I will simplify the title of the song for you... The moment Ray's father married Ray's step daughter, Ray's wife became Ray's Grandmother, and as his Grandmother's husband, Ray became his own Grandpa... The kids are just icing on a complicated cake...
@michaeltabor41762 ай бұрын
Exactly. As his father's father-in-law, he becomes his own grandfather
@erikwalker944518 күн бұрын
Yep. The the kids are added to make the song rhyme and to add to the verse. Ray married the mother of his stepmother.

This is originally a song from 1947 performed by a duo called Lonzo and Oscar that Ray covered. Ray has a lot of old novelty songs covered in his "Encyclopedia of Recorded Comedy Music", a 9 cd box set including music by himself and others. Since Christmas is approaching, start adding Ray to your Christmas play list. He has both comedy and serious songs to make you smile.

Love this one. It goes way back in time and is an old-fashioned hillybilly song. I first heard on the radio being played on the Grand Ole Opry. Later I heard it by Grandpa Jones and there is no telling where he got it. Thank you for the reaction.

I’m into genealogy and yes it does get very confusing. There are graphs all over the genealogical sites that help you figure out this exact thing. A lot of people don’t understand the once removed aspect of it. For example, my mom’s sisters children are my first cousins. The first cousins children are my first cousins once removed as they are a generation away from me. Yes us researchers print and keep the graphs handy for sure! LOL

To simplify, true story, my friend Rob's parents divorced. His mother then married his father's brother, who was also divorced. His uncle became his stepfather, his cousins became his brother and sisters. His father remarried a woman with two daughters. His brother/cousin married one of those daughters - no blood relation, it is legal, just very confusing and a little weird since legally they are step cousins. We often joke that Rob should get divorced and marry the other daughter just to complete the cycle of non-incestous oddity. It just goes to show that divorce is hard on the kids' futures.

I have a pair of cousins that are half-sisters and aunt and niece to each other born about a month apart... my grand father's last wife (3rd legal wife, 13th marriage, and the 11th to "marry" him) had been my uncle's widow... so... this song is relatable to the tumbleweed that is my family tree too

"somewhere in America this is true" 😂😂 You have no idea how close you are with regard to one of my family lines, where nephews and nieces of my direct ancestor are also his younger half-siblings because his oldest half sister (from the mom's first marriage) married his father after the mother's death and they had several kids (not incest -- she was the guy's stepdaughter, no shared blood with each other). Way back in the 19th century. That was a trip to learn about and try to decipher their relationships...lol.

That song has been around a long time, the first one I know of that did it was Lonzo and Oscar, a country comedy team, from way back on the Opry. There was a man however that made a deal with a couple, that when their child was born, if it was a girl, he would help with the raising of her, and when she became of age, they would marry. She turned 21 in 1921. 17 February 1922. They remained married with 5 children, until Grandpa was arrested and sent to the pen, for steeling a ham.

So true story...I have a friend who was married and had two sons. She divorced her husband and then when the oldest song finished high school, he enrolled in the Army. He was then stationed in the Philippines for several years and met a young woman there and married her. His father went to visit him and stayed for quite a while and ended up marrying his daughter-in-law's sister. So, they are in fact father/son and brothers-in-law. Such a crazy family situation!

To understand cousins: Children of siblings are 1st cousins. Grandchildren of siblings are 2nd cousins. Great-grandchildren of siblings are 3rd cousins, etc. Children of one 1st cousin are 1st cousins once removed to other 1st cousins. Grandchildren of one 1st cousin are 1st cousins twice removed to other 1st cousins, etc. Children of one 2nd cousin are 2nd cousins once removed to other 2nd cousins. Grandchildren of one 2nd cousin are 2nd cousins twice removed to other 2nd cousins. Children of one 3rd cousin are 3d cousins once removed to other 3d cousins, etc. Grandchildren of one 1st cousin are 1st cousins twice removed to other 1st cousins. That's the pattern, you can figure out the rest.

