Long ago I used to work at Dunkin’ Donuts. I made the cookies, croissants, muffins, everything except the donuts. At the time they would let the employees eat anything they wanted and take home as many donuts as we wanted at the end of the day. They were just going to be thrown them away so it was a win win for everyone. I became very good telling how old the donuts were by taste, texture, and appearance. I was there for a few years until I moved to an area that didn’t have any Dunkin locations. A few decades passed, and when I was traveling at one point I was driving through my old town and decided to stop and get some donuts and coffee for old times sake. I took one bite and threw out the rest of the donuts I bought. When I was there we never had the food on the shelves long enough for the donuts to get that stale. I was saddened and disappointed that things had got that bad there. The coffee was good, so at least there was that.

Dunkin used to be just as good, until they changed from freshly made donuts in store to the mass truck delivered stuff we have today. If you go inside when they're running the glazed donuts they'll give you a free sample donut, right off the line, still hot. They're so light and fluffy that you'll swear a little piece of manna fell from Heaven and ended up in your mouth. The word "donut" doesn't even seem to apply because they're in their own league, peerless. Get a dozen glazed in addition to the variety dozen or you'll regret it.

Dunkin used to fry the donuts in-store but they switched to a model where the donuts are baked in a localized factory. I still think they're pretty good, but not as a good as they used to be. You definitely get the oldest and the worst if you ask for an assortment. That's always been the case. You get the stuff they can't sell, especially the maple. If you want their best, I'd say the chocolate cream, which used to be a buttercream filling but now it's a bit like a ganache. The Boston cream, the jelly, and the chocolate frosted are also pretty good.

Duncan Donuts back in the day were fantastic. But as they grew over the years they changed something. I'm not sure what but the quality suffered and now they are just okay. Crispy cream is a much better choice. Although some non-chain, individual bakeries do make some quite impressive donuts. I grew up in Austin Texas during the sixties, seventies and eighties. And there was a family owned bakery that specialized in donuts called Ms. Johnson's Bakery. They posted the times that they put out freshly made donuts and so you could arrive just in time to get fresh hot donuts that would absolutely just melt in your mouth. I always had to buy two dozen of the hot glazed donuts when I went to get some for the family. Because I'd eat half a dozen on my way home. It was incredible. The best donuts ever! But they eventually sold the bakery and it was never the same after the Johnson family left.

I live in Florida and Dunkin has pretty much a lock on the donut market here and they're pretty terrible. There are a few independents, but they are usually fancy or "craft" donut places. It's hard to find a good old fashioned family run donut shop that makes regular, traditional donuts from scratch. Dunkin (at least in this area) has a central bakery and they bring them into the various stores each morning. Mass produced - you might as well buy packaged donuts from a supermarket.

The box has chocolate glazed, jam filled, some sort of spiced one, cinnamon sugar covered, and one with powdered sugar...but that may be the chocolate one...I don't remember though since I didn't get any this last winter. I don't have one near me either, so it's rare for me to be around one when they have the flavors I like. I don't like the donuts, but the munchkins (donut holes) are really good. I don't like krispy cream, I'm a Shipley's girl. I prefer the way Shipley's icing is done...its nice and flaky and not crispy. But Dunkin does have a delicious frozen hot chocolate, and they have a croissant bacon egg and cheese breakfast sandwich that is pretty tasty too.

A Dunkin’ Donut opened across the street from a local donut shop in my city. They lasted about four months before closing.

When they first came on the scene, the donuts tasted better. The cinnamon twists were great with hot chocolate.

A few years ago, Dunkin started to put less toping on. I used to get a Chocolate topped regular donut all the time getting chocolate in every byte and then one day there was and I got only donut in a few bytes. Less. Oh and they no longer serve them without sprinkles, I do not like sprinkles! As a kid as mentioned they made them in house and toppings were dipped so it covered ½ the donut! I miss Krispy Kream’s, can’t get them in Central New York.

IMO, I only like the Apple Fritter and the Old Fashioned donut with their coffee at Dunkin. Dunkin donuts aren’t as sweet as other donut places so people that don’t like a very sweet taste tend to prefer Dunkin over Krispy Kreme. I’m of the opinion that if going to one of these chain donut places then you have to go to Krispy Kreme when their Hot sign is turned on so you get fresh donuts straight out of the glaze shower. I grew up near a Krispy Kreme factory store where you could watch the donuts be created by their giant donut machine. When I say eat them fresh, it is best to just have them in the store, in the parking lot or (if you are skilled enough) in the car on the drive home. 😂. If a cop pulls you over, just offer a donut and you may get out of the ticket. 😊

I only like Krispy Kreme when they’re hot.

I remember when Dunkin Donuts had a plain donut with a small donut handle. You would hold the handle so you dunk your donut in the hot coffee.

As a person in the Boston area, which is the land of Dunkin Donuts.... I agree, their donuts are lacking. However, I do tend to get their iced lattes and a breakfast sandwich over their donuts. Also on a side note, Dunkin Donuts is also in the UK and they have items over there that we do not have here in the US. Edit: Yea, I definitely have to add this as you said to comment about it. Yes, Dunkin Donuts is a hit or miss depending on the shop and franchise owner. Also, little known, is that it is based on region as well, where the quality of Dunkin Donuts is different in say Boston than it is in say, Miami.... It also helps that the Boston area has it's own lingo that the rest of the country/world of Dunkin...

Being from North Carolina, there is no comparison when it comes to Krispy Kreme and Dunkin. Krispy Kreme is the best, especially if you hit them when the hot and ready sign is lit up.

My favorite was Winchell’s back in the day. What happened to them? No longer in KC.☹️

Dunkin Donuts used to make the donuts in house. Now they're made at some regional facility and trucked in. They're just not the same.

I used to drive home past a Dunkin' Donuts early in the morning, and slow down with the window opened at least a little bit to absorb the smell of the fresh crop cooking. Then, subtly, I noticed that I wasn't smelling anything anymore when I drove by. Although it's still the shortest route, it's also the route with the most traffic, so for many years now without the Dunkin' incentive I have usually just taken an alternate, less stressful way home, and I can smell just as many fresh "donuts" -- which is ZERO. Fer cryin' out loud, their basic "dunkers" don't even have a HANDLE on them anymore!

I have a nice little DD in my village and they always taste great except rarely do they have my fave which is the DUTCH APPLE FILLED DONUT!!! I made a minor complaint, begged is more like it and the owner, an Indian immigrant/surprise surprise/ now saves at least 1 or 2 for me whenever they make them... gotta love that kind of care and service! BTW, The coffee ain't bad either.

if you ever go back to Dunkin’ Donuts, try the munchkins. There are the little donut holes, and in my opinion, the jelly and glazed are the best ones.

Dunkin is good in a pinch they are literally on every corner in Boston and all over in generalnin New England. I like their Boston Creme and their Apple fritters and Jelly filled donuts. They also have something called a coffee roll which is kind of like a cinnamon roll donut that is good. My absolute favorite donuts are from a local bakery so that's where I go most of the time. I prefer Dunkin coffee to Starbucks though.

Dunkin is my favorite of the chain donuts, you have to remember that you can't compare mom and pop businesses to chain restaurants, lol. Boston cream is my fav

I used to like going there and watching them actually making and filling the donuts through a window next to the counter. They stopped making them in-store a long time ago and our local one has since moved to a strip mall. I haven't been there since.
