Beesleys this list doesn't even scratch the surface. For example I have 3 books filled with hundreds of the most scenic drives in the U.S. He gave you 1. There is so much here. It really is true that we have a young history, but a RICH history! So much has happened here it's impossible to cover it all.

Mark Twain was the pen name of Samuel Clemens who wrote Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn. He was also a humorist. (1835-1910) In the late 1890s, he spoke to the Savage Club in London and was elected an honorary member. He was told that only three men had been so honored, including the Prince of Wales, and he replied: "Well, it must make the Prince feel mighty fine."

I actually wonder if they teach Mark Twain in British schools (I have my doubts). The name was certainly not ringing a bell for the Beasleys. Of course, if they don't teach Mark Twain, there is probably not a lot of American literature that they do teach.

@@johnalden5821 There are many great examples of American personalities, but Samuel Clemens (Mark Twain) is one of the most quintessentially American among the lot. From being a Mississippi riverboat pilot, to defecting from the Confederacy during the Civil war; from silver mine prospecting in Nevada, to world travel correspondent; friend of scientist Nikola Tesla and scourge of Christian Scientist Mary Baker Eddy; keen author, humorist and humanist, he led a most interesting life.

I agree with the Beasleys. Not many of these places are somewhere you would go to just see that place. I mean I can't see spending more than an hour or two at many of them. If your going to say something like Mark Twains' house, why not Teddy Roosevelt's house here on Long Island? Or Walt Whitmans house. You can spend 2-3 hours there but then it's on Long Island. So there is plenty of other things to do besides the house. I bet there are plenty of other places, just like Twain's house that have more to offer than just a house to see.

Regarding passports. Another reason a lot of Americans don't have passports is because until 9/11 a passport wasn't required to go to Mexico, Canada and some islands. So they've only been required since several years after 9/11. Another reason is pretty far and therefore rather expensive to get to countries in Europe/Asia/South America. I've had a passport since 1983.

There is so much to see and do in Oregon. The 101 on the coast, the coastal rainforests (lots of waterfalls), the gorge, the high desert (you can pick sunstone gems up off the ground at the free public sunstone spot), Crater Lake, and Eugene. I live on the Highway between Florence on the coast, and Eugene in Mapleton. Mapleton is known for Sweet Creek Falls which is pretty.

I felt he had too much of an East Coast bias, and threw a few touristy things from the heart land in there. Skipped most of the rockies and then added a bunch of west coast. While visiting the childhood home of Mark Twain and Louisa Alcott might be of interest to maybe 1% of people watching, He left out places like Zion, Bryce, the Bonneville Salt flats, Grand Tetons, Tombstone, Sedona, Roswell... SO many places in the rockies & Southwest that should have been included rather than a rebuilt (not even original) cabin in the backwoods of Kentucky. The way the list was going I expected him to put 'the biggest ball of yarn;' or 'the 50 ft tall rocking chair' as must sees.

I have been to at least half these places. My favorite places to visit are Charleston, South Carolina - the entire historic district is like stepping back into the antebellum days, Memphis, Tennessee - because I LOVE blues music, Mammoth Cave, Kentucky - the world's largest cave system, & Hearst Castle in California. I believe none of those were on this list. You are right about most Americans preferring to travel within their own country. If you want to visit California I would advise you to set aside 2 weeks at the least because it is huge and there are about 450 miles between LA & San Fran with loads of stuff to see in between such as Hearst Castle. Have Fun!!

Another reason many Americans don't have passports is because a lot of workplaces here don't give their employees enough vacation time compared to many other countries. If you're lucky, you might get two weeks off for the entire year and many companies won't even give that. If Americans want to travel we usually have to make it quick and it's easier to stay within the country. My husband's company, for example, uses some of that time if he becomes ill and has to miss work. We're taking one week to visit my parents in another state because that's all he has after having a cold earlier in the year.

You can drive to Alaska on the Al Can highway, or you can take a ferry from Washington state. The planes that fly into Anchorage from all over the globe are not little planes. We had the largest plane in the world, the Antonov, land here during the pandemic. That same plane was destroyed by Russian troops last year in Ukraine. Anchorage is the third largest cargo airport in the US and handles massive planes all the time in any weather. Small planes such as float planes and ski planes are used for excursions to villages and off the road system places but cities in Alaska where most tourists visit have regular airports.

Best way to do Route 66 is to go EAST to WEST in a comfortable large car (there is a reason why those classic Cadillacs are so big). Go with a minimal planning and be open to seeing silly, crazy, insane things like largest buffalo or a weird bug museums, or VWs stuck in the desert, or whatever the billboards are advertising, just go and see and don't try to make sense of it all. At the end of the EAST to WEST journey, you get to see the Pacific Ocean and explore Venice Beach and other LA places. You can then drive up to Anaheim and go to Disneyland or go to San Francisco. Route 66 EAST to WEST has a way better finish line and the roadside attractions get crazier the farther west you go so the build up is a lot more exciting.

