Why do many Buddhist teachers describe Vajrayogini as the one practice for our busy, hectic, terrifying times which can lead us, in one lifetime, to Enlightenment? Why is Vajrayogini the Sarva Buddha Dakini - the Dakini who is the essence of all the Buddhas? What are the ten benefits of her practice? How can we practice Vajrayogini now, if we don't yet have the empowerment and permission of a teacher? We answer these questions, and more, in our brief documentary on the great Dakini Queen Vajrayogini.
PLEASE NOTE: A kind commenter indicated there is an error in the hard-coded subtitle during the fourth line of the chant. It should read: OM NAMO VAJRA SANI AJITE APARA-JITE VASHAM KARI-NETRA HUM HUM PHAT (pronounced Pey in the Tibetan). Please turn on CC and select English Subtitles (this is Sanskrit, but we have entered the Sanskrit in the English) and display it if chanting along. (Full chant also below, as text).
Increasingly, modern life is almost too hectic for deep yogic practices that can lead to Enlightenment in one lifetime.
Today, most of us do not have the luxury of retiring to a cave for hermetic practice over many years.
Although all Buddhist practices potentially can lead to Enlightenment in one lifetime, Vajrayogini practice - above all others - is the one recommended by teachers for modern times.
Why?
Clarity and simplicity.
Brevity - yet a comprehensive practice.
Easy - yet advanced.
Her visualization is not difficult even for those who have trouble with visualizations.
Her practice is complete - containing all the 11 Yogas required to generate the Enlightened mind - yet can be accomplished in an astonishingly brief period of time.
Her practice doesn't require "retiring from the world" - in fact, it is encouraged to use our "daily lives" as an opportunity to practice.
One of the 11 Yogas of Vajrayogini is the Yoga of Daily Activities.
Another is the Yoga of Sleeping.
There is even the Yoga of Awakening.
And the Yoga of Tasting Nectar - which we can combine with our morning breakfast.
In other words, our daily, modern lives become the practice!
The ten benefits of Vajrayogini practice are also highly appropriate in modern times. Whether you are concerned with the suffering of daily life, the stress of "making a living" or even health issues, Vajrayogini practice is helpful in these practical ways. It is also the ultimate advanced practice - a complete path to Enlightenment exemplified in the 11 Yogas of Vajrayogini.
FULL EIGHT LINES OF PRAISE:
This is a praise that pays homage to Vajravarahi Vajrayogini who is the supreme wisdom of the Buddhas. In each line we are basically asking her to cut our delusions, our inner and outer obstacles, and our attachments to illusory notions of reality. She is the Queen Dakini who dances in Shunyata (emptiness) - and is the epitome of the concepts found, for example in the Heart Sutra (Often in her practice we chant the Heart Sutra Gate mantra first).
HUM and PHAT are common to all the lines. Hum means the Union of Wisdom and Compassion in the context of Dakinis and PHAT means to “Cut our obstacles” (or destroy, eliminate, help us see them as illusions, etc.)
OM NAMO BHAGAVATE BAGAVATE BAGAVATE VAJRA VARAHI BAM HUM HUM PHAT
OM I prostrate to Bhagavati Vajravarahi HUM HUM PHAT. (PHAT usually means “cut my delusions and obstacles)
OM NAMO ARYA APARA-JITE TRAI-LOKYA MATI VIDYESHVARI HUM HUM PHATOM Arya, queen of knowledge women, invincible in the three realms HUM
OM NAMO SARVA BHUTA BHAYA VAHE MAHA VAJRA HUM HUM PHAT
OM You destroy all fear of evil spirits with your great vajra HUM HUM PHAT
OM NAMO VAJRA SANI AJITE APARA-JITE VASHAM KARI-NETRA HUM HUM PHAT
OM You abide on the vajra seat, invincible, with overpowering eyes HUM
HUM PHAT
OM NAMO BRAHMANI SHOSHANI ROSHANI KRODHE KARALENE HUM HUM PHAT
OM You desiccate phenomenon (sense passions and attachments) with your fierce and wrathful female form HÜM HÜM PHAT.
(Brahma here, refers to illusory phenomenon (caused by passions and attachments from the sensory illusions) of our world, NOT to the creator god)
OM NAMO TRASANI MARANI PRABHADANI PARAJAYE HUM HUM PHAT
OM You conquer opponents by terrifying and desiccating demons HÜM
HÜM PHAT (*demons is inner and outer, opponents is all the 10 poisons)
OM NAMO VIJAYE JAMBHANI STAMBHANI MOHANI HUM HUM PHAT
OM You vanquish all those that stupefy, paralyze, and confuse HÜM HÜM PHAT
OM NAMO VAJRA VARAHI MAHA YOGINI KAME-SHVARI KHAGE HUM HUM PHAT
OM I prostrate to Vajravarahi, great yogini, dakini-queen of desire HÜM
HÜM PHAT

