Yep something about splitting wood that makes a man feel like a man, I think that's why it appeals to teen boys. These days there is so little a young man can do to prove his strength and prowess and I have found that handing a teen an axe and giving a little guidance lets them show off a bit, provides some exercise and gets something useful accomplished.

Buckin Billy Ray Smith your the man, thank you for sharing your experience and wisdom about logging and maintenance of power saws, it is one thing to have learned a skill at such levels and keep it to yourself but for you to share it shows how unselfish you are so thank you so much for what you do for society, and it is so humbling to see how kind you are to other people and how you take time with your son to teach him to be as skillful as you, it shows what a great father you are, but it would be great to see you guys wearing your PPE's Personal Protection Equipment, and I know it gets in the way sometimes but be safe so you can remain happy it's what the universe wants because without your well being it will be hard or impossible for you to teach others the skill the universe have invested in you.

Buckin you spoke the truth. I use to workout all the time then I took a break to start doing wood. Now three years have gone by and no weights... Just fallen, Buckin, dragging and carrying logs to trailer and then hand splitting all summer.... Nothing like it for a workout... You begin to enjoy the sweat and it cleans the pores... It gets the testosterone flowing and when you take a break at end of day you are able to enjoy and appreciate the work and rest. Buckin knows what he is talking about for sure. Thanks Buckin!

I had to pause the video just shy of 2 minutes in to comment. I just watched your live feed from beginning to end and now I am watching this. I enjoy your messages of encouragement. I use to run a landscaping business before I hurt my back, my back is why I don't do it anymore but I miss it a lot. Not so much the hard work but the feeling of freedom working for myself. Every now and then I run a peace of equipment just to see if I can but I end up quitting after less than 30 minutes from the pain. Keep up the great videos and the great message. it's really uplifting.

Oh my goodness! Reminds me of the elm I was trying to split.... Needless to say I immediately stopped selecting elm for firewood... Many people hear softwood and think easy to split and hardwood difficult to split. I find the ash, maple, beech, cherry and oak super easy to split. The hardest wood I've tried to split is elm, pine, knotty cedar and a certain type of really string oak! I find hardwood is for the most part easy to split with some exceptions. This balsam is stringy and tuff... Get all the boys from the local gym to try 3 to 4 hours of this!

My granddad allways used to say that stuff is like nailed together and I think he was right. It was a real exception when he split wood like that with the axe. Wedges and sledge hammer allways worked well and I went on with that philosophie. One time we had a piece that was to heavy to put on the borrowed wood splitter so we wanted to split it in half first. There were so many knots in it that we could not get it apart. I went into the crack with the chainsaw and just cut the knots. Looking back at it it might have been the best to put it back where it came from. For a long time the only firewood my grandparents could get onto where big stumps which were ripped out of the ground for a military land clearing. I wasn't born back then, but splitting that stuff just with hammer, wedges, axes and prybars probably wasn't that big of a fun.

That's the way my dad taught me 50 yes ago. Flick that axe just before it hits the wood and it's all good! 😀. BTW, he also said it was easier to split from the top of the wood. Thought I might pass that on and see if you see a difference. Although, we were splitting oaks, hickory, and some southern pines (Tennessee). Your type of wood may be totally different. Thanks for taking the time to teach what you know!!

Soft woods are fun to split. Hardwoods - harder, but you know this. Drink more water when swing an ax. Soak the 125 cyl. / piston with oil before yanking it out. Have fun. Hey, let the boy know (which ever one it was) bad idea to lift a chunk of wood when the ax is buried / stuck in it. Be safe.

You ain’t ever had a hard time chopping wood until you encounter a sweet gum tree. The wood grows in a spiral and is super stringy. We never were able to split it with an axe or maul and when we got out the log splitter it bit in and twisted the log over 90 degrees and get stuck...

I've been changed, I want to TESTIFY, LORD, LET ME TESTIFY, a slogan on BB Ray's Tee-shirt years ago said something like ' Be Kind' which along with others nudges changed me a bit. Now today a young lady out in public was wearing a Tee-shirt with writing to say 'When you get up in the morning, share a little kindness.' So enough already you Do-Gooders you. I get it. The fact of the matter more often than before I find my self floating away from the situation by a few feet to size things up and consider my neighbor. Funny to me. Funny huh? Be well, I have to go pick some flowers or something - screw it how about a beer. But, be kind.

Double bits give you a spare edge, and sometimes they are made so there is a thinner edge for chopping and a thicker edge for splitting. They also say the poll on a single bit is just for weight and shouldn't be used fir hitting against steel (only plastic wedges) but I've rarely seen an old axe that hadn't hit some steel splitting wedges 😄

It does to an extent as it's almost like a standing ab crunch, but the range of motion in the waist is limited in wood splitting. Core needs to be worked with a variety of movements. Lying leg raises are good, suitcase carries, sideways walking with a weight overhead. Look at Athlean X on KZbin.

I go to a 36 inch handle for my splitting axes. 6 inches is 20% of 30 inches. If you are strong enough to manage the length you can either hit harder with the same swing as a 30" or back off on the swing a bit...At my age, not having to swing as hard is a big deal. GOing with a heavier head and a longer handle let's me work all day because I don't need as much core muscle effort.

Hey buckin what I like to do with this wood is to 1/4 it with two mauls using one as a wedge and one as a sledgehammer then axe split it after trust me buddy it’s a lot easier I use the fiskers maul for the wedge because the head is ok to hit with a sledgehammer
