People have an aversion to someone that speaks truth, and has integrity.

Glad to hear about the cheerleader effect. That's something we have cultivated over many decades. Early on, I actually unintendedly offended one of my husband's relatives by saying that if anyone ever treated my husband badly, that would ensure a direct converstion with me. They thought I was saying I thought they would ever offend my husband, but I wasn't --- I was just saying that I was in my husband's corner and I would aggressively protect him. And I privately thought they should have been glad to know that he had someone in his corner, come what may.

Good advice. I remember reading a book called The Dating App Confessions by Logan Tindel that was helpful.

Successful marriages require two reasonable and fair minded people who vow to do the daily work needed to keep love alive. It also requires a standard of behavior they both can agree to stick to. This does not always happen and people forget to value their partners.
