In the Tag Force games, if you do the Yata Lock against the AI, they are programmed to surrender. Neat attention to detail.

Might not be intentional. I don't know much (or really, anything) about the AI in the Yugioh games. But, I do know that in strategy games the AI is almost always programmed to surrender (if the option is available) if no other options are available. The idea is simple. Every turn, the AI in turn-based games chooses one of the options available to it. If the only thing that an AI can do is surrender, it will surrender because it has no other options. If you don't have the option to surrender, it could cause serious problems unless you design the game around surrendering never being an option (like, say, Advance Wars). It sounds like the idea behind the Yata-Lock is to create a situation where the AI has no option to choose other than surrender. Again, I could be wrong, but it sounds like to have the Yata-Lock in play requires the opponent to have no other option than to surrender. I don't know. To me, it seems like it would be easier and more useful in general to program the AI to choose to surrender once it realizes that it can't possibly win, than to program an AI to surrender in a very specific situation involving a specific card.

Yata-Garasu is such a great card. It's completely broken, but it's an amazing example of a skill testing card in that its power isn't super obvious just looking at it head-on. Thank Wizards for never printing anything similar in Magic, I can't imagine something like "1U, 1/1, flying, haste, whenever this creature deals damage to a player, that player skips their next draw step. At the end of each turn, return this creature from the battlefield to its owner's hand." That would make people literally cry.

Ah Yatagarasu. I had the pleasure of actually beating this deck back in the day. My opponent got me into this lock after a well placed Raigeki. He then summoned his yata and hit me with the lock. He also had a lvl 4 1800 attack sea serpant (can't remember its name) that would do the btunt of the damage. The thing was, I had Card Destruction and Pot of Greed in hand. Also in my graveyard I had Sinister Serpant. On my turn I got serpant back to my hand and set it. I ended my turn. I kept doing this for about 4 turns. He never once activated any spells or set traps. So on my next turn I activated POG and drew my Dark hole. Nuked his monster and set the Mirror Force I also drew. Activated Card Destruction and got rid of that darn bird. I summoned my Dark Elf and attacked him to drop him to 1500 life points. Ended my turn. He placeed a face down monster and ended his turn. Next draw was nobleman of crossout and I used it. It was a Fiber Jar and he was open for as direct attack. He was not too happy after that and left before his next match.

Story time: Alright so it's been a long time(2004) but I did consistently beat Yata/Envoy decks back when they were the best deck. I made this deck to celebrate after winning a regional with the Meta BLS/Chaos/Yata deck. You see, for a time BLS and Emperor Dragon were restricted but DMOC was not yet; and Painful Choice was still also only restricted. My deck was of course Tripple DMOC(way before the errata) w/ Monster Reborn, Premature B, Painful, Graceful, MoF(Semi), Apprentice Magician etc etc etc. I didn't need Envoy or BLS or Yata as I could fairly consistently bring out 3 DMOCS. I can comment the list if anyone cares. Also during the Yata era but before Chaos stuff was out(maybe 2003) I had an amazing machine deck that never lost to Yata even once. Limiter Removal was at 3 and I was lucky enough to own 3 Mechanical Chasers(TP1 was new still) and also figured out Magical Scientist could bring out 3 Machine Dragons and they can all attack over a Reaper on the Nightmare which you Creature Swapped to them of course. I really thrived competitively during these YGO eras and made a lot good friends. I still have my Millennial Puzzle Trophy too. I'm thinking about playing in April again but not sure yet. Thank you sincerely if you've read this far.

you're so close. it's something that almost happened TO yugi, but his opponent didn't know how to do it correctly to auto-win because protagonist. instead yugi beat slifer twice by turning the second mouth against it. one by deckout, which now that i'm already into typing i just realized you were prolly referencing; and the other killing all 3 gods with the second mouth by reversing their magnetic polarity.

@qty1315
@qty1315 5 жыл бұрын
@@Serin9X Not really. I think it's more that they didn't think that a big competitive scene would form around their card game for kids about monsters and magic. It seems like they only expected to sell the cards to kids for a few years while the anime was on the air. A couple broken cards here or there didn't matter too much when the scope of the competitive scene was 12-year old kids playing against each other on the playground. Hack, keep in mind that the early days of Yu-Gi-Oh were filled with cards that are considered to be broken these days (Pot Of Greed being the most famous) simply because Konami didn't care about balancing the game in the slightest. Overpowered cards (Blue-Eyes, Exodia) are fun for kids to win with, and they'll continue to buy packs of cards to get those OP cards. It's like how early Smash Bros. games were incredibly unbalanced for competitive play. They weren't initially designed to be played competitively, so they didn't need to be balanced. Mewtwo in the original Pokemon games is also a good example. The creator didn't intend for Mewtwo to be balanced, or have any counters at all, because Mewtwo was meant to be a Pokemon that broke the game because you caught it at the end of the game. There weren't any intentions of creating competitive Pokemon tournaments, so why would it matter if Mewtwo was virtually unbeatable?

