When a company makes a move like that which is just splitting hairs in how they word things, then it's an indication of a lawsuit happening or is likely to happen and/or them appeasing governing regulators in some regions. There is no doubt in my mind that Microsoft really does NOT care about the e-waste or that they are forcing people to buy new hardware that they can't afford. This is just a "If you do this, this is how you can do it, but you're on your own from now on. I'm done with you." type of statement. There's no doubt that Microsoft has been taking a LOT of flak from the tech community over their nonsensical system requirements (and rightly so). However, they have noticed that there's a possibility of it biting later so they put that update out to be able to tell people, "I told you this was a bad idea, but you did it anyway. You're on your own." Now there's no case for any future lawsuits against them when things eventually break for people. This is NOT a win for the tech community in my mind. This is just another form of their hard line stance on the issue. The only way for there to be a win for the tech community is if Microsoft does one of three things: 1) Extend free updates and patching support for Windows 10 beyond the October 2025 deadline. 2) Lower the system requirements. 3) Release an edition of Windows 11 specifically for low powered/older PCs like a "lite edition" that is officially supported. Until Microsoft decides to do one of those three things, there is no "win" for the tech community over this issue. Acknowledging that people are doing to do what they want outside of what Microsoft prefers them to do is not really a win when it's really just, "You're on your own now." When things eventually break, and we all know this is a real possibility, now Microsoft is not on the hook for those breaks that they cause with their patches and updates for people on unsupported hardware.

On an unsupported system, simply not encrypting the system drive makes this requirement unnecessary during the installation and less critical to the user experience.

The reality is that most computing platforms have been "feature complete" for a decade or more. Windows 7, Office 97, probably are enough to satisfy 95% of users. iOS and Android have had almost everything needed since about 2015. There isn't really much to add for average users. Yes, power users may enjoy some of the new stuff, but they are edge cases for the most part.

They originally said you need secure boot and TPM 2.0. They realized that many older systems have both of these features but most likely disabled in Bios, so they add the processor requirement. Then they say TPM 2.0 is an absolute must, now they're allowing Windows 11 on unsupported hardware, although what's the point if you won't receive security updates. And the beat goes on, it seems. I migrated to Linux about 5 months ago and have had no problems worth mentioning. I sure hope Microsoft doesn't drop the processor requirement, I can imagine how pissed people who would be if they bought a new machine simply because of that one reason.

@@Mario583a Not exactly. Servers simply require different software _components._ For example, a server may have all the Apachee components necessary to serve up web pages, whereas a desktop system use won't need any of it. Conversely, various desktop components might be added (or patched in) whereas any server functions could care less. So, if you use a server OS for desktop use you may never get certain critical security updates. More likely, any updates will probably be delayed since Microsoft doesn't provide updates for their server OS's nearly as often as their desktop versions. In the meantime, your system could become compromised for no other reason that you just didn't get a necessary security patch or didn't get it in time.

But why would I want to do that? I have two Windows 10 machines. One is an old Dell XPS-18 All-in-1 used as a sheet music viewer. This system runs some proprietary software that does not install in Windows 11, but runs fine in Windows 10. The machine ran perfectly fine until Microsoft decided to make Windows 10 like Windows 11 by putting the AI junk into the OS. Now that machine runs like a$$ and is too slow to be useful. IMO, they did this to force people to upgrade to new hardware with Windows 11 and apparently that little scheme they had backfired. The other machine is an i7 Dell desktop used to run MIDI software and for music editing using Avid'd Sibelius. I had both running on an i9-12900K under Windows 11 and there were constant latency issues caused by Windows 11 constantly doing its crappy network stuff, cloud-checking, and everything else. When I swapped to the Windows 10 machine, all that went away and there is no longer the extra crap running in the background after I did some major cleanup that I couldn't do with Windows 11. When the security updates die on Windows 10, I'll continue to use these machines for their proprietary use. They're not used for day-to-day use such as gaming and internet browsing. There is one more annoyance, that's really worse than Windows 11. Microsoft's forced user to use the One Drive by moving all user-data folders on to the cloud. This should be an optional thing. When Microsoft did this to me, I received a message saying I didn't have enough space on my One Drive to fit my data and I could purchase more space! When I checked and saw they had copied up my documents and music folder, I went through a lengthy process of reversing this and disabling the One Drive, and actually deleting the applet from my system. With well over 5 TB of music files in the Music folder, and countless documents and virtual machines I keep in my Documents folder adding up to well north of 2 TB, this made for an unwanted situation. As a power user and retired IT support engineer, I am well aware of backups, data loss and the risks associated with that, and have adequate resources available for backups, and don't need to put everything in an unsecure location. Again, like Microsoft's scheme to strong-arm people into upgrading to Windows 11 by telling them their computers are too small, this too is yet another scheme to force people to spend money on additional space on their One Drive storage.

