Holy smokes! Did I just find the angriest, most violent sounding 777 takeoff on KZbin? Seemed like the takeoff started as close to the edge of runway as possible (far before the piano keys), gained far more speed than usual before rotating, and continually tried to calm down after getting airborne, only to spool back up again..... this truly was a max-power takeoff. Best on KZbin?

It them starting the 2nd engine. They have to get the fan blade up to a certain speed before it can be lit. aka engine #1 air pressure is used to start engine #2 so they need to push #1 up to give #2 enough air pressure to reach sufficient speed/pressure where it can start the engine and self sustain the engine.You will hear the same sort of behavior when they start the first engine it’s just much more subtle and may be from the back of the plane (if they are using an APU) or the side of the plane (if they are using a huffer) But the #2 startup is why suddenly during mid taxi a sound of heavy thrust. I thought it seemed like they are trying to get out of someones way or were told they need to stop lolly gagging, but in reality they are just starting the other engine. If you have a longer taxi it will be more noticable because they will use 1 engine until they are closer to the runway. The exception of being icey conditions where thrust from one side could push the plane sideways/ off the runway.

Certainly not a simple departure climb! I'm sure the pilot had to level off quite a few times and reduce thrust. Normally, the aircraft can climb at a constant power setting right up to cruise. Must be busy airspace in those parts.
@wizbang686 жыл бұрын
Climbing out of Jamaica I would say so. They have to hit a pretty steep climb and hit a assigned flight level before they get over cuba and then they have to deal with flights in and out of MIA/ FLL/ RSW/ TPA/ MCO. Each has substantial vollumes Miami and Orlando have 24x7 operations with scheduled arrivals and departures all hours.

Jim1971a I suppose he presumed from the full load and the sound of those engines?
@2pb7 жыл бұрын
Jim1971a - You are right - I don't know - only the Pilot would :) I assumed from the speed and sound of the engines and the full loading that it was - compared to previous flights on similar aircraft. But to be pedantic - the take-off may have been more powerful than normal but not necessarily "full throttle". I've amended the title
@2pb6 жыл бұрын
Just to draw a line under this one. I recently flew once more to Jamaica - similar situation - a Rolls Royce powered 777 (reg G-YMMD) completely full. During the flight I bumped into one of the first officers in the Galley and I asked him whether they needed to use full power on the takeoff. His reply was "No need - the Rolls Royce Trents are very powerful engines and Gatwick has a full length runway. We probably used around 3/4 power. We would probably only need a full throttle takeoff if fully loaded on a short runway." So it is fair to assume that the takeoff for my video was not full power. I've already removed the word "full" from my title.

Thanks for the comments. However if you lookup the reg number G-YMME, you will find that it is a Boeing 777-236. For example see the Air Accidents Investigation Branch report at www.gov.uk/aaib-reports/aar-2-2007-boeing-777-236-g-ymme-10-june-2004 You will see that G-YMME is a Boeing 777-236. If you download the full report the Aircraft information shows the number and type of engines as: "2 Rolls-Royce Trent 895-17 turbofan engines ". The AAIB certainly won't make a mistake on identifying the aircraft :)
