Now the top end is stripped and the timing cover is off, we can get an idea of what sort of condition the internals are in, which seems fairly good as it happens. I was also impressed with the quality of the design and components.

Prewar looks often much more longlife design, very often with interesting designs. Respect to the people at that time.

That looks well familiar. I wonder who was the designer, and who else were assistants, understudies etc. So many marvellous single cylinder designs from that period were from Val Page; Ariel, Triumph, BSA, and this looks related

Almost identical to my 1929 Sloper.The oil pressure tell-tail needs a return spring by the looks - a small spring with only a few turns. The end cap is threaded onto the tell tale shaft - you need to remove it to fit the spring (thread on mine was not obvious - hidden under a layer of plating.
