Beg to differ...1914 we were woefully ill prepared for the German advance into Belgium and got pushed back into a stalemate on the French border, which wouldve continued if the Americans hadn't joined the war and kept us supplied. 1940 we got spanked, due in part to inferior equipment. We wouldn't have won WW2 without the US (& Soviets to some extent). Britain did not win WW2 whether you like it or not...the allied forces did. The Falklands was an extremely close call, due to some very poor decisions made by senior officers with serious egos and I won't go into Iraq and Afghanistan (but we all remember the debacle of the SNATCH LRs and lack of helicopters. The troops/sailors and aircrew are nothing but professional and tough, absolutely no doubt, but you can't deny that successive governments have underfunded our military for decades.

The question I always have is what is plan B? Plan A of a small but well equipped army looks wise. Nobody can predict the future - hopefully it’s prescient. But - if the first 70K troops into a major conflict get all the fancy kit what do the next 100k get if the French are right and we need big numbers? I’m worried that those kids will be sent off with a Lee Enfield and a Fiat Panda.

No Plan B is to make new guns More or less with the money we saved by not investing in a bunch of guns we didn’t need cause the problem is If we buy the weapons to equip ram army of half a million And we don’t fight a war for twenty years We’ll have to fight with those weapons So we have enough for a smal military Whxib eill essentiallt just buy us time to train a new Armt But in the event of a major war dude we’ll just natjonalzir industry and turn out a dirty number of weapons

A big and bloated army isn't always the best especially in a modern war. Look at the gulf war or the Falklands, numbers don't necessarily win wars, the quality of your weapons do(although your ability to recreate them consistently is important as well). M1 Abrams were vastly outnumbered by Iraqi tanks yet US armour came out on top, leaving Iraqi forces vastly outgunned as they were losing tanks and the US wasn't. The Argentinian airforce held a numbers and had a home field advantage, yet they lost to the RAF because the RAF had the better aircraft that could outrange the Argentinian jets and take out several of them with ease, leading to British gradually gaining air superiority which made the possibility Argentina winning the war nigh impossible, leading to Argentine forces backing out. Point being, it's the quality of armies that will win wars, not necessarily how big they are. Countries maintaining well armed professional militaries works a lot better than building a big, but shabbily armed military that gets outgunned, by a more technologically advanced one.

About 17 years ago, I thought 'what if a soldier was wearing glasses that had augmented enemy positions, overlaid, their positions relayed by autonomous drones.' It isn't too unfeasible nowadays to create this sort of technology. The drone spots the enemy in cover, and your glasses then highlight that position for you in real time. Almost like a real life wall hack. You'd be looking through these glasses, and there would be a red dot where the enemy is, say in a window 60 feet away. Even more efficient if you have a swarm of autonomous drones flying around searching for potential threats with IR. Back then it seemed like something out of science fiction, nowadays, all the technology is there.

And for crying out loud, when are we going to get rid of the sand-collecting stoppage galore piece of junk SA80 and give the lads a decent weapon?
@skepticalbadger8 ай бұрын
The SA80 is fine and has been since 2001 (albeit in ideal terms it's too heavy and falls below modern ergonomic standards). The issue with it now is the massive cost of keeping it running, hence the programme to replace it has already started. As far high-tech stuff, none of this has yet been adopted, and there's no guarantee of any of it being adopted, as the video states.

I feel deeply concerned by this kind of training....IF I could believe that this was intended to be used on foreign soil it wouldn't bother me. BUT the Army spied on the public during lockdowns (allegedly) and with tyrannical politicians ignoring public concerns about foreigners flooding into this country, I have no doubt that the Army would be used against us. Some soldiers would probably refuse to attack their own people but we all know what has been happening at a lower level with migrants/refugees etc being used as 'security' guards.
