Great to meet your Mother, yes you do look alike! You make using that 6lb axe look easy, they're big! That my friend is Smoking it, seen ya do it a hundred times or my name isn't BlaqueJackShellaq! My maul has the same profile as yours, unfortunately mine is shinier than that one! I don't think my heaviest AXE is 5lbs. My maul is 9lbs. Getting old I use a log splitter most of the time. but there are times I like to split with an AXE. I picked up a nice double bit at Ace Hardware it's a Collins double bit polished metal It was on sale I brought it to the managers attention that is was hung very poorly and he gave it to me for half of the sale price. $15. I was able to get it off of the perfectly good handle made the handle fit the eye and it works beautiful. Never owned a double bit before. And one day when I was feeling good I took down a poplar which was 18in. in Dia. I now have kindling to last me a few years. But after felling that I remembered why God created the chainsaw. I can't imaging the men back in the day working with axe's all day every day. I wouldn't want to mess with them!!!

Buckin' I bought a 6 pound maul at the hardware store a few years back, it looks nice does what its intended to do but way too much metal. Similar to your maul but more blunt at the end. I'll never buy one again. I don't care who makes it, haha. My 4 1/2 pound Plumb Victory, 3 1/2 pound felling axe both with hickory handles I put on them are beautiful and functional. People bash fiberglass but I love my Fiskars X27. Its a splitting axe, you have one. It will dance around a maul the majority of the time. I only keep my maul because it doubles as a sledgehammer!

We cut a lot of Post oak and red oak down here in Missouri would you use an axe for that or a maul just wondering I hardly ever see anybody use an axe around here
@w8stral5 жыл бұрын
Stringy wood like oak? Yea, maul is superior to an axe. But remember the axe in question is never a falling axe, but rather either a double headed axe or like the axe Buckin is using, a big heavy bruiser. Maple without knots, then an axe is superior. Not sure what else you have in Missouri. Lived in Ohio before moving to Washington and oak, elm, sycamore. Either case, multiple tools. I always take both or just use a wedge and a maul to split in half and then an axe to whittle the edges.

I got out and split up a tub of oak biscuits that I had cut with my various saws, yesterday. They are about one inch thick, so I used my Husqvarna Carpenters axe, while sitting on a stool at my chopping block. I had an empty milk crate on my right and a stack of biscuits on my left. I would cut them into one inch chunks and throw them in the crate. I now have two full crates full of one inch oak chunks to use on my grill or smokers. I love a good smoked Boston butt and summer is coming.

Greetings Buckin' and mum! Yes, being an Englishman I have seen and swung many Elwell Axes. My Grandpa's axe is a 4.5lb Elwell and i have another old one that is slightly bigger close to what you have. I also have a rare 2.5lb Elwell 'felling' axe with a round poll and large 'egg-shaped' eye. It has a very curved cutting edge. I still have a 7lb maul I split tons of Elm with back in England in the 1980's, much of it was 30" diameter and hard as Hell...hard on the elbows too :)
