Great video, Bobby and sorry for your loss. Moms are special ❤ The X2D has replaced my H6D in the studio. There was no visible difference between the images out of the two, even though the H has a much bigger sensor. Yet, the handling of the X is so much better. Considering that, the X is a bargain compared to the H. Hasselblad colors have always been the best in the industry imo. What Leica does for monochrome, Hasselblad does for color. This beautiful, rich tonality gives you such a natural look and feel that is hard to match. Even in post. As a fashion photographer, I esp. look at the texture and tonality of white or black linen and silk. To capture those fabrics well and make it look natural (not digital) is quite a challenge for a camera. Hasselblad (and Leica) do that best imo.
@btonelli Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the kind words. Yes that’s what I’ve heard from other pro photographers as well. I guess this is why Hasselblad is moving away from the H system now as the X’s performance is comparable and better in some ways. Thanks for watching and commenting as well!

Just a heads up to potential buyers: the photos from the Hasselblad X2D don't come out like the samples you see online. Expect underexposed, very dark images that need a lot of work in post. Learned this the hard way and wouldn't recommend buying based on my experience. Stick to cameras that deliver straight out of the box if you want to save time and frustration. Moved back to Leica M11 and couldn't be happier.
@btonelli8 ай бұрын
Hmm this statement isn’t necessarily accurate. Some can be but others come out exposed correctly. It’s based on the metering of the camera vs exposure
@ChristianC-kx3ch8 ай бұрын
@@btonelli Perhaps a camera at this price point that produces mostly underexposed, dark photos (besides the subject you focus on) is unacceptable. It makes some of the worst out-of-the-box photos I have ever seen. Leica M11 is not a fair comparison as it has no autofocus, yet the camera .jpg is way better. So unless someone has a specific use in mind and enjoys a lot of editing, this camera is not great. This is confirmed in your video, where each good photo has been edited in Lightroom. I bought it based on many raving reviews and regretted it dearly. It loses 30% of its value when you walk out of the store, so think twice before buying it. Leica M 11 is a way better all-round camera.
@btonelli8 ай бұрын
The way it meters is slightly different and this is also similar to Phase One. The files are designed to be pushed and pulled. I do understand your frustration as I also felt this when I first had the camera for testing only to learn from other photographers you have so much latitude in the files, even if the metering isn’t like full frame per say, you can get to where you want it to be.

I now have the money to buy an X2D (well, sort of, I would have to put some things on hold to do so). But I'm waiting for the successor to the CFV-50c ii. I've been using the rear screen on my x1dii most of the time. That may be because moving the AF point just sucks through the viewfinder. Why Hasselblad didn't put in a thumbstick on the x2d is beyond me. They put a thumbstick on the handle accessory for the 907x... They know how to make a thumbstick and they chose not to put I on the x2d. I can't guarantee I would use the viewfinder more if there was a thumbstick. However, even before I got the x1dii, using the rear screen was making more sense with the modern camera. I hope that the 907x successor has a hot shoe (not a cold shoe accessory). If it doesn't, well, I may have to settle for the x2d! I don't use flash often but I do use them for the occasional portrait. Hope you were able to send your mother off well and celebrate her life with your family.

That and balancing everything with my z7ii I think this will be perfect. If you were to start with one lens for the x2d which would it be? I’m leaning towards the 38v since I usually shoot wider. But I do documentary style portraits also.
@btonelli11 ай бұрын
I’m with you. I would love to own this system some day. This was a decision I was having issues with making as well. To choose one is tough because they are both essential focal lengths. If you tend to shoot around the 28mm focal length for full frame more often than not then go 38v. The 55 is more of that 35mm to 40mm focal length. If I was based in areas with narrower streets and tight spaces 38v would be my go to. If I travel or live in bigger areas the 55 is a good option
@jharrelphoto11 ай бұрын
Thanks for the reply! I will most likely opt for the 38v. It looks like they are currently out of stock everywhere at the moment. So I may just order the 45p for now to get going. I definitely shoot more 28mm than 35mm when it comes to full frame. I do enjoy the 35mm focal length. But coming from using a Ricoh gr3 before it seems really natural to how I see things. @@btonelli

Great video as usual!! I had no idea that Hasselblad calibrates each camera, but with their emphasis on their color science, it makes a lot of sense! Also, although the compositions for the skin tone/camera comparisons were not equivalent, you can clearly see the graduality in the tones. I guess the devil is truly in the details. P.s., I would guess the camera in the first comparison (at Fushimi Inari Shrine) is a Fuji and the second one (the close up portraits) is a Panasonic; and please let me know if I guessed correctly 🤓

Editing has always been part of the process, dodging and burning, playing with exposures and cropping. Now we have more tools at our disposal. What made these cameras you mentioned great (and they are) were the people behind them knowing how and when to capture a moment that resonated with an audience. The tool’s definitely matter, but we shouldn’t take away from the talent of the photographer. Certain skills like understanding light, composition, eye for moments are still what makes photography so special. AI can do a lot, but AI needs a reference to create.

