being potentially paroled doesn't necessarily mean she will go free. She will have to go in front of the parole board and if she doesn't show remorse or is still a danger to society, then she will stay behind bars

Unfortunately, many people go through very rough childhoods but don't become sadistic murderers. TBH, I 'm tired of psychologists and others making excuses for people like Lorraine Thorpe. No one ever wants to discuss the very liberal sentencing laws that exist in many Western countries including the UK. Perhaps if there were real deterrents against such anti-social and malicious behavior, there wouldn't be such an increase in criminality. A modern day Albert Pierrepoint could be an effective antidote! Condolences to the families of Rosalyn Hunt and Desmond Thorpe. Someone like Lorraine Thorpe should never be allowed out again.

there are plenty of cases of children brought up in very nurturing families and still ended up killing their parents. And even more children who had to care of their alcohol or drug dependent mother/father wo went on to live peaceful and productive lives. It's not all in nurture! I know that some of the more impulsive types on the ADHD Spectrum tend to Violence. But they paint a picture of ADHD here that could raise prejudices further.

Well, not everyone is the same with some type of mental condition. This was about her though. And it's never good to quit cold turkey with mental health medication without professional help and start self medicating with alcohol. Plus the trauma/depression and bad evironment. All these factors are explained so it's not adhd alone. Then again, there are more people in similar situations that will never do this.

Depends on what level your adhd is. I have a friend whose son has it and he DEFINITELY has violent tendencies. Just because your whole family has it does not mean you can excuse everyone from having violent adhd behavior!

The level of sadistic torture is extreme. The fact she seemed to enjoy the results and even returned to batter the victim further indicates antisocial and probably the beginning of a psychopath. Her developmental history would be helpful for a more comprehensive understanding of this extremely deranged personality. Her medical history and any MRI evaluation needs to be considered for evaluation of physical damage. Fetal Alcohol Syndrome is also a strong possibility and is inclusive of ADHD symptoms but the effects of the syndrome can cause a complete break from conscience and consequences. This diagnosis really should have been a consideration.

Me and my son has also ADHD. Here is what I've learned so far: It is very important in what kind of environment you grow up in and what help you get and role models you have. When you have ADHD you will need a lot of positive feedback and understanding people around you. This makes it easier to see yourself in a positive light and you will not have so much anxiety that triggers bad behaviour. Also your personality is an important key on how you act. You can have a violent personality with or without ADHD. The privilege to live in a positive and understanding environment is unfortunately rare and therefore many children and adults act out and lose control of their life. This happens to a neuro normal human in a bad environment but the risk of losing control is much higher if you have ADHD, because you have a hard time regulate your feelings, and you are at high risk of become addicted to Alcohol and drugs. If an ADHD person take this fact seriously and really decides to work on her/himself to make it in life, then that person can achieve anything. ADHD is not an excuse for bad behavior and you do have a responsibility to learn how to manage your and/or your child's condition. It is so sad when there are so much misinformation and assumptions about ADHD. It is not what defines you. Your morality and conscience to choose what is right and admit when you have done wrong is what defines you as a human.

That is not at all what I understood of this video. Firstly, I am a mental health provider, focused working in mental Health crisis services, and want to say that absolutely everyone, without exception, responds to trauma differently and everyone also has a different resiliency and breaking point. I could have 20 clients who have astoundingly similar backgrounds regarding traumatic experiences and each one of them will process that and respond to it, mentally, emotionally, behaviorally, and sometimes even physically differently ( such as in cases with somatic disorder diagnosis). Hence, just because you and your 4 Siblings had a similar life to hers does not really mean much since you are all different people, even if your 4 siblings ended up processing issues similar to you.. there are still almost 8 billion people out there who process trauma differently. Genetics, processing, personality, mental Health status and so much more will vary incredibly much. Epigenetic’s has given us incredible insights into how vastly different people are, process and what they are susceptible to. For instance, I have bio family and we were raised in the same home, with the same exposures and lifestyle and upbringing, yet, my family member struggled with Alcoholism while I did not. At the end of the day, everyone is like a snowflake and fingerprint and you can never compare it or black and white the situation. Always remember that you, nor I, am everybody else. Your experience, and that if your siblings, Is yours, but you cannot speak for everyone else in the world.

Where were the grandparents, aunts uncles and rest of the family members to step in and help these children before they went into this lifestyle. People are not all the same, so we don't all react the same to the same diagnosis. That goes with kids as well. If your son isn't temperamental by nature, his reduced impulse control from the ADHD won't make him physically lash out when he's frustrated. And I'm also pretty sure your son doesn't come from a dysfunctional background and has become a heavy drinker.

@@KimmyyCocoa I can relate. Being raised in a violent home does leave a mark on a child's brain. I feared my dad after watching him beat my sister for being fat. She was 10 and I was 4 and my father was an athletic muscular 6ft tall violent man. My mom never ever stopped him. Her advice to me was to pretend it didn't happen. I told her all the cruel things he did to me when she wasn't home. I now realize she didn't care as long as she wasn't being abused. I believe our brains and body are always on alert. Our main focus is to be ready for anything. Sounds smell and always listening for early signs of irritation anger or any escalation of excitement. We never knew what to expect and our brains focus was to be ready for the unexpected. I also believe ptsd can send us right back to the panic we felt as a kid not knowing how to navigate forward.... If I could make a wish for you it would be... To forgive your childhood mistakes and try to love your inner child. A child that needs positive nourishment.... I'm in my 50s and only recently was I able to put it all together. I'm chronically ill and I understand why and how it all ties together. If I could go back and have a do over I would.

