In Episode 9 (Part 4,) Brock continues ‘go fast’ modifications, this time to the rear of Gixzilla. Instead of duplicating a home garage or side of the road bearing install, Brock shows you how it’s done using professional tools and techniques.

I am a solid 3yrs rider. Started late in life with a ninja 250r. Was honestly shaky and stalled twice and dropped bike once at a stop but for the most part of the last 2 seasons (can’t ride in nh all year long) modding the bike to the peak a person can with a 250r. You know, mods for 70% of these guys is lever changes and tail tidy lol. Maybe a strap on….I mean, slip on haha. I’ve gutted the cats…on my 2nd set of carb jets, topped out and geared to do a whopping 103 downhill with wind. Hoping to purchase a 2021 (I want that particular paint scheme) mt-09 that I’ll ride for 1 season then send it to Moore for an in person dyno session with tune. Stage 2 air filter and most likely Brock’s pipes. I just am here to say thank you Brock and Chris for all you do for the bike community. You guys are good role models and experts in the field. Sorry for the rant. Just wanted to let ya know that even tho you’ve done this for years, there’s still newbie riders like me discovering you, learning, and executing proper bike maintenance, riding, and modding/tuning. Love ya!!!

Hey Brock. Quick question. I’m about to do swingarm and ceramic bearings tomorrow. Couple questions. Removing rear brakes. Have everything, but will the ABS pump need to be plugged? Where do I stop taking off for rear brakes? Does the abs even work for front wheel? Also, stock wheels putting these ceramic bearings in there? Don’t have the 4k for carbon wheels yet, when I do, are bearings reusable in new wheels?

@Blixxerdmv, you will want to have a copy of the genuine service manual for your bike in hand before attempting your mods, as all of your questions except the last are covered in detail. Yes, we use these in stock wheels - there is very little chance the OEM bearings will match BST fitments, if that's what you are asking?

When the wheel bearings are replaced is it possible to remove dust seals without them getting damaged?

The dust OEM seals are no longer required after installation of our ceramic bearings as they are equipped with low tension seals to reduce power reduction due to seal friction.

I have a couple buddies saying it’s pretty pointless to do the ceramic bearings on regular cast wheels and only worth doing if your gonna upgrade wheels. Obviously you have some sort of results with those stock wheels on gixzilla but would you still recommend even if you never plan to upgrade wheels? I can’t decide if $400 is worth it or not hahaha!

Your buddies are 100% incorrect, IMHO. In fact, since heavy cast wheels don't like to roll easily, the results of ceramics are even more pronounced. Make sure to pay close attention to how your bike rolls around the garage floor, costs on the road etc... You will feel the difference!.

No. The low friction seals on the bearings keep dust out. We are careful not to hit them with a pressure washer though...corrosion from this is about the only way they fail.

Super good videos you got ! But the chain it was not to tight? Normaly when you sit on the bike it gets more "load" weight and chain starts to be over tightened (talking from my own experience). 2-2,5cm it must go up-down when its not loaded if im correct?

Does the service manual consider chassis and suspension mods? Adjustable lowering links, front end straps etc... The manual is great for a 100% stock bike. It's up to us to use our knowledge, common sense and experience to make adjustments to a modified bike.

I have played with hybrid ceramic bearings in few different high speed applications. My testing has not revealed any performance gain over a good quality S.S. bearing that has been properly lubricated and installed. One big advantage is that the overall bearing is more corrosion resistant. Built jet engines for years, we never touched bearings with our bare hands and the oil from your skin is a corrosive. Best of luck with the bearings, but I would like to see some actual data comparing them head to head.

Our average is 1 to 1.5 MPH gain in the 1/4 mile on most applications. lighter/lower power bikes like 600's pick up well, as do heavy/high speed bikes. The stock length is generally a great spot. Shorter wheelbase bikes have a tendency to turn a bit quicker, but they can also get 'twitchy'. But we are splitting hairs, you just need to try it.

you should use a tram guage to measure from centerpoint of swing arm bolt to centerpoint of axel rear axil to get perfect thrust angle on rear tire i do auto body work as well that was my living for 40 years geting the bottom end square is what its all about in performance and straight hole shot the thrust angle of rear tire

I learned the things about gearing through experience. The dyno chart also helps, so you can optimize that powerband to your gear setup. That is how it's done on the street and track, but on a straight line you don't want too much except if you want wheelies all the time. You just need to match things together, and that's where knowhow is *needed* . You cannot go guessing, but you better try it firsthand to get started. If you get the things right in mind, you will enjoy it in the long run! (edit: needed is in bold)

Hi Brock, love your video's. I have a question that will probably be a little odd for you but here goes. Would you recommend ceramic wheel bearings for bikes that tour and would it provide noticeable better fuel economy? It may seem like I'm penny pinching but I live in Australia where increasing the range of a bike even slightly can mean the difference between between reaching the fuel stop or a long walk. The longest distance between fuel stops on a main road in Australia is 287kms.

I think is definetly the chain that slowing down.plus the fact that chain is cold. Mine on my gsxr 1000 with 520 is spinning pretty good cold, and much more better when chain is worm after a ride when I clean and lube it.

It helps- our general rule is that removing 25-30 lbs. from the rider should be worth about 1/10th improvement in E.T. in the 1/4 mile.

I meant "break" instead of "brake" lol but yes the 3D chain is amazing, it's only a few hundred pounds of tensile strength less than the stock 530 chain, but being that the 3D 520 is rated at over 9400 lbs. it works! If I am correct, the new ZX10RR's come factory with a 520 chain as do BMW's new "M" spec but you might check for yourself on that. To me, that kind of says that it might mean something.

ZX-14's have the best stock clutches for drag racing. The 14R does need a mod, but it's inexpensive.

@ Brock Davidson Hi I love your videos. I do 1/4 mile in my country and I have a 1000 GSXR 2017 R with the ecu flasher but I have an extended swingarm. is the 17/42 as good for my bike with the extensions as you suggest in the video?

Generally no on the 17/42. The extensions will help prevent wheelies, so you can run a higher overall gear ratio to promote quicker acceleration. 16/45 would be a good selection, but the bike might rev too high on the interstate, etc. It really depends upon what type of riding you do.

You don’t torque sprocket bolts to spec???

yes. If they are in an important location that requires proper torque. On smaller bolts, I like to use 1/4" drive and feel the torque - the torque wrench can't 'feel' if the threads are about to strip out.

For sprockets you should try supersprox they have an aluminium centre and steel teeth

I love these videos!!! Question , I work on vintage motorcycle at a shop in Lewisville Texas called vjmoto, I have to clean A LOT of carbs and tuning can be a bitch , what tool would I be able to get to read what’s coming out of the exhaust so there is no more guessing ?

We use our dyno to load the bike at different RPM's and monitor the AFR with our sniffer. If you don't have access to a dyno, you can mount WEGO , go for a ride and record.. although it's tougher on a bike with carbs because it doesn't monitor throttle position. "tall" is a realative term, as the gear chart shows.

Surely it’s the gearbox that’s creating most of that drag, not the chain? I do agree that the chain plays a small part, but there’re are other things that factor in. Like have you cut you brake pads in half?
