Believe it or not, it’s somehow even WORSE in Korea. But y’all are 100000% right. Also BTS were complete BADASSES for saying this and coming out speaking against the older generation and society. In Korea that’s typically seen as incredibly disrespectful but they have always said they wanted to be the voice of our generation.

So "뱁새 / baepsae" actually means crow-tit! It's a type of small bird with short legs. There's a saying in Korea, "If a crow-tit tries to walk like a stork, it will break its legs." Essentially, it's a mixture of saying, "don't try to be something you're not" and "don't try to act like you're from a higher class/status of society than you are." At the time, in 2015, BTS hadn't hit it big. They were underdogs; BigHit was close to bankruptcy and BTS were looked down upon in the industry. They did start gaining traction with I Need U and Fire soon after, but they were very much seen as "try-hards" and "posers" before that. But they didn't let that stop them. That's why the English translation for this is Try-Hard or Silver Spoon.

This is one of my favorite songs from BTS! It's a satire addressing a very serious problem! Korea has the highest suicide rate among teens. Also, culturally speaking, speaking in this manner is highly discouraged and BTS was very courageous to write this song especially as idols where they are expected to be perfect. I love the irony between the playful music and dance with the lyrics, you'll see it once you watch the dance practice. Also, don't miss out on DKDTV'S explanation of this video.

a very relevant song... it was risky for bts to do this song especially being "idols." a shot at the older generation and the korean culture as a whole. it'd be great if you watch the explanation vid by dkdktv. it is truly relatable on a global scale but wonderful to understand it from bts' eyes in their own culture.

Everything you guys said is right but you also have to understand that they are Korean and South Korean society is quite different from western culture. The youth in South Korea are burdened with an incredible amount of pressure to succeed by just about everyone in society but in particular by their parents. I think too many people there have lived their lives as they thought was expected of them rather then living their own dreams. BTS has become a mouth piece for the younger generation through their music, both by confronting the tole on mental health that this type of pressure causes and lifting up the youth by teaching them how to believe in themselves, just just believe in themselves but to love themselves, to let go of the expectations, to chose your own path, to live your life for yourself, to believe in yourself. One of the things I rarely hear people talk about is how, on many levels, BTS are teachers and have been since the beginning with N.O. Great reaction gents!

Ooooh y’all are missing a nice bit of the cultural nuance of the meaning of “Baepsae” because it does not translate to “try hard”. Baepsae is the Korean term for a bird called a crow tit from the proverb “Baepsaega hwangsae geoleumeul geoleumyeon garangi ga jjijeojinda” or “If a crow-tit walks like a stork, it will break its legs”. I can understand why the translator used “try hard”, because they’re not about to do a whole explanation of the proverb and what it means in modern society to South Korean millennials and Gen Zs, but the translation is only scratching the surface of just how bold af and thoughtfully written this song is. BTS made the kind of socially critical songs other K-pop idol groups wouldn’t dare to pen or had the freedom to. As others have probably pointed out by now, DKDKTV does a really good explanation of the song as a whole, especially some of the other wordplay that gets lost in translation. I would definitely suggest you check it out!

It has more meaning in korea bcs is basically a very classist and materialistic society and this type issues are maximized, some other countries are more about "fuck it" but young coreans are under even more pressure in that sense bcs the current mindset there is very rooted to ancestral traditions so its just how their culture works

If Ivy League tuition actually matched with the value of the dollar and inflation, Harvard would only cost $8.5K a year. I'm part of Gen-X, and we had to let go of a lot. Many of us never finished college because doing what our parents did - working and going to school- just wasn't doable. Tuition or rent became a real choice.

Hello, the interpretation of the stork in the Korean context speaks of the upper class or privileged class that lived through the best economic times in the country. The silver spoon supports this symbolism, as wealthy people with the means to stay on top socially and economically tend to simplify the world order through "effort." The beapsae is a small black bird endemic to Korea and has short legs. Bangtan in the song makes a harsh criticism of the Korean (and world) neoliberal ideology of the law of effort, merit and work. In Korea, young people are put under a lot of pressure to access the best universities, since that in theory ensures a good job and a certain stability for their lives, however the competition is incredibly difficult due to corruption, sexism, misogyny and difference of opportunities. Bangtan talks about this also in Dope, not today, no more dream, N.O, spine breaker, Jump, never mind, am i wrong, lost, go go and in his solo projects as well.

I agree with others you need the explanation video dkdktv. Love your reactions and you are spot on, but there is more. This is one of my favorite songs and the dance is amazing (not just hip thrusts), but their movements are birdlike. I dislike the color coded lyrics because the translations are off (they are close but language does matter) Baepsae means crow-tit a teeny little fluffy white bird. It just hits differently than try-hard. I hope you will check out the dkdktv video. 😘💜💜💜💜💜💜💜

DKDKTV has done an explanation video of this one, if you want to react to it : kzbin.info/www/bejne/iIGXgpWeZ9eLfLc The generation that's give up is much more than that in Korea. They have name fore the different level of "giving up" (sorry, I don't really know how to say it in english). But basically, the young korean, because of the economic siutation, social pressure and all, will be called : -Sampo generation (three giving-up generation) for those who renounce to have relationships, marriage and children. -Opo (five give-up generation) plus the three above, they renounce to employment and home ownership -Chilpo (seven) with the five first one, these ones renounce to interpersonal relationships and hope. -Gupo (nine) renounce to their health and their physical appearence -Sippo or Wando (Ten giving-up generation or complete giving-up generation) at the end, they give-up their own life..
