Holy cow, this video is 8 years old but this might be one of the clearest GE90 sound I've seen. Usually, when they go TO/GA, most people's camera mic would peaked and it'd just partially deafen the sound, making the sound very unclear. Only until they put in the climb power, that's when the sound is lowered enough for the camera mic to pick up properly and we can actually hear the sound clearly. But this video picked up the TO/GA sound beautifully. Very clear, from Take off to Climb.

@Jeff C No. It is *full power.* In fact, "full power" is a step below "full takeoff power" What you see in this video is that mighty engine pushed to it's absolute design limit for about a minute. It's ill advised to run any turbine engine at "MAX T/O" for more than 1-5 minutes depending on the manufacturer. And if you manage to get it to spin faster, it has to be overhauled. And i don't want to imagine how much a ge90 overhaul costs.
@davecrupel2817
@davecrupel2817 4 жыл бұрын
@Jeff C I'll elaborate. TL:DR the difference between max and max takeoff is the difference between a functioning engine and an exploding engine. Full contextual explanation below In the industry, "full power" is universally considered the highest setting you can run the engine at for an indefinite amount of time. Be it for high power cruising or running on 1 engine or whatever. Full takeoff power is designated for the highest power setting you can safely push the engine to without immediately tearing it apart from overpower. Engine manufacturers tend to seperate the allowed extra power settings by the amount of time you can safely sustain them. You can think of this like the speedometer on your car. 1-6000 rpm is an acceptable range. You can (theoretically) run your engine at any of those speeds indefinitely. "Max power" would be the same as the 6000 rpm. "Max takeoff power" is the red zone. You can get your engine up to those extreme RPMs for a very brief amount of time. The higher you go, the shorter amount of time. This may seem overly complicated. But its all made so for the pilots and for us maintenance guys. The pilots, with this knowledge, know the exact performance limits of their plane so they can effectively control it without risking it or any of it's occupants or cargo. I'll give you another set of categories to prove the insanity of it all. There's at least 6 different categories of airspeeds for an airplane. Stall speed empty, stall speed full, max maneuvering speed, max cruising speed, max speed, and overspeed. If it doesnt matter, why do the pilots bring down the ge90's power shortly after takeoff? Because if they kept it at that power setting, it would start to overheat and rip itself apart. And this is important for us in maintenance too. It helps us know what our airplane has been through, what it's been subjected to, and the appropriate kinds of work that may or may not be done on it. That's why there is a difference between "max power" and "max takeoff" Source: am aircraft mechanic. And if you ask any experienced pilot about this, they'll tell you the same thing. If they take their job seriously.

UAL917 I noticed that too. The older GE90s actually have straight fan blades and thinner nacelles, which let out a loud growl. The newer GE90s (such as the -115b) have curved fan blades as well as a thick nacelle, cancelling out 40-50 percent of the growl noise.

+MRPJC1994 British Airways videos I was puzzled at the time at to why ATC allowed Virgin to take off first. However reviewing the video it is apparent the BA 777 was holding because the cabin crew had not yet indicated to the flightdeck that the cabins were secured for takeoff. In fact you can hear one of the cabin crew taking to one of the passengers. Once the aircraft starts to move you hear the bings meaning the flight crew are committed to takeoff.

Hi - G-VIIP is a 777-236ER as per the opening screen. See: thebasource.com/aircraft/b777-200er/g-viip/ LGW to KIN is one of the longest routes flown from Gatwick - typically 10 hours or longer and there are 3 pilots along.

Completely sure. BA fly both GE and RR powered 777s out of Gatwick. The GE engine sounds completely different to the RR engine during the take-off roll - contract this video with my RR video at: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bmmpn2Vnqah0pqM The GE engines have a high pitched whine - the RRs are lower pitched and "gruntier". Others more knowledgeable than I in these matters have pointed out that the RR engines have a distinctive spool-up.

That having been said I prefer to offer viewers freedom of choice. You can watch the full push back , taxi and takeoff or watch only the takeoff if you prefer. There is a hotspot at 02:56 offering viewers the chance to skip ahead to takeoff if they wish - though this may not be available on a mobile device. Can't please everyone :)

Was the plane really shaking that hard during and after takeoff? At first, I thought it was a rough runway, but shaky video continues after liftoff. This makes it difficult to watch. Assuming you have no ailment such as Parkinson's, you should do better in making stable video. Here's a helpful tip: rest the corner of your phone on a finger, with that finger resting against the window (out of camera view obviously). As they used to say in photography class - "good content, but lousy execution and capture, the result of poor technique."
