After you get it fired up on starter fluid use spray lube to keep it running this way you don’t dry out rings. Diesels won’t start on spray lube but will run on it. We do it when getting old tractors running.

Annihilation, I have actually started an old Perkins Diesel on WD40 before, I agree, That's much better than starting fluid. Some times, it takes starting fluid to get an engine that been sitting for a long time to start .

broken crankshaft or valve timing for accelerating cold engine. should remove the injection pump and the nozzles to check first if any nozzle gets stuck can wash the cylinder causing the engine to lock up

Worst thing about that truck is it has a 4 spring reyco suspension instead of the traditional Mack camelback springs. It must have been changed because I don’t remember them coming with that suspension on that early.

Yes Mack R series long frame was from the sixties mhm yes... that is a long frame so it’s probably a ‘73-‘82 model but they did start making r series macks in ‘66
