When the few 'Bismarck' survivors were in the water awaiting rescue, a seaman on one of the British ships jumped in to try and save a badly-injured (no arms) German sailor. Because of the bitterness over the loss of the inadequately-armoured "Hood" and all but 3 of its crew, the sailor's good deed was rewarded with his being charged with "deserting his ship in the face of the enemy " The rescue was proceeding when someone claimed to have seen a periscope, giving the British an excuse to clear off and leave those men still in the water to drown or to die of exposure.

How many German ships rescued British sailors? The report of U boats in the vicinity was not "an excuse" to leave. I suppose you would have sat around waiting to be torpedoed?

Most ships have cats onboard, both as pets and for their vermin control abilities.

Looks like unsinkable Sam cat from the Bismarck rescued by HMS Cossack, whe she sunk cat when to HMS Ark Royal and when that sunk the cat was rescued again. Three ship sunk, so lucky for cat but unluckly for ships. Ended up in a Sailors home in Belfast

If you want to be horrified, read the accounts of the survivors of the Bismarck sinking. Nothing glorious or heroic about it.

Many were left to drown.

@@None-zc5vg Being left to drown or freeze was literally the most likely fate for all the thousands and thousands of sailors sunk by U-Boats and German raiders in the Battle of Atlantic...it was the arguably the cruellest theatre of warfare. The sinking of Bismark probably stands out for the fact that so many were rescued...and let's not forget that she was a raider.

@@angloirishcad It appears (just that) that there were survivors within reach of the British ships who COULD have been picked up but who were instead left in the water quite wilfully.
@angloirishcad

@@None-zc5vg Happened all the time in that sphere of warfare...in fact often combatants wouldn't even pick up their own sailors due to the risk of torpedoes...if submarines were suspected to be present, no ship could be stationary...and they would usually freeze to death of or die from exposure.

It was scuttled by the crew as mentioned by one of the survivors Heinz Stieg.

If any scuttling actually took place then it took place AFTER Bismarck had been converted into a 51000 ton mountain of sinking, flaming scrap metal. All guns silenced, her superstructure devastated, her main armour belt broken and penetrated in several places, her command staff physically obliterated, internally aflame from end to end, her stern and port gunwales already underwater, a thousand of her crew dead, and further hundreds of her crew already in the water behind her.... All that any scuttling did was to sink her a few minutes earlier than was already happening. In the world of boxing the crew's scuttling efforts are what is known as "throwing in the towel", submission of a boxer AFTER he has been punched senseless by a more skillful & powerful opponent, and only a deluded child would say, "the victor didn't win because his opponent killed himself before he lost.", when the truth is the loser had his arse ripped off by the victor and handed back to him on a plate. Imagine the ignominy of being forced to commit suicide by your opponent?
