One of the reasons I liked watching your videos on filing is because most of the other videos I watched talked about counting strokes (and no one mentioned the rakers), keeping them the same. It was so complicated I thought it would be better to just take them in to be sharpened at the hardware store. Once I watched one of your videos (and fell in love with your channel), I started filing my own by hand and I haven't had any dull chain I couldn't fix since. You're a master filer :)

Amen brother… you're right, there is a LOT of misinformation about filing chains, and in some cases the people who are putting that info out don't have a clue what they are doing..
@thenorthener6855

Great explanations on these topics… I've been trying out so many different gadgets related to chain sharpening, especially in the beginning because people told me " you gotta have this and that, file each cutter tooth with the same number of strokes, use this brand of file, buy that jig, never mind flipping the bar, it's just BS", and so on and so forth… Have no idea on how much money I used on different stuff I thought I had to have... until I met a guy who said "all you need is a good file and a depth gauge, flip your bar every now and then and keep the grooves straight.. that's all you need" .. I tried out these simple things and never went back to all the gizmos and gadgets.. I have a grinder, but I don't use it much anymore, I dress my bars when needed and that's it. Great video!!

I had issue with you saying that different lengths makes no difference at first as I was watching, it does, but in the example you give of just a few teeth, yeah it probably doesn't matter much since you do it all the time it sounds like. I've had plenty of chains though that I got 2nd hand, I'd sharpen it up and if they didn't do both even, one side about 1mm shorter or more, sometimes even less of a difference in length it would cut crooked like a darn dog leg. Loose bar gap or one bar rail higher I've had do that too. Cut crooked as hell or wouldn't cut at all regardless of chain. So I guess I'd say couple teeth, yeah I don't disagree, probably doesn't matter, especially on a big ass long chain like you'd probably be runnin. But if you've got all one side longer/shorter than the other side on the whole chain, it absolutely does matter. So, for a few teeth, its fine. But the whole chain can't have one side different length. I'll have to remember that for when I hit just a few teeth though. I'm sure you have run into that on a 2nd hand chain you've gotten here and there, (all cutters on one side being different length), was more adding that for other folks to clarify though. Bar rail gap or rail height or teeth on one side al different length or filed differently can all make a saw cut crooked or crappy. You kinda sorta touched on those things here and there but it wasn't really clear so just thought I'd put that all out there for clarity. Took me all year this year to learn those things. When I have a chain with all kinds of difference in cutter length I use a caliper to get them pretty close, I find the smallest one and file each one back till the caliper just slips over each tooth. Saved a lot of chains that way that went from cutting like crap & crooked to just like new.

Hey buckin, love the new videos, hope the hand is better now! (Of course it is). I had a question for you old friend, have you ever worked on a rigging crew? Was just curious if you knew how to make a farmer's eye out of cable, father in law showed me long time ago and I was making one the other day and thought of you. Best wishes, stay safe.

What do I need to dress my bars? Mine seem like the chain grooves are wider than they were when they were new. Is there anything you can buy to narrow the channel or is it just time for a new bar?

If it is still cutting straight? Keep flipping and using it! 😀
@bykrmom
@bykrmom 6 жыл бұрын
Wayne, I wish it was cutting straight. When I file the chain the links tip to the side. Loosey goosey as all get-out. Wanders though the cut like it's drunk. The only trouble is, it's a Chinese saw, and it's getting harder and harder to find parts. I did get one new bar for it, but for some reason it just ate the tip of the bar on top just behind the sprocket. I don't know if the bar was bad, or if the oiler stopped working.
@waynetharp
@waynetharp 6 жыл бұрын
@@bykrmom Are you positive that you have the correct thickness of chain for the bar you are using? If oiler is working and bar is routinely flipped. They last a long long time. I am not familiar with chinese saws but alot of saws the bars are interchangeable. Like the Oregon brand bar on Mac saw in video. If all possible? I would not by another chinese brand bar that came on saw but find a better brand that will work. If bar will fit just make sure oil holes line up. Sometimes they need round filed to make em line up better. Hope some or all of this makes sense. Crooked cutting is either chain or bar.
@bykrmom
@bykrmom 6 жыл бұрын
Yeah I get what you're saying. I did buy a bar/chain combo the last time. But considering there is no brand name on the parts I have no idea if they were correct or not, I just took it on faith because they came together. I'm trying to find a brand-name equivalent, but I think I will have to drop the 22" bar to 20" if I use Oregon parts, as they don't seem to list anything with a 22" bar for .325 058 chain. I'm a little bit disenchanted with my chinese saw though, I just discovered a label on it with fine print that says it's a 45cc saw. But the outfit that markets it (Stark) claims it's a 52cc saw. Grrr LOL
@waynetharp
@waynetharp 6 жыл бұрын
@@bykrmom If it is a 52cc...I would think it could pull a 24" chain n bar if wood isnt to tough and you dont force it. Just let it eat! Folks will argue their bar brands like Ford or Chevy trucks. There are some really nice and light bars out there I would suggest if cutting daily or for a living but the Oregon are a fair priced and quality bar IMO. You will be happy with one.