I have ADHD, and it seems that the discussion was accurate. Stopping meds is problematic to an adolescent. They said it made her "vulnerable." It seems accurate to me. Stopping any mental health meds without medical help is dangerous and makes one "vulnerable" in many ways. She was warped under the influence of (1) an evil man, (2) her own problematic history, and (3) no doubt, her lack of meds that her body once had been accustomed to. Just because the vast majority of us with ADHD don't turn to violence, doesn't mean that a change in meds would cause major difficulty in a young woman who has multiple other troubles. ADHD, as a minor element, seems reasonable to me to include in the psychological profile of this girl.

Please be extremely careful about what you are saying. I am aN active mental health provider and I work in providing mental health care for those in crisis and what you have said is actually not correct and can spread miseducation. Her behavior absolutely does not meet the provision/ criteria to be diagnosed with Schizophrenia, per the DSM, nor was she even the age for such a diagnosis to be onset. You are welcome to your own opinions but I strongly urge everyone to not throw diagnoses out that that they more than likely do not have the necessary formal education in and for those who are not active clinicians/ work with the current DSM.

This is a fantastic question. I work within the mental health field as a provider and I can say that what is legally Supposed to happen is that the child has an assigned social worker who is mandated and in charge of getting mental health and medication services for the child approved via court. The only options I see that could have occurred is, someone dropped the ball and did not get orders from the courts.. or when returned to families care, since she was no longer a ward of the court, family did not follow up with her treatment and care, which may be a viable option given the nature of alcoholism from her father… or her assigned social worker and treatment team did not ensure she took her meds after it being approved via court. As I said, I work in this field and not but a few months ago I had a huge battle with, truth be told, a CPS social worker and CPS staff due to this staff informing me that they “accidentally left” a child’s medication in a hotel they were keeping him in due to the current epidemic we are having regarding lack of placements for children. I was able to obtain this child’s medication for him and delivered it to CPS myself because I was not going to let that stand. In this case, prior to them leaving the clients meds, the courts had approved the client to take medication. It’s a long day at work but so worth it to make sure nobody is lost, falls behind or slips through the cracks!

ADHD is not an illness it hyper activity that today children are medicated for it. In the early of last century children in the US used to help their parents in farms, city children also helped as much as they could. Later children played outside a lot and they were tired afterwards and calm down, until children started to disappeared, mostly children who played or walked alone, (strength in numbers). So parents stopped letting children play outside without supervision, then parents of hyper active children didn’t know how to deal with their child/ten and also teachers because the children disrupted the class so the solution of psychiatric is to numb those children with medication. Unless those children have violent parents or friends or both, those children just need to have some sort of physical activity they will be focused after getting both therapy and physical activity.

None of the authorities are prepared or even care to address the elephant in the room - Poverty, with all its concomitant factors and outcomes: lack of meaningful jobs and living wages, homelessness, mental health, education with prospects for a future, but no, instead there’s despair, hopelessness, anger, and lack of self esteem that is inevitable when locked into poverty. There seems to be a general attitude of, if they just pulled themselves up by the bootstraps and got on the straight and narrow everything would be hunky-dory! The laughter part is interesting to me, as someone who has suffered from (non-hyperactive) ADD as a kid. I think this gets misunderstood a bit. I want to share my perspective here. One thing that can happen for any child but it happens a lot easier tof ADD/ADHD kids is overstimulation. Overstimulation for ADD and AHDH kids can both manifest in hyperactivity. Hyperactivity can be accompanied by feelings of euphoria and, especially if there is also tension, laughter. I don't think you can read too much into the laughter part. Attention Deficit problems also tend to mellow out with age quite a lot. As a young teen I was medicated. As a young adult, I managed with moderate coffee intake alone. In middle age, I have removed even that. I think there is hope for rehabilitation with the right support but that requires a system which understands. I would like to think that might be the case.

The sentencing laws & ordinances need to be changed there. That way the judge can give harsher sentences. Those 2 should be in for life, no parole. Aurgh this is absolutely horrendous torture no excuse for it adhd doesn’t excuse this at all and in no way explains her behaviour perhaps alcohol use psychotic disorder would better explain it which can happen to anyone but individuals on the spectrum or that have add or adhd can be more susceptible to developing alcohol induced psychosis I am not sure why exactly Adhd can make people more likely to develop this but there are differences in the way adhd brains react to dopamine and seratonin which is why stimulants help adhd symptoms when they cause adhd symptoms in neurotypical brains alcohol can make people with adhd extremely hyperactive manic and psychotic. Of course anyone can develop alcohol use psychotic disorder but adhd does elevate the risk especially while unmedicated but medication for adhd can also put someone at higher risk of psychosis so there’s no clear answer here it appears that social services dropped the ball with this one
