This simple but elegant appetizer (or hors d'oeuvre) is made with only a few ingredients. A very thin layer of anchovy sauce adds a pleasant umami without an offensive fishy flavor. Use more if you really like the flavor of anchovies. I used some recently baked bread (the Italian Sausage Bread) but a baguette would work equally well. According to my food encyclopedia, garlic bread is traditional.
The anchovy sauce can also be drizzled over cooked pasta or as a dipping sauce for pieces of bread, in which case you would add more oil, up to 1 cup (240ml).
