Featuring the largest cannon ever intended for an anti-tank role and an equally massive turret, the FV4005 is an oddity. Today we look at the origin of this design and what's left of it today.

I agree the warhead itself is the weight of a man iirc or was it at least 40kgs projectile mass. That's not counting the mass of the propellant charge after loading the shell because of how much explosive you need to back it up with to launch that thing at that velocity due to its mass

To be fair, they were putting a 183-mm cannon, which would have fit well on a FRIGATE, on a Centurion chassis. Considering how far back this contraption could shoot from, being eleven feet tall isn't that big an issue. And who sez the rounds had to HIT their target! I'll bet if they detonated within 10 yards, they'd upend even those Soviet JS beasts!

In this context "quick-firing" refers to a gun that is both breech-loading and that encases the propellant charge in a metal case. The term came about in the 1880s when those features on naval guns were rare and there's never been a reason to get rid of the term.

Britain only built 3 18 inch naval guns which ended up on monitors to bombarded land targets (they never saw combat with HMS Furious) as well as 5 18-inch railway guns (Howitzers) and the Americans only ever built 2 18 inch naval guns as protoypes before dismissing them for being both unreliable and expensive to maintain; US tests estimated a lifetime of 45 shots for their 18 incher, which is a real flaw when you have to train to your crew or bring your flagship ship back after every skirmish because it needs it's main guns replaced. 16inch guns were superior, which is why everyone who could afford them used them (not counting Japan catching 'Maus' fever from the Nazis).

@@Neion8 thank you for your reply, I know the guns had a limited life, it was a problem for all the. Siege guns, some even had numbered shells to account for bore wear, with 45 shots what shots they would have been. With modern metallurgical developments we could probably overcomes the problems, but with missiles we unfortunately don't need to, battleships mounting twenty four or thirty inch guns would be awesome and terrifying at the same time, and with automation you could reduce the crew to a few dozens. What's amazing is with all the crappy designs they went through, and had to greatly supplement their tank park with the American-built M4 Shermans, that type being the most common British AFV of WWII, and right at the end they come up with the excellent Comet and just as the war is wrapping up, the CENTURION. I'd like to see a WoT hypothetical matchup between the Centurion, with either the 17-pounder or the 20-pounder tank guns, going up against "Panzerwaffe 46".

What I like the most about IS-3 debuting on Victory Parade in Berlin is that T-44 wasn't shown. And later on, reworked, upgunned and uparmored it turned into T-54 aka main force behind soviet ground forces armored fist. So it ended up being an unintentional misdirection on soviet part. Otherwise Allies/NATO might have instead pursued the upgunned medium tank projects that would see medium tanks comparable to T-54 being the main focus of development efforts. Uparmored Centurion with 32-pounder and Caernavorn drive train? M26E1 with streamlined hull front, long 90mm and T32 drive train? Basically do what soviets did to T-44 to get T-54 instead of waiting for M48.

Thanks, really interesting video. As for the design of the tank, I think it was an awful design that should have never got past the drawing stage.

Except the fact that Sprocket, a game with a single person developing it, has better traction physics when it comes to trenches and suspension in general.

@@ancientwarrior3482 That War Thunder example is a server issue, not a physics issue. The physics engine can't keep up with where the tank is sometimes

@@StalledAgate832 Yes, Sprocket, the game where literally every single tank compresses its own road wheels so bad it can barely move, because the only suspension it has is butter

Hi! Awesome update at the end of the year of our Lord 2023: WoT and TTM partnered with legendary KZbinr (oh, and tank restorer) Mr. Hewes to remount the turret on the correct chassis and have it running for Tankfest 2024!
