It has been an absolute hoot these last weeks, with all the suspence, excitement and comedy when keeping track with diifferent processes of Tally Hos capstain and Doms adventures with Ranalah and all the ancient tools. I am already dredding the day when Tally Ho finishes and Dom finds out that he has done all the weird things under the sky, what are we going to watch then?😅

I remember broaching keyways when i was an apprentice engineer back in the day. Sometimes, i had to grind a tool up and cut the keyway while the job was still in the lathe. Good old days.
@samrodian91910 ай бұрын
Great progress Dom and John. The bike seat looks just right and better than that it should feel ten times better on your rear end too! With the broaching, you didn't show it but you must lubricate the back of the broach every time with the successively thicker shims, there is an enormous amount of pressure on the back of the broach even more than on the teeth because of the area involved. You may have say three or four teeth engaged in the slot, but the shim or in the case of the first push through, is fully engaged area wise all the time and needs as much lubrication help it can get. Also the arbor press need to have at least the two back floor mountings bolted to the floor. I'd suggest you put it somewhere where you can bolt it down with a removable hold down system that you can take it out and have the floor space available without threaded studs sticking up out of the floor. I know it's just a set up to prove proof of concept, but if you are going to make all the axles and such on your lathe, you have shown yourself doing the turning with an indexable turning tool, try running the lathe spindle at higher revs to see if you can improve the surface finish of your part, as carbide likes to run fast. On CNC machines, the spindles can reach ridiculously high revolutions. It looks as if you were using ordinary mild steel for your parts, well MS doesn't turn very nicely anyway, on the parts for the genuine half sized models use the same steel as you have specified for the full sized ones.

Love the Tiger, I had one when I lived in Malawi ,Cent Africa, I found it by accident stuffed behind a shed at a country club I worked at in the 80's. We removed the shed and lo and behold there is a tiger, took some fettling but not by me but a bunch of "bush" mechanics. The thing I remember most about it was my mate had a Honda 550/4 at the time and my bike was always on the road and his was always getting fettled.

Yes broaching is hard work but very satisfying. You really need a better way to keep the mechanincial advantage on the press so it's less of a struggle. I'd also make sure the broach is fixed to the arbor because you don't want it slipping off and breaking ! The last job I did was to make a chainwheel with a positive key i.e. I had to remove the bulk of the material to allow the keywayed shaft through. It was to replace a broken ( and now obsolete ) chain drive in a thicknesser which is now back working again 😎

You don't press in broaches with a hydraulic press. Its an extremely effective way of getting chunks of hss embedded into your body. Large broaches are pulled not pushed. Small ones use an arbor press only.

Dom, you will be fine branching with it. manual hydraulic press, it doesn't need an arbor press. An electrically driven hydraulic press would be an issue and could lead to damaged broaches. I use my arbor press for small broaches up to 5mm, then the 10-ton manual hydraulic press for any bigger than that as they are such hard work with the arbor press at that size

When it comes to SD cards and USB flash drives, they generally use pretty bad chips to get the low cost we all want. There are quality ones available at far higher prices which are probably justifiable in your situation. I've also heard many stories of Amazon workers routinely mixing up counterfeits with real products so I only buy these from reputable computer stores. And definitely not Ebay either.

Suggest that if your camera has an external link cable, rather than remove the card, connect with thw cable to a pc/mac, whatever you use and download directly... entirely possible for failure of cards to occur just with removing and then inserting into another slot.....Then after downloading, always save to a separate backup drive as well.
@mkllove10 ай бұрын
Dom, The card may have an issue where it can be restored or repaired still... The computer not seeing or ecognizing it is likely a sign of corrupted data or formatting. In Windows or Linux at least you can get the disk manager or disks programs up and running, and those programs can usually see usb attached storage in spite of issues. Right click on the likely target, it will usually say unformatted or have a generic name saying the size of the card to help identify storage card. Look for a disk repair option in the pop up menu after right clicking. Chances are it can be restored partially or fully to restore access. In case card is going bad, just use it as a backup for less critical or current info. It should hold data well but not be tolerant of frequent usage...

Brake light & headlight. If the switches have previously been used on incandescent lamps (high current) or are old, dirty or both then there can be issues with LEDs. My Brother had a similar problem when he updated the instrument cluster on his Ducati. The contact resistance has to be very low for the low current of the LED to pass the switch. But when feeding your incandescent headlight then the total current is high and the power passes the bad contact.
@farmerjohn619210 ай бұрын
Probs in your case the bad contact could be in the magneto itself, maybe the brake light would work without the headlight if you temporarily fit a battery!!
