I have a spot that is just like that 1st clearcut. It is THICK! As in even the rabbits say "Too thick for me!". I have located 2 access points and I had a camera on one that was just barely inside and the deer activity was off the charts. They would even bed right in front of the camera. What you said at 9:10 gave me a great idea on how to hunt it when they are chasing.. And another area that is nasty thick. The 2nd spot I leave a camera year round and when I pulled the card in late Jan... HOLY BUCKS! Including a WIDE 8, that I got a picture of the year before as a wide 6 about 3/4 mile (straight line) away. That bottom reminded me so much of the Adirondacks where my parents had a camp that we hunted from.. And you DEFINITELY found a honey-hole right there!!! 2 clearcuts connected by that bottom AND woods??? PERFECT! You could get a huge one there!! Another great video and insight.. Thank you!! Oh, I will go into every thick piece like that EVERY TIME! No doubts!

@Buckman-1016 ай бұрын
Thanks for the comment Adam. For years I've been wearing those coveralls,for 2 reasons. 1 reason is that these deer really don't come into contact with humans very often.And I really don't need to educate them with too much scent. Number 2 reason is due primarily to discourage wood ticks as much as possible.I Spray the suit with permethrin,and let it dry out.Hopefully not much scent is given off.

I've always had good luck working the fringes of a cut area and in bad weather they like to hang out in the stuff you can't see more than 30 yards. The new saps make for a food source and in my area the understory evergreens will turn into walls of cover.
@Buckman-1018 ай бұрын
Thanks for the comment Stephen. I have to agree with you on the fringes. Have you ever watched deer licking the sap off of maples in the spring?It's like having an ice cream cone.
@stephencarmichael51568 ай бұрын
@@Buckman-101 I have goats and in keeping them I can bare witness to many of the habits deer would have on forage. In the spring the sap flow is a delight for both goats and deer. The goats will strip the outer bark off maple tress and eat the early buds. The deer feed off the wild falls of maple buds just prior to the first wild grass. As hunters we must pay more attention to the natural forage and spend less time playing food plot famers.

@@Buckman-101 a man could go to the sports shows, wade through crowds, attend seminars and not get what you offer! Our bucks differ from yours somewhat. Thanks for the video some helpful tips! Would you ever hunt this early season? Or often find the mature bucks really moving in once rut starts getting hot
@Buckman-1018 ай бұрын
Thanks for the comment. Usually the acorn crop determines a lot in early season,if oaks are in the area. one think to consider is water resource. In the video towards the end of that swamp had a significant amount of water.Many trails were congregated around that area,which may be a consideration during an early warm season.I will be going back there one more time this spring to determine where to hunt it.
@polarisoutdoors31058 ай бұрын
Where would you recommend to bow hunt early season. We have zero oak trees. Mostly thick walls of cedars, beach trees, ash, and scattered apple trees.
@Buckman-1018 ай бұрын
Thank you for the comment. Well,first of all having apple trees is telling me that this must be private land.2ndly,the type of habitat in my opinion does not sound rather conducive to a sustainable heathy deer population.There again what surrounds this area for other food scources,or is that it? If the apples are able to produce,by all means plunk you butt right there,if you notice they have been hitting them in past years.Where also is their source of water.Definately check that out.Are there any trails leading in or out of your cedar stands?Without seeing the area,so far I would start there.Or maybe you already are aware of these scenarios. Let me know. Email: streubeldale@gmail.com

@@Buckman-101 Hey Dale thanks again for the reply. It's all public land in Ontario were i hunt. There is public parcels with hundreds of apple trees on them. Some parts are very rocky with mature beach trees. Prime black bear country. I bump them pretty much everytime I go out. I figured with the lack of oak trees it would be benifical to maybe hunt parcels with apples and woody browse in early season? Ie red osier dog wood and woody buds?
@Buckman-1018 ай бұрын
Dogwood becomes a fine staple during the winter months down here especially.Also look for groves of any type of briar bushes .They love raspberries, blackberries,blueberries,etc.I would think you odds increase as your snow depth increases.At least they will be more confined to trails. There is a certain time during the fall when the leaves first come down that they love piggin' out on them . They really prefer the red sugar maple leaves . Just a thought.

I NEVER pass up any "surrounding" area of a clear cut.....unless it was SPRAYED with that DDT shyt.... But, what I've experienced is surveying the perimeter of clear cuts...25ft to 100 feet in the time/woods... that's where I see a lot of sign and animals..

@Buckman-1018 ай бұрын
Hi Alan, I couldn't even cut a fox track if I tried.Very quiet in the woods this morning.Most of my areas ,the wolves cleared out quite a few years ago.Then coyotes moved in and cleaned out the small game.Now they are gone also. I did run into partridge periodically. That area towards the end of the video really looked like a hot area to hunt.

Dale do you come across quite a bit of bear scat while you’re scouting? I’m always a little cautious when I find some and back out and find another area! 🐻
@Buckman-1018 ай бұрын
Thank you for the comment. My interaction with bear is on a constant basis,no matter where I go.You must remember,they own the woods.All they want to know is what I am doing in their domain.Not long ago I had to sit down and wait for one to quit smelling my fat bike.You simply talk to them,and they finally go away.They really do not have any effect on the deer that I am pursuing .There again,it is just my opinion. Like anything else,I'm just used to seeing them all my life,so you just respect them,and go on your way.

Similar to corn I have found mature bucks bed on the edge or transition of the clear cut. Doe and young bucks will bed in groups and be safe but a lone deer couldn’t feel safe when he can’t see what is in front of him even if he can hear and smell behind him. Thank you for the comment. You would be shocked when you see a buck running at full steam through thick woods.All you hear is antlers slapping the brush . Despite what many people say about bucks during the summer in velvet,being sensitive to brushy areas,I have areas where bucks live in the summer that use trails that are so thick with overhanging branches,that I am on my knees trying to stay on the trail.They basically are used to it.