I used to play yugioh when I was in 8th grade, about 14 years ago, right around the time that CED and the Yata lock were going strong. I remember going to local tournaments where dudes (that were significantly older than me and capable of buying however many boosters that were necessary) would kick my ass left and right using the dreaded combo. It's funny though, as a kid, I really didn't consider that the game could be so flawed as to allow a strategy so broken, so I always attributed my losses to my own level of skill and lack of funds to get the cards I wanted/needed. Looking back, clearly the strat was broken af, and I'm thoroughly surprised that I made it as far as I did without abusing Yata, Chaos Emperor, or Black Luster. Good for you, young Joe.

Can confirm. I attended local sanctioned tournaments every week as a kid back in the early 2000's and adopted the Yata Garasu strategy when the card was first released. It made me pretty much unbeatable. I won around 50 tournaments in a row (maybe more) or approximately 150 duels with zero losses, making me the two time regional champion, and I received two official Millennium Puzzle trophies because of it. I ranked in the top 100 in North America and top 1000 worldwide on the official Yugioh website. I actually started to feel guilty about it towards the end, because it really wasn't fair. The only people who could even compete against me were others using the same strategy. I remember once being down to 200 hp while my opponent still had a full 8000, and I still managed to win due to getting him into a "Yata Lock." I quit Yugioh after receiving the second trophy, and was not at all surprised to learn years later that the strategy had been banned.

So I'd know all the cards, but tournaments and the bandits wasn't something I ever paid attention to, so having this history lesson is much better than just looking up the card, because just seeing its effect doesn't give the true scope of why these cards were such terrors.

Back then, the Yata-Lock as it was known really only ever referred to the combo game-ender of Chaos Emperor Dragon, Witch of the Black Forest/Sangan into Yata. Any other play, and there was an outside chance to play around the Yata with the right resources. You only felt true despair and knew the full meaning of the term Yata-Lock after getting Emperor Dragon-ed into no resources while watching your opponent add Yata to their hand. That was when you were truly locked out.

This video is perfect. It describes the time era so right on. One thing missed was the MONEY it took in order to build these decks to make these locks happen! Like you couldn't buy singles or reprints yet, so in order to get some of the cards necessary, you had to do insane stupid trades loosing good cards to get "better" cards, work on getting those older ones back, And/or BUY more packs. It was so insanely stupid, you can imagine that that kind of money creep could definitely alone kill the game. Pretty much all competitors had to run a Yata lock deck and rush to get there out first, you were right on there. Banning it saved the game but I want to buy one now so bad cause it's a part of the history.

I even knew one kid who got a part-time job at Whataburger just so he could afford to build his deck. Cards like Yata-Garasu, Chaos Emperor Dragon-Envoy of the End, Black Luster Soldier - Envoy of the Beginning, Jinzo, Sinister Serpent, Monster Reborn, Premature Burial, Change of Heart, Pot of Greed, 3x Mystical Space Typhoon, Raigeki, Harpie's Feather Duster, Dark Hole, Heavy Storm, Painful Choice... it was a great time to play the game!

The Yata Lock was so powerful I was able to duel 2v1 because all cards complimented each other. I Yata Locked every game but never got Yata Locked myself. It was so despised and misunderstood at the time. Even when I switched decks and played with other duelists decks, they could never pull it off. I remember putting 3 win conditions in my Yata Lock Deck. The best times

This was a good review, most other reviews about this only focus on the Chaos Emperor Dragon combo. I brought yata garasu to a local tournament when he first came out and dominated with it. But this was before CED ever existed. So it used confiscation, delinquent duo, forceful sentry, drop off x3, don zaloog x3, spirit reaper, and cards like mystic tomato to get don and reaper out slowly eating up their hand picking away at them making them skip draw phases until the lock was on. It was far and away the most powerful and dominant card in the game. And it wasn't easy to get as a 000 secret rare, you pretty much had to buy multiple booster boxes or pay $70 on ebay essentially making it a pay to win card at the time. CED continued that tradition as another 000 secret rare. A lot of people in my area who couldn't afford those cards simply could not play in a competitive game. Anyway thanks for the nostalgia