Microsofts business has dwindled, with the majority of its private users switching to tablets and cellphone OS's. This leaves Microsoft with its majority customers being Businesses, and Governments. In a recession, neither of these entities are likely to purchase new computer hardware. There in lies the problem. The only solution is to extend the use of W10 or allow users to run W11 on unsupported hardware. Microsoft is no longer the computer King it once was. That one is most likely on the driver manufacturer putting 23H2 as it's last supported Windows version. It'll still let you install, but Windows reads the inf file and sees that it is unsupported and so it installs its own generic driver in its place. You can disable this function with a registry entry.
@jiggybucksingtonАй бұрын
@ the problem arises when trying to use the amd Radeon app. Doesn’t match the driver so crashes. Using ddu in safe mode causes the error. A few times I was able to restore the backup it made but after a while it just gave up and my install was bricked. Made sure I setup windows without Ethernet until I installed the current driver. Now the older driver shows up under optional updates which is fine because the newer one is better optimized regardless of what windows update says. If I were to ever install the optional driver it will forever overwrite whatever I do after that no matter what steps I take to prevent it.

There’s not always a 10 day limit on rolling back. I had Windows 11 on my PC for many months and was continually having trouble with Realtek drivers. As the driver errors got worse, I eventually was offered an option to roll back to Windows 10. I did that and the driver issues went away, but this was much later than 10 days after installation.

my experience: I have a Dell Latitude E7470 i5 6th Gen (Pro license). I updated TPM form 1.2 to 2.0 from the Dell web site. I checked also for Secure Boot. And then with a normal Win 11 download, Win 11 Pro installed normally with no warning messages over Win 10. The monthly updates seem normal and the result is version 23H2 but so far no mention of 24H2.

Guess what. My unsupported WINDOWS 7 pc runs just fine. Putting up with the consistent reminders telling me I need to upgrade to windows 10 is a pain in the butt, but then so are most of microsoft's apps. They've been trying to scare us into upgrading since Windows XP, Win XP sp2, is still the best release they ever put out in my book. They could have upgraded the basic architecture to change the 4.0 memory limitation without rewriting the entire program. Why not? They wouldn't make the billions of dollars they would make just continuing their support. It's not about you, or me or our security. It's about money. Money, Money, MONEY!!! Period!

What's the point of forcefully installing win11 on unsupported hardware if they're not giving security updates ? Might as well stay on win 10 without security updates when support stops. EFF microsoft !

Isn’t TPM required for storing passkeys at the OS level? I know browsers and the password managers can do it at the app level.

I liked Linux philosophy a lot. Installation of programs when it exists is a very nice experience and the fact that you can move your HDD to another machine and work is great. The problem is that some programs are not working correctly, some wi-fi adapters don t work, time consuming trying to fix something since it is unfixable until you know is unfixable. Nobody tells you that will not work because users are fanatic. They advise you to try things over and over that will not work. I m 50-50. I ll keep using them on some machines I know some people are working hard so I can have a free os and I appreciate it. But reality is too harsh and I tried the most supported version of Linux. I can only imagine what other versions will be

If all you ever do is browse the Internet, write emails, and possibly use some office apps (word processor, spreadsheet, etc.) why use Windows _at all?!_ About the _only_ reason I can see to use Windows is with certain apps (namely, Adobe which should be avoided like death)! Microsoft clearly wants to move all it's offerings to a SaaS-type system where you (you cash cow) can _forever pay your digital master, Microsoft_ for everything you do. Throw in some copyright bastardization and all that spying, I'd say it's time to jump ship and _maybe_ use Windows in a VM for those occasions when you _must_ use it.

There's a free version of MS 365 which can be accessed through a browser on a Linux installation.

Also financial and tax filing apps like Quicken, TurboTax, etc which only have Windows and Mac versions, but no Linux. I know of no financial apps on Linux that can download transactions from a bank (except via browser and a file), and no tax apps on Linux that can e-Fiie (in the US at least), they require that you print and put your return in the snail mail.

@@allanrichardson1468 Taxact, everything is through your browser I've been using it for some 7 or 8 years. Why anyone wants to install a program to do taxes is beyond me. Also "HomeBank" is a cross platform free personal accounting program available in Linux. Took me about 2 seconds to find it.

Unsupported hardware is the reason I switched to Linux at the beginning of this year. My old i7700 cpu is not supported by W11 but it works totally fine. Gaming, video rendering and daily task ... I have no issues at all because my 4070Ti does most of the heavy lifting.

@IV.nl1l that is true. However, Windows 10 support will end on 10/14/2025. You can choose to have an unsupported 11 or 10 by that time

I read that you can install 11 on unsupported hardware-- but they will not give you auto updates, you will have to do it manually. smh.. So they are 'worried" about our security on old hardware so much that they refuse to give you access to auto updates? What are they smok^ng over there. This is embarrass^ngly stup^d. My PC has way better specs than the minimal requirements, I just don't have secure boot-- nor do I want it. So because of that, I can't have updates now? It's insane. I've already switched one laptop to Linux and I'll be jumping others over soon enough.. because this is beyond ^gnorant
