Lincolnshire teen sweethearts Kim Edwards (14) and Lucas Markham (15) were convicted of the murder of Kim’s mother, Elizabeth (49) and younger sister, Katie (13) in April 2016. In a planned attack Markham had stabbed Elizabeth in the voice box while she slept, then smothered her, before doing the same to Kim’s sister.

Parental favouritism, resulting in resentment and bitterness from the non-favourite(s), is not the same as sibling rivalry. The latter puts responsibility for the situation on the children. The former puts responsibility on the parents.

I hate the excuses given by the professionals. I grown up in poverty, and not so good neighborhood. Prosperity causes a lot of the nasty behaviours in younger people as they have much more time sitting, doing nothing useful and thinking about stuff unconnected to survival, to community.Every bit of nasty behaviour is exacerbated by extreme unreasoning sympathy for the group of youngsters living their easiest life ever. In africa, young elephants caused havoc, killing rhino's until matriarch cows were brought in an disciplined them. We are animals.

I feel like the excuse for Kim’s childhood is not an excuse. She saw “as an infant” her father bearing her mother so it may have distorted her ideas and rationality of relationships? Yet, her and her boyfriend were loving and after the murders they bathed and sat down and watched the Twilight series together? Wouldn’t she have more issues with men than her mother. I understand being taken from her mother is traumatic and watching abuse growing up. Everyone’s brains work differently. 75% of people don’t use that as an excuse when the commit crimes. This is not a good enough reason to allow your boyfriend to murder your mother and sister.

This just made my skin crawl. When the two perps were talking about how and why they did it, I didn't see or hear a shred of remorse. It sounded like they were reading from a script. I feel so very sorry for the Mom's partner. He obviously loved Mom so very much. I had an abusive father that beat me and sexually abused me. I didn't ever think about killing him, just surviving until I was old enough to leave home for good. I guess in a way that Karma is real because he died of a heart attack at the age of 54.

My parents did something similar growing up. Did I ever think of killing them? Absolutely not. I rebelled like a normal child by throwing tantrums and complaining a lot and now that I’m older I realize that’s the best they knew. They changed with my younger siblings and learned from their mistakes. No one deserves to die for bad parenting, they could have ran away and disappeared.

My mother was alway verbally mean towards me. She was the only child, brought up in India. We lived in Burma, where she had nanny, kitchen staff and a gardener. My father lost his job so we returned to the UK. She alway blamed him for that and, as I resembled his family, treated me horribly verbally. I started earning my own money from the age of 15, left home aged 19 and paid my own way through physio school with a grant and what I earned as a temp sec. She was always mean and delighted in hurting me. When I introduced her to my German bf, she started telling him how horrible I was. He said: We all have good sides and bad sides - shut her up. I would never have considered killing her.

I know what you have experienced and never once would I have thought of killing my mother, she was so very vile, but I figured karma will come her way and I wouldn't have anything to do with it. Once you grow up you try your best to put this out of your mind, not really succeeding, but doing those things to make your life better after all when you grow up you are an adult and you are responsible for your own actions. You cannot take what happened to you and make it an excuse for what they did to define you. I really get quite offended when these so called psychologists assume that everyone who has a bad childhood would end up being a horrible adult. Good on you for living your life your way, with dignity. I don't take accept people in my life that are toxic, I just walk away and move on. Yes there are plenty out there that treat people so horribly and I am not one of them, and from what you have said neither of you, nor are many others, also none of us have to put up with it.

I’m always on the fence on these cases because of course an abusive, hellscape of a childhood has an effect on a child’s growing brain, but they certainly know right from wrong. I also think this is a case of the “perfect storm.” Some people wouldn’t have done whatever horrible thing if they hadn’t met the other person. We can’t expect kids raised in Dante’s Inferno to grow up to be normal, productive citizens. Our mental health and social services are atrocious. The foster care system is usually where kid’s hope and spirit go to die. She was referred for help, they said she was fine and sent her on her way.

I do know all humans are different some weaker minded than others idk. But i will say this... I whitnessed my father brutely beating my mother. My father was not someone to cross. I whitnessed other brutal behaviors he would unleash on others as well. I would never dream of murdering anyone for the reasons these kids gave. If her mother abused her continuously and this happend i suppose i could see it being more of self defense or simply just wanting to end the abuse once and for all. But to me this was done because these were bad seeds period. And now they blame their upbringing. Ppl have had way worse up bringings have become amazing productive citizens great parents and all around loving individuals

These children were not abused or neglected. Lucas had an aunt that took him in that certainly didn’t have to & tried to get him help to deal with the death of his mother! Kim used child services against her mother like a weapon & in turn caused her sister to suffer along with their mum just because her mother wouldn’t tolerate any disrespect from her! I doubt it if she loved Katy more, she just got along better with her! And a big reason for that is Kim herself! Point being these kids were unbelievably selfish, defiant, manipulative, & angry! Had they accepted some help instead of acting as sociopaths this tragedy wouldn’t have happened! Rest In Peace Katy 🧸 & Elizabeth 🌹

Both these children were abused, what do you call giving away one child's possession's to the other child? You have no idea of what went on in the house, the mother might not have been physically abusive, but she was mentally abusive. Lucas was brought up with an alcoholic father and neglected by him. Abuse is not just physical, mental abuse is just as bad. Both of these kids should have had mental health care to help them deal with their problems, instead of just being continually told off and punished. It was unfortunate that they found each other, each one on their own would have probably just descended into drugs and drink. There is no excuse for what they did, but their upbringings certainly give an explanation of what went wrong.

My honest opinion. Any child under the age of 16 should not by no means ever be giving a life sentences. I believe kids are irrational, they see the world so differently then adults. Kids still have alot of learning to do and can be saved. I feel like with the proper treatment, therapy, and the right amount of monitoring, kids can be saved. I wasnt no murderer of course, but i was by no means a good kid. Ive been sent away 2 times in my young teenage years. Spent 3 years in total in placement homes and went to jail for a year when i was 17. I used to fight all the time, do drugs, party, skip school, runaway, vandalize property, steal from stores, you name it i was doing it. After i was sent to county jail for a year at the age of 17 i turnt my whole life around. Its never to late for the ypunger generations to make a change, and start realizing the mistakes they made, and have regret. Sorry for the rant i just hate seeing little kids being charged the same as a full grown adult.

It is *often* the cause, it’s even proven that a kid or teen playing 20-30 minutes of a violent game, 61% of those kids their empathy has decreased, while kids who played regular games at least 80% had empathy and helped the person who was doing the test. same goes for traumas, violence, broken homes etc it can shape a child but it doesn’t always have to.
