Great Video as always. For those of us that hunt "BIG WOODS" for sure this video is spot on! I've done it my whole life and I have a question?? Like you I have and still do hunt many different tracks of NF & SF (Public Land). I get tons and tons of buck pics on my trail cameras but not as many rubs as i would expect?? This isn't anything new to me and to be honest I do very well in these areas. BUT, I wonder why? It's a low deer density area as is most NF areas I hunt. I thought you or others could shed light on this.
@Buckman-1014 күн бұрын
I have the same observations that you have.Years ago I would travel to southern Illinois to bowhunt late season.It was actually hilarious to see all the rubs and scrapes,compared to my whole life up north. Very simple deduction.High population creates more competition which enhances territorial rights amongst the bucks. We simply don't have that type of competition in the bigwoods. Granted,you find a cutover area,and it brings in everybody.We know that.They become easy videos for everybody,but also helps to locate in vast areas. Generally speaking,you will have less sign than what you may notice in large populated areas. That is why I always say that if you find a certain buck located,you should concentrate on just him,because "flock shooting" in the Northwoods is just not happening. Remember,this is just my opinion.

Sometimes when I watch other KZbin videos that involve tracking in the snow they follow a buck majority in the day tracking it through the snow. Some of these videos show that the individual bucks would of bedded in multiple areas during their traveling.feeding bedding. But that's during the rut.travel-feed-bed.probably looking for does mostly during that time my guess.when it's not the rut pattern would be simular but more tight in a certain area.(Core).I think Bedding areas but not bedding spot. Depending on the pressure I think a mature buck would go to all 5 of potential bedding areas depending on how safe they feel.if I felt my home was dangerous I wouldn't be able to sleep.
@Buckman-1017 күн бұрын
Thank you for the comment Jon. Yes,I agree that a buck ,just like any deer may bed several times throughout 24 hours. The key is to distinguish where his main bedding are is. Up here with all the predators,buck is smart enough not to display himself in too many areas if he doesn't have to. Especially as snow develops he will become more contained to traveling on trails and back to his bedding area. Like you said also,if they feel safe in area ,common sense they will stay there if not being interrupted in various ways.

@alanruechel22408 күн бұрын
Ive learned that unless there is some wicked storm happening, buck beds are not as deep as one would assume, and they prefer an area with a splendid view
@Buckman-1018 күн бұрын
I does seem that way at times. As long as they feel safe.
@waltdelbo64458 күн бұрын
Dale that was awesome. As u and I discussed before, our mtn buck deer here typically bed just below the spine of a ridge. That seems to be their preferred bed I do find some that bed in pine/ fir thickets Great video thankyou
@Buckman-1018 күн бұрын
I bet that is second nature,for where you live walt.Have you figured out why that particular bedding pattern?
@waltdelbo64458 күн бұрын
@ it is my opinion and experience that being on the highground gives them sight for threats. Bedding just below the spine gives them the saytime up thermals for smell. They can hear most anything from just above them on the ridge. Its safe bedding. They will use a nice flat treewell like your example or, a deadfall etc

I'll try to stick to the instinct theory I've chased some pretty smart bucks over the years definitely makes me wonder but that's the part of nature I'll always be drawn to if I ever quit wondering then I should probably quit hunting thanks for the reply your wisdom is much appreciated

Good one Dale. I was out last weekend back tracking and looking for funnels for next years stands. Perhaps time to go a little further and try to single out specific big buck tracks.......if i can find em.
@Buckman-1018 күн бұрын
I don't know if you have snow where you live,Jim,but as it gets deeper it gets easier because they become more confined to those trails.Easier traveling for them. Ya,the bucks are out feeding but I noticed how private they are at times.

Great educational video as always my dad always told me that deer don't have the ability to reason after 40 years of chasing them in the big woods of northern Wisconsin I'm having a hard time believing that wondering what you're thoughts are on that my dad passed on 15 years ago sure would like to ask him why he believed that
@Buckman-1018 күн бұрын
Well Dave,I guess we could say they rely on instinct quite often.The funny part about that is the fact that do we really know the true definition for the word instinct.Or is it used by many of us more or less as a cop out. A fawn learns from its mother various habits throughout life,and also develops patterns that are created from time to time.Now through these habits and patterns they have learned to survive in order to pass on to their offspring.So when you see a deer react a certain way,do you see it as reasoning,or simply what they have learned. To be honest with you,can any one of us really define why they react a certain way?

Dale did you ever track and shoot a Buck with snow on the ground? Years ago I was lucky to find a big Buck track and followed it. Shot my biggest buck ever 9 pointer in the National Forest! But , now not too many deer seasons have snow. I learned this from the Larry Benoit way of hunting bucks. Another fellow that’s really good at it is Hal Blood. You would enjoy his videos. 🦌🦌
@Buckman-1018 күн бұрын
i do watch many videos of the trackers out east,including Hal. i used to hunt a cedar swamp with an excellent trout stream flowing through the middle.I was always able to track deer down into that swamp,and catch up to them.A very succesful area.The last buck i shot like that was in the swamp looking at me around a tree. A head and neck shot is all i had at 100 yards.Man i had Divine Intervention on that shot.

Dale it’s crazy how it all unfolds, everything you share is so true. But then we add in the human pressure. All normal goes out the window.
@Buckman-1018 күн бұрын
Sounds like mid winter before it settles down for you.Good luck with that.
@BowMadOutdoors8 күн бұрын
The early bow season mixed with bear season this year in Pennsylvania really put a damper on how deer bed and move, especially into the rifle season. The deer have not had a break from rut until end of rifle. Deer are still pretty leery and we’re lucky if they reach normal by late season
@Buckman-1018 күн бұрын
Wow,,,sounds like a lot of pressure.There must be some areas they are finding solitude.
@BowMadOutdoors8 күн бұрын
@ yes sir! Rifle season gets pretty wild here in South Central PA every couple of years the state will bring in nuisance black bears and drop them on State game land and those are the areas that get obliterated

Great bed you found there Dale. I hunt mainly hill country and that is the exact bed I typically find. Usually on a spur or point but sometimes lower if there is an open area out front. I think people assume all beds are scent based. Mature bucks use sight way more than people think in my opinion…
@Buckman-1018 күн бұрын
Hi Rich,how are doing? I agree with you.If they are content with the area,then they will stay.

@Buckman-10111 күн бұрын
Well you must remember that the sporting industry doesn't really get rich off of a guy like me. Merry Christmas just wanted say thanks for your videos nice to see old school tactics still used I'm afraid the younger generation is being taught to be killers instead of hunters keep up the great work wishing you a happy new year
@Buckman-10111 күн бұрын
Thank you David. You know,the hunting tactics presently is naturally controlled by marketing the sporting industry. Another words,put out videos that sell products that the hunter can't pass up.And various hunting techniques will revolve around those products. And of course our hunting style in the Northwoods probably won't sell a large amount of products. There again,if you have your own land,we'll I get that.A person probably would purchase a larger variety of products to enhance there hunting techniques. Anyway,I do believe David that many hunters in time need more than to just pull the trigger,so to speak. There seems to spawn a certain inquisitiveness in many people in regards to the whitetail's habits that may become more popular than we think.But simply need a little nudge to get out there and learn. I'm sorry,I tend to digress on certain subjects. Do have a Merry Christmas and a happy new year David.

@Buckman-10110 күн бұрын
Actually Dave,it's the only way I choose to pursue whitetail. To be honest,I played the game years back,and traveled around hunting,but my deer in the bigwoods still give me gray hair.If there is any room for more gray. I guess as long as a person out in mother nature's domain we all should be thankful for that.
