Mark - could you interview someone who works at an animal shelter? I'd love to hear someone's in-depth perspective on people's relationships to/with animals - how they don't succumb to despair with cases of extreme abuse/neglect - that sorta thing. Could be interesting...

I think sexual economics theory by James Sexton is problematic because it seems like it is being discussed by James, Mark, and even Orion as if sex is only a need that needs to be filled by men and not a mutual fulfillment of existential needs by both partners, both men and women. Mark, I highly recommend interviewing Esther Perel for an alternative perspective.

My husband and I were married for 38 years before he got pancreatic cancer and died. And when we would go to a party or out with other couples, many times when we got home, he would say, “you were the prettiest one there”. I wasn’t and I knew it. I knew how blessed I was. We held hands in the movies and even driving in the car. I miss him greatly. ❤

Fellow divorce attorney here (Pennsylvania and New Jersey). I am so happy divorce attorney James Sexton has a platform to tell the general public what we see all the time. Get educated about divorce if you are even thinking about getting married. Or simply stay single. You can still have amazing relationships without bringing state law into your life and finances.

As far as uncomfortable “economic” truths… I don’t go to work as a nurse because I like caring for people. I go to work as a nurse to make money, the same reason everyone else goes to work. Does being a caring person make me a “better” nurse, probably, but if there was not adequate compensation, I would not be in nursing or healthcare for that matter. I live alone, own 2 properties mortgage free, rental income, own my vehicle & have a strong retirement plan. There is NO CHANCE that I would get married & potentially jeopardize my financial future… well if I did have a momentary loss of reason & I decide to get married, I AT LEAST would have a pre-nup. @@Mithrandeer I'm glad you realized it. To be honest, I am surprised at how many people do NOT notice it. The major theme here, is death. James said he volunteered for hospice care, he saw death, willingly. Any Vet who's been in combat, we do the same thing, we see death up close, but we either bring death, or we fall to it. That is why we look at time differently. We don't have time to waste anymore, because we know death is coming.

When I was 45 (about 20 years ago), I noticed that men got way too comfortable being married. It’s just not in their comfort zone to be without. The women I’ve known, have all said that once was more than enough. I’ve only met a couple of men I would want to commit to. Unfortunately, it took me too long to realize that.

All of the wife's starting watching TikTok looking at Tarot Cards, Astrology, going to therapy and then all of a sudden the missed out of life and boom 💥 I'm not happy and want a divorce. I'm in the same boat as well married 17 yrs and together 21 with 3 sons. I'm over it all and just applied for my passport, opened a new bank account, opened a post office box. Did couples counseling and I was blamed for things 20 yrs ago. Therapist told.my wife sounds like you feel lost and unfulfilled and that she took no accountability for her own failed mistakes, wife get pissed off and doesn't want to return back, which tell me that the therapist she has been seeing for the last 3 yrs doesn't hold her accountable nor acknowledge her bad chlices she has made in our marrage, so it's a waste of money in the long run.

We needed marriage counseling once after I got PTSD from a deployment but thankfully we became so much stronger from it. People either grow together or grow apart. Growing apart has more often then not because people don’t take accountability of their own issues and hope the other partner will fix them. Glad you both are happy and well. I almost wedded in my early 30's: when it didn't pan out, I felt like I had lost out on a Disney film. Good to have honest, sincere outlooks on 1.) marriage and divorce and 2.) the struggles or raising a kid. As dark as some of it can be, it's one of the "better" parts about the modern internet. I got married to my wife last year. Been living with each other for 8 years . Big advice to people who plan on getting married. Live with that person. when you do you tend to know that person on a deeper level, whether they’re clean freaks or messy. And just like school, marriage isn’t for everyone. Only get married if you believe in true love and she’s your soulmate, other than that it is just a title or piece of paper. I’ve witnessed my own parents get divorced and yeah I was 15 years old when it happened.

It is a bizarre dynamic. We get into relationships wanting to be close to a person, but if that happens it hurts the relationship. But it depends on expectations and how you define "relationship". My parents screamed at each other, treated each other with contempt. Married 73 years when mom passed at 91. I kind of thought dad would be happier, but he's been very broken up. I don't understand it. I have to assume familiarity trumped their contempt for each other. Bizarre.
