To answer James' question, yes, a few japanese players did record their playing on VHS at the time and you can find videos online of the games being played with the audio being broadcasted in real time. Of course, since it was a broadcast, it meant everybody heard the same thing at the same moment, so it could play, like, the overworld theme while you were in a dungeon etc. There were voice acting but not of the on-screen characters obviously since there was no way to know which characters could be seen and what they were doing on the player screen at any given moment. The game and broadcast were synced however (hence the clock) and at specific time, some game actions would automatically take place synced with the audio. In this Zelda 1 remake, the game would pause and prompt you to listen closely to the broadcast. In the Zelda-3-like game, it would cast special powers, etc. It was a pretty interesting bit of technology but overall, the real time radio broadcast thing kinda limits how much you can do... like you can't even play music that is specific to where the player is located. Still fascinating though.

Here's a tip for you. Save and quit and then start up. You'll begin on the next week. Then Level 3 and 4 open up to you. Map 2 is the 4th Quest. The 2 characters besides Link are the BS mascots (boy and girl).

This isn't the actual BS Zelda, just a romhack of it made to be closer to the original Zelda. Link doesn't appear at all in the actual bs zelda and the game has full voice acting; the game is impossible to play on English SNES hardware. It also had true orchestral music from the official Zelda soundtracks, but only ancient stone tablets was entirely orchestral There does, however, exist a fandub for ancient stone tablets that you can run on a dedicated emulator and there exists a bs Zelda fan site where you can find this and play it

Nikita Krivko As said, the original broadcast included only the girl and the boy in the baseball cap as playable characters (depending on the gender that particular satellaview console was signed up as), so having the option to play as Link is, indeed, a ROMhack. Not to mention all the translated text.
@RodimusPrimal

The reason themes song are not as common, is because most games/movies want the music to blend in to the background. In film, they actually use "temp music", where the director takes music from other sound tracks, and then puts them against scenes in the rough cut. Then he tells the composer to make something "similar to this". The same thing is happening in video games as well. So basically, most modern productions of games/film, they want the music to be like ambient/background and not be as up front. And they also use temp music in the editing process, since it's as easy as dragging and dropping - and pointing towards a composer, and telling them you want something like this.

Wow, this is an incredible insight! I had to do a KZbin search after watching this and I found that the narrator would introduce things that would effect the gameplay. It would have been good for James and Mike to hear the voice to know when things changed in the game. For instance, there's a bit where all the monsters get killed on the screen for some reason; that was part of the narration where he casts a lightning spell.

So what you guys had to do was buy the arrows in the shop, at which point it would have been replaced by the candle, and then you could have burned those bushes blocking your way. Or you could have waited for the event where the old man temporarily gives you the red candle, possibly. And yes, there are recordings of the original broadcasts up on KZbin. Someone even reuploaded them with English subtitles and annotations. Definitely worth a watch, in my opinion.

Broadcasting data is different than broadcasting audio, game data is digital and radio audio is analog, so the voices were made like any other game had them made. If you heard the data of the broadcast through a speaker on a analog equipment, it would sound like static and beeps, even when sound data would play. Also sound was one of the biggest deals about the dawn of the CD media in home console gaming.

9:45 - it was in Majora's Mask in the overworld. Also used as the overworld theme in Oracle of Ages and Oracle of Seasons. Full theme heard in both Twilight Princess and Skyward Sword during the staff roll. It's better to use that theme as call backs in various tracks throughout the game and the full theme in the ending. That's the best approach to me. New, originally composed overworld themes that reference it are a great approach too.

"And there was another one called 'Triforce of the Gods'" James.... What do you think A Link to the Past was called in Japan?

He probably made the natural assumption that it was still called a Link to the Past.

New ghostbusters 2 was famicom. It was made by Hal labs and is one of many examples of famicom games only released in Europe. Another great example is Devil World from Nintendo.

Love the vid! Had no idea this existed. Japan's insular culture really reaches across all media. They would really make bank releasing all these hidden and less accessible games on VC.

James raises a concern about why theme song is not a thing anymore, which is funny because it happened to his AVGN series before.

homebrew carts are just roms downloaded from the internet flashed onto them. carts of BS Zelda prove this because it never was released on cartridge and is only available on the internet as a ROM these days.

Speaking of good games you guys across the pond didn't get; try Ufouria: the Saga for NES. It's basically a cross between Super Mario Bros. 2 and Metroid. It only came out in Japan and over here, but not in North America, although I believe it is on the Wii Virtual Console (maybe even Wii U). It's really solid and the kind of game that would fit this show.

Ancient Stone Tablets is story wise a sequel to ALttP, they have also made a Homebrew cart of it it seems.

There's multiple rooms in the original that aren't on the map. Usually it's just an NPC that talks to you though.

What does sparse have to do with anything? They exist, period, which is a valid reason to bomb everywhere.
@Imaculata

That is a complete waste of bombs. There's a logic to where the hidden rooms are, and they are few.

Okay, this is one of the older hacks of the game, possibly thrown onto a reproduction cartridge. A lot has happened since that hack came out. For instance, there are newer hacks with full subtitles of what the original broadcast was saying during gameplay, including the timed events.

Apparently there are videos online that feature the original audio from players who recorded the gameplay at the time of the original broadcast.