@btonelli4 ай бұрын
Thank you. I would say depends on your side of sculptors. If they are quite large you may want something lighter like the 38mm to get everything in frame but if they are small the 55 is good too. Most lenses are well corrected but there will be some slight vignetting wide open. It’s not something that bothers me much but I’m guessing you will be stopping down on the aperture to get everything in focus which will alleviate that.

@btonelli Жыл бұрын
I have a couple thoughts on this. The X1D and X1D II are fine cameras and the image quality is good. Price is also far more attractive than the X2D. Things to consider. Out of warranty costs which can go up into the thousands. That savings you have now can add it up if something goes wrong. These cameras while producing good image quality are much slower with not as good battery life. Only get if you are getting a fantastic deal and you have the funds for repair if it needs.

Hey Bobby! Sincere condolences! Thanks a lot for the great videos on the X2D! I also just saw your review of the Leica Q3. If you could bring only one camera (X2D or Leica Q3) on a trip with landscape photography and some casual travel and family shots, which would you choose? I own an X1D II and am torn between upgrading to the X2D or getting the Leica Q3... You would help me a lot!! Thanks
@btonelli Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the kind words :) Ahh tough call. I had both with me on the the trip to Kyoto and they were the two cameras I used the most. The Q3 is the more compact and easy to travel with out of the two and with video and faster AF it’s kind of an all in one camera that is just easy to get along with. The X2D is definitely an improvement over the X1D II in so many ways that once you use it, you will be spoiled. The X2D’s image quality is just sublime and as good as the Q3 is, it can’t match the depth and richness of Medium format, especially from Hasselblad. The X2D you won’t need to worry about storage as 1TB will last you for a long time. However the X2D is slower when it comes to AF performance at this point, so if that is something that concerns you then something to think about. For me I found more keepers with the X2D as it’s a more methodical camera system that makes you concentrate on capturing the photo you want, as the Q is so quick and snappy, one can just snap away and have thousands of photos in a short time, but how many will you keep? It’s a really tough decision and if one had the means to afford both then that’s the best answer, but for most people, one camera will be it. Is it about image quality first and foremost or is it about versatility? That’s what it comes down to I feel. Btw the thumbnail for the SL2 Silver was taken with the X2D, to capture the depth and realism of the silver color the SL2 has :)
@markofischer5939 Жыл бұрын

14:00 the sky and gras is the highest problem with every cmos sensor. While the Hassleblad retains better tonalities, I regret that the skies look too magenta and the greens a bit too dull too. It lacks the fine color separation of CCD even if CCD sensors have less dynamic range. It would be wonderful if the color tonalities looked spot on straight out of the camera. When you edited the blues and greens at 15:02, CCD files look like this straight out of the camera.

Thank you 🙏 I look at them as different camera systems in a way. Full frame systems will have more versatility due to the nature of the system. Medium format isn’t designed for speed but pure image quality. (it’s definitely getting better but not quite to the level of full frame). When it comes to image quality medium format will surpass full frame in terms of color, depth and now with 100MP even detail. Full frame will be more versatile especially capturing faster moving subjects and also video capabilities I can look at comparing these cameras in the future, but personally I use both for different things.

Nice! Thanks 4 the review 👍🏼 One thing: Cinematic colors...? This is becoming such trendy word and doesn't apply to standard camera colors. In Movies they use color luts... Shooting very often flat files. So when mentioning Cinematic colors it means more often NOT straight from camera...
@btonelli Жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching. When I talk about cinematic colors I’m referring to the organic, soft, natural look with wider color gamut. Some camera systems can have a very digital, crunchy look out of camera with less reproduction of colors. Yes shooting in LOG is what most do but the base has to be there. For example shooting on a RED vs Sony will have a different color science to them. Which is better is up to the individual.

@@btonelli Yeah, I use the word to. Just suddenly I started wondering 😀 What if they used the Game of Thrones LUT on a flat Sony file? Should the audience really see that? if you want to enjoy the hasselblad natural solution, you need to import the 3Fr in phocus. you ll have the real colors, and phocus removes hot pixels if you have some in long exposure. And the FFF are half size than the 3F. Personaly i convert all my pictures with phocus from 3f to FFF then i import them in lightroom.
@btonelli Жыл бұрын
@@telemaq76 I've tested both ways and found that there is a slight difference with the way the colors are rendered, and while Phocus is better, the workflow is slower and the end results are almost negligible. Lightroom has done a better job as of late working with Hassy files and the easy of use and cloud storage makes it more ideal. However if there is an image I want to print, I'll work on it through Phocus first then import into LR or Photoshop.

Thanks for your great reviews. One thing, at 6:08, HNCS = Hasselblad Natural Colour Solution, it’s Solution, not Science 😉. Check it on their homepage. - Don’t worry, you are not alone, almost all other reviewers make the same mistake. From an engineer’s pov, solution is the correct terminology. The Swedish name it correct. Science leads to a solution and it’s the solution you can integrate into a product, not science.