Im 32 now, I remember playing in this era of Duel monsters. When yata came into the meta it really salted up ppls feelings. Like it was the first time i saw in tournaments a monster doing life point damage and the opponent quitting the same turn. I left the scene before it got banned. But yea, this brought back the good memories. I even remember when Gemini elf was released and all of us were so pumped lol I hope you kids playing now are having a great time playing. Duel Monsters was my haven growing up

Nice video. Brings nostalgia. I think you should use old card texts for your videos though, as that Witch of the Black forest had a different version of its effect back then. So it throws the explanation off.

Ironically, I'm rather fond of Yata, despite having only been on the receiving end of one. It was just such an iconic card of the time that hearing about it only brings back the fond memories I have of the DM era. My friend also had one in his Chaos Control deck, which sported three copies of DmoC. If he didn't take you out turn one with Painful Choice and Monster Reborn, he''d end the game by his fourth turn. Gonna be building my own version of that deck as soon as I can, just for the nostalgia.

I remember being 14 years old around 2004 and reading a tournament report about the top 8 from a regional or something. One opponent had played down to an empty hand and ended his turn with no creatures in play. The other opponent looked over his plays and ultimately normal summoned Yata from hand. The crowd gasped as if the match was over, but the opponent revealed torrential tribute and the game went on. Card was so busted to its peers that even appearing outside of the combo was an immediate instant speed removal check with the game on the line. BTH was the popular way to deal with threats then, torrential tribute was limited at the time, and ring of destruction is the only other trap I can think of from that meta that would have helped. In retrospect its nuts that a card was allowed to be that powerful with 0 deckbuilding cost.

This took me all the way back. I remember when this came out, I pulled a Yata in one of my first packs from the set and none of us really got why it was that rarity cuz it didn't seem strong at the time, but once we messed around with it I went from the one that got the unlucky pulls to the luckiest one in the group cuz Yata was ridiculous at that time.

I remember around 2003 playing with my buddies, I ran, still do, a Red-Eyes deck and my buddy ran a fiend deck with Yata, and god was that the bane of my existence….he ran a Yata Banish build and his ace was Maju, and depending on how his opening turn went down it was pretty much game over…dark times

I've chased the high that my yata hand control deck created in every card game I've played since then. I stopped playing a set or two after Legacy of Darkness, but looking back it truly was an incredible time to be playing that insane set of cards. Hearing '15 years ago' is nauseating, however... 😅

ugh... Yata-Garasu a card I'll never forget. Back when I used to play Yu-gi-oh a lot, it was actually during that era. my first deck was SDY gen 1 so I've been with the game for a while, but I was at a local tournament one day, and I was doing shockingly well (I got 8th place I think, but its locals so no one cares but that's not the point anyway lol) anyway, I end up going against this one player, who always seemed to have either Smashing Ground, Fissure, Hammer shot and what not for any monster I had on the field. I never could have more than 1 monster cause they'd just blow it away. Eventually they tributed for Airnight Parshath, equipped it with Axe and well, I couldn't do anything, all my resources were pretty much gone, had no more back row, had nothing in hand, and had nothing but 2000 and below defense creatures. She eventually summoned Yata-Garasu... my first time ever even seeing the card, and it was GG from there. >< I couldn't play against that player at all, she was too good, and likewise those cards were way too broken during that era >

I can't believe he leaves off the other card that made the Yata lock op even before the next series was Drop off, had same effect as Yata control there resources and was very useful to keep there hand limited to 5 at the start of the duel and you could run 3 of them in the deck which made it a high chance to pull of the Yata lock.

When I was playing during that era(wind control), CED, BLS Envoy, Manticore, were the things to avoid. Once you seen the foundation of the deck, it was a race against time to shut them down.

I JUST found this video. I have lived through what was the local competitive scene at the time and Yata was first pulled on me. Struggling through the pain of trying to figure out what to do with a stagnant hand while Yata poked me each turn, getting more and more frustrated by it until I quit. I Literally quit Yugioh play for years. Fortunately I NEVER had to live through CED nuking me before the bird pecked my heart out, so I guess yay me.

I remember that card. All too well. Also caught several people off guard when they played my deck at the time which was a fringe life gain deck. By the time they locked me they had only 10 cards left and I was still around 6k so I made them play it out and they decked themselves. Twice. More or less my highlight back in the day before the ban list.