I don't blame you for feeling confused. I first heard this song in a science class that heavily touched on genetics. We had to try diagraming the family tree while listening, and IIRC the whole class (a small group of teens) got lost. The teacher used a complete chart to explain it. The truly crazy part is that nothing *genetically* incestuous happened in the story. BTW, you might want to react to Lindsey Holiday's videos on the Habsburg family tree. If you think this was crazy, you haven't seen anything yet. And the degree of inbreeding isn't even fully noted in her video. 😮 Oh, and her videos on how the monarchs of Europe are all related does go into the kinds of cousins. They're a little out of date because Margarete II of Denmark abdicated this year, but they're still a very good way of understanding degrees of cousin relationships.

Enjoyed your reaction - I have very little trouble believing that something like this has happened in the USA (Australian here). Comes to that, check out the Hapsburg royal family of Europe if you're feeling brave - the weirdness there makes this song look like a nursery rhyme..
@randycliff40452 ай бұрын
Not as complicated, but checking my family tree shows something fun. When a man was an infant, his parents died; while his siblings went to grandparents, a little baby was too difficult and he was put up for adoption. He became the youngest (by far) for many siblings, and grew to marry the daughter of his eldest sister (of course they are not 'blood' related), and this found that his sister would also become his mother-in-law.

To figure out cousins- Find the nearest common ancestor to both you and the cousin. Then for each of you count the levels in between each of you and the common ancestor. If the numbers match that's what you are. So first cousins share the same grandparents. You don't count yourself or the grandparents you share, so there's only one level (your parents on each side). If the numbers don't match, then you take the lowest number, and that's the type of cousin you are, then you subtract the smaller number from the larger and that is how many times removed. So, if you are looking at your first cousin's grandchild. The nearest common ancestor is still YOUR grandparents, so only one level for YOU, but there are three levels for your cousin's grandchild- your cousin's child, your cousin and your aunt/uncle. So, it's still First Cousins because of your one, but then you subtract that from the three, and get two. So, First Cousins Twice Removed. Your grandchildren and your first cousin's grandchildren would share great great grandparents, so they each have three levels- your children, you and your parents (and same with your cousin's), so since your grandchildren and your cousin's grandchildren are both three levels, they are Third Cousins. It sounds complicated, but it really isn't once you try it.

Okay, pay attention. Ma and Pa's kids are Brother and Sister Their kids are First cousins First cousin's kids are Second Cousins Second cousins kid's are Third Cousins etc. You and your cousins child are First Cousins Once Removed (because the child is one generation from your first cousin) You and your cousins grandchild would be First Cousins Twice Removed. (Two generations from a first cousin) Since your child and your cousins child are second cousins, your child and your cousins grand child would be second cousins once removed.

You really only need to the first 4 people to come to the final conclusion. Ray's (step) daughter married his father. That means she is his (step) mother. Ray's wife, as the girl's mother, is then Ray's (step) grandmother, and, since he is the husband of his grandmother, he is technically his own grandpa.

It was all so clear in my mind until I tried to write it down. This may be on point or totally off base. It's 50/50. His father is both his dad and son-in-law. His stepdaughter is also his stepmother since she's married to his dad. His son is now both brother-in-law and grandson to his father as well as brother to his stepdaughter, and the stepdaughter is also the baby's grandmother since she's married to his grandfather. Since she's also his step-mother his son is his brother. Since his son and the stepdaughter are "brother and sister", but she's also his grandmother because she's his father's wife that makes his son his uncle also being that he's the brother of his grandmother. Now, for the tricky part. The father and stepdaughter have a son (#2). #2 is his grandson, but also his brother since it's his father's son. When the stepdaughter had #2 it made the man's wife now a grandmother. Since he's married to a grandmother he's now a grandfather to #2, also. Since he's a brother to #2, and #2 is their grandchild, his wife is his own step-grandmother, and as her husband he's his own grandpa.
