When a guy who has been dead for longer than he was alive but still drive women wild... I don't think there's a word for it except Elvis. The voice is so unique and powerful that it's a marvel on its own but putting it with his looks and charisma was God showing off when he made this man. Elvis was the birth of fangirls.

The drummer was hired for being able to not only be a world class drummer, but to improvise just by watching Elvis. Ronny Tutt. He was the last to audition before his come back. The guy that auditioned before him used his drums and initially got the gig. He talked them into letting him go ahead and play since his drums were already set up. He was so good and his chemistry with Elvis took off from there. Anytime you see Elvis moving with the drums like that, in any song, it's the two of them working together to make the magic happen.

Tony Joe White, who wrote this song, is another Southern rock and roll singer with a similar voice to Elvis. but the epitome of a rocker is Elvis. When I was young Elvis was buried in his (mostly) dire movies and crooning. This 70s comeback was more to my taste, and showcased his power. In 89-90 I spent some time in the South, Virginia and North Carolina, and got a real feel for what this stuff means.

When God created my friend Elvis he was just showing off. I can't tell you how much i love and miss him, there is not a day that goes by that i don't think of him and all the memories we made in 10 short years, his death knocked the wind out of me i have never been the same since, Elvis was the big brother i never had. He is also my guardian angel. Graceland is my go to place when it get's to hard to live w/o my friend i go there and walk around and remember Elvis and all the beautiful times we had together. He was the only person in my life that understood me and cared about my feelings and opinions. What it comes down to is we both needed a true friend and we were that for each other. Awesome reaction. God bless you and your family from the one and only Memphis Tn. Fun fact he loved to make funny noises with the microphone there was NOTHING!!!!! sexual about what he did with the Microphone. My nickname for him was Sexy Jello we laughed about that all the time he thought it was hilarious.

Just to add to that nice comment you made, Elvis is voice, and feeling for music came from even deep in his bones, his left leg was almost always moving. He felt the music because music was him. It’s fun watching younger generations discover Elvis and reacting the same way we did when he was alive. He was a cultural phenomenon and an American icon. Elvis truly is a rabbit hole worth going down and the further you go, the more you will respect/love him and realize he was a lot deeper than most entertainers. You are right about the song being about Civil Rights. Heartbroken about the news of Martin Luther King’s assassination Elvis sat down with songwriter Walter Earl Brown to come up with “If I Can Dream”. The 68 Comeback Special was supposed to be a Christmas Special and end with a Christmas song for America to hear. However Elvis put it all on the line, holding nothing back and standing up for his convictions chose to perform this song as his finale despite those around him advising him not to. Please watch “In the Ghetto” 1970 Las Vegas and note the crowd he is performing in front of. Also watch “Love Me Tender” 1970 concert. What he does will absolutely shock you and possibly make you jealous you weren’t there. Great reaction!

As I was walking in an aisle, I looked to my left and saw an Elvis picture. Maybe a calendar or 16"18" poster. It was a closeup, from chest up, dressed in black. I moved to the picture, the man at the desk made room for me so I could get closer for viewing. About 20 seconds later I said "Raw Sex". I turned and walked away. Then I thought, I could not believe I said that out loud. 🥰 from Kentucky

Yes chain gang were prisoners usually working on the road sides cleaning trash or repairing roads etc. they had chains on so they could not escape easily. Also, Elvis sometimes would have pieces of papers that had the words to a song. I think he was refreshing his mind to the second stanza of Polk Salad Annie. Elvis also as most everyone knows, grew up very poor and was influenced by the jazz, rhythm and blues and Gospel music of the the Black community. He was one of a kind for sure. I was fortunate to have been born in the same time period when he was just starting his career and with all the other greats of the 1950-60’s. The Righteous Brothers, the Everly Brothers, Tom Jones, all the hip hop and doo whop music, Motown etc. the greatest time to be a teenager.

I have enjoyed watching your reactions to Elvis. I have been a fan of Elvis since I was around 9 or 10. I am now 69 and continue to react th him. He is absolutely unbelievable. I don't think there is anyone that can compare to him. To me, you have to listen and watch to really understand the depth, sincerity, voice and everything about him.

I grew up in New Albany, Mississippi, which is about 20 miles from Tupelo, Mississippi, where he grew up! Polk Salad is like wild turnip greens! You can find it in the woods.

A lot of people don't know, but Elvis was a martial artist and a black belt. The moves on stage are martial arts and the sash he wears is a martial arts belt

Whitney Houston’s mother, Cissy sang for awhile with his back up group, the Sweet Inspirations. In an Oprah interview, Whitney said she met Elvis when she went with her mom to rehearsal. Oprah asked, “did you talk to him.” Whitney gave her a look & said “NO, it was ELVIS”.

You're fun to watch (and saying that as a really great thing), especially b/c you 'get' Elvis right away & his sense of humor, sexuality and total command of the stage. As at this point, in 1970, he knew totally how to get the crowd in the palm of his hands. The cool part, too, is you haven't even gotten to where he really shows how powerful voice is or how he could use it like no other. At least in my view. And people try to knock Elvis for not writing his own songs, but in that era there was a distinction between singers and songwriters for a lot of people, though not at all, while Elvis had no need to write songs anyway as his way of taking a song and rearranging and producing it with new phrasing made an old song come to new life. So, for example, I would listen to the great Simon and Garfunkle hit, Bridge Over Troubled Water, and then listen to Elvis' treatment of it during the same period as he is doing these shows right here. In fact, it's kind of funny, but after Elvis did his different version, Simon turned to Garfunkel and said something to the effect of "We're F'd; what are we gonna do now?" lol While I hope I don't bore you with the extra details as I only know this stuff because I'm a professional writer and even though decade and decades younger, like you, I still got hired to write about Elvis and ended up pretty much speaking to anyone who was ever close to him. It's fun, too, because I always like to see you smiling and laughing and making faces, etc., as it makes your reactions much more than the usual thing one might see on KZbin.

Glad you are amazed by Elvis. I think he always gets new fans. This concert was included in the 1970 documentary called Elvis, That’s the way it is. This is my favorite. So many of those songs are awesome. His female group were the Inspirations. One of the women was Whitney Houston’s Mother. Elvis got a lot of his Dance moves from Karate.

Lawrence Welk a friend of Elvis (even before Elvis became famous, Welk always searched for the new music and stars back in those days) donated a costume to Elvis when he started his first tour, and taught Elvis how to dress like a star on stage and off stage and introduced Elvis to his designer. The costume designer William Lewis Belew was a designer to the stars, and did most if not all of Elvis's costumes.