I hiked Diamond Head when I was in Hawaii. There were definitely a good amount of people, there are sections of super narrow stairways that you have to go up single file. Other than that it was pretty great, was only about 15 people at the top so there was plenty of room for pictures. Great views, nice breeze.

I dispute that the Portland headlight is the most iconic lighthouse in America. The Cape Hatteras lighthouse is much more iconic, and it's also one of the tallest lighthouses in the world. NC has a bunch of distinctive lighthouses, all of which are more interesting than that plain white monolith he chose.

When you come, you must see Philadelphia and it’s iconic City Hall. A few blocks up the street is where the Declaration of Independence and Constitution were written. Also, go walk the Parkway. He is right that Philly is more a European city really. It’s a major city with a hometown feel. I should know, it’s my hometown.

You are right the second half wasn't as compelling. My total count out of the 100 is 46. FYI, Rt66 doesn't take as long going back because on the way you are stopping at roadside attractions. On your way home you are just driving back directly without stopping.

I've been to a total of 61 out of the 100, but I've spent 8 years of my life living in a van, driving all over the country. I also probably travel more than average, even when I'm not living on the road. I could never narrow it down to a single favorite, but my top 10 would probably all be national parks, and Highway 101. If you want to see Alaska, I'd recommend taking an Alaskan cruise out of Seattle. Some cruise packages include a side trip by train into the interior of Alaska. It's a LONG drive from the continental US, over pretty questionable roads.

I can guarantee you that every one here in the states can give another list of 100 places to see that weren't on this list, there are just places and history everywhere. I am in sw Ohio, 15 minutes from Kings Island which gives Cedar Point a run for best coaster parks, in Dayton you get the full history of the Wright Bros and the first flight since this is where the lived, owned a bike shop, where the plane was built. Cincinnati has the first fire station in the US, in 1869, the Cincinnati Reds were the very first pro baseball team, Cincinnati also has rich history of the Underground Railroad helping those enslaved reach freedom and then the Ohio River itself. Also the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame is incredible, not a bad Elvis impersonator as this guy showed, he obviously isn't a music fan. My uncle lives on a mountain which the Blue Ridge parkway winds through, the Blue Ridge mntns are incredible. He left out Sprindfield, Ill where Lincoln lived, had his law office and where he is buried. Much disrespect shown for not including the memorials of Washington DC, the war memorials, Arlington National Cemetery. I'm 54 and I'm still a kid every time when at Magic Kingdom at Disney World in Orlando or to Disneyland in California. My point in this is that no matter where you go here, don't worry, just ask locals or google where you are, there is history and awesome places to see everywhere. Just relax and have a great time.

I went to Alcatraz about 30 years ago and got to hear a former inmate give a talk and he described in graphic detail a stabbing of an inmate. Coolest tour ever. Also, going on a tour to Angel island is a must. Got to play baseball on the old baseball field by the barracks.

As with Part 1, I've been to 14 of these (28 total of the full 100 listed). Hoover Dam, Wrigley Field, American Museum of Natural History, Alcatraz, Yosemite, Las Vegas, Columbia River Gorge, Highway 101 (and California Route 1 along the coast is another amazing drive, and kind of ties in to 101 at it's north and south ends), Arches National Park (all the "Redrock parks" in that part of the country are amazing), Grand Central in NYC, South Beach, Times Square, Death Valley, Route 66 (parts of it, anyway... someday I'd love to plan a run from Chicago to LA with an old buddy who now lives in Texas who I've done several extended road trips with)

I would add one he missed. AMARG. "The 309th AMARG takes care of nearly 4,000 aircraft, which makes it the largest aircraft storage and preservation facility in the world." 4000 aircraft in the desert, and you can take a tram ride through it.

some more michigan suggestions: The Detroit Institute of Arts, Detroit- art museum full of history from many different cultures, stunning architecture, good cafe as well Henry Ford Museum, Dearborn- very cool if you're interested in history, especially auto/industrial development. Holland- just a really cool, really dutch city. a neat example of immigrants maintaining their homeland culture throughout the generations. watch out for the metric fuckton of tulips if you have allergies. Marvin's Marvelous Mechanical Museum, Farmington Hills- exactly what it says on the tin. lots of doodads and thingamajigs. bonus cool points if you're a tally hall fan. Cherry Festival, Traverse City- cherry pies. cherry sundaes. cherry jelly. cherry jam. cherry scones. cherry cake. cherry art. cherry clothing. cherry music. cherry bobbing competitions. cherry pie races. cherry heart. cherry soul. all on in a really nice coastal resort town with a neat museum and theater. Sault Ste Marie- oldest city in Michigan. old cathedral, old play theater, tower of history, shipwreck museum on an actual ship (though not quite as comprehensive as the one in Paradise).