How does one get initiated to Vajrayogini practice?
@kaldol2lucky
@kaldol2lucky Жыл бұрын
@@nedyogi942 Sometimes a guru/ Rinpoche/lama gives a teaching, and u can attend that teaching. During that teaching, Rinpoche will recite the mantra, which u repeat after Guru, and u make a promise to recite the mantra 7 times, or whatever number, or unlimited times a day. U must recite the mantra every day, and for whatever reason u skip, u can make it up the next day. So if u promised to recite the mantra 7 times a day, then you recite it fourteen times a day, and so forth.

The only difference between an enlightenment person...is his or her ability to see everything in life as forms of enlightenment...whether U are bowing at a temple or feeding your pigs the medition is all the same. For example, Lord Krishna received enlightenment during a battle, while he was at war. Hah...

This channel is amazing. The most useful Mahayana/Vajrayana channel on youtube. Can I recommend something? Fudo Myoo seems to be virtually unknown in English. There are no thorough teachings of him on youtube, no instructions on how to properly chant any of his mantras, and nothing about any of his benefits besides some general stuff. So little, even though his image in Japan inspires awe. He's a fascinating Buddha. If you did some videos on him, it would be pretty groundbreaking in English. You would be basically single handedly introducing him to the west. Anyways, just a thought. Thanks for all the videos. Best, Khun Paen ;)

Sorry, missed replying on this. Yes, this video is pronounced Tibetan phonetics. (I couldn't find where we said it was Sanskrit? Yoko Dharma's chanting is Tibetan style, as transmitted by her teacher). You are correct, in Sanskrit it is not pronounced as Pey (or pay) but p-het --- like a hard p and aspirated h and a sharp exhalation of et . Sorry for any confusion. By the way, Fudo Myoo video is coming soon!

Thank you for watching! This is a praise to Vajrayogini, rather than her heart mantra, so as long as you visualize her in front of you, so you are offering praise to her, it is fine, and will plant the karmic seeds for hopefully finding a teacher to offer you the transmission in future. The actual heart mantra of Vajrayogini - even though it is found on KZbin - is generally not recommended for recitation prior to receiving her empowerment and permission, since the mantra contains the 32 syllables of the 32 Yoginis of her merit field, which are related to the inner body (chakras and so on.) It's not that it's forbidden, it's just not recommended. The praise in this video is public, and performed publically, and can be offered as a praise and blessing. Hope that helps.

Fabulous video, thank you! What would be the parallel in Hindu pantheon? Maha Kali?
@BuddhaWeekly
@BuddhaWeekly 6 ай бұрын
Thank you. There are shared symbols, because they arise from the same languages and cultures, but they aren't directly related, other than they both arise from wonderful spiritual paths. The reason why it seems like there are paralells, including is names, s the sharing of symbolism and Sanskrit / Pali languages. Here, shared symbolism might be the color red, or the third eye, or the skullcup or the Katvanga and other symbols. These are common stream symbols, shared by many systems. Then, there are also shared names and shared mantra words, but this arises from the concepts of the words themselves in Sanskrit. For example the word Yogini (Yogini, which is part of Vajrayogini's name is योगिनी, IAST: yoginī a female master practitioner of tantra and yoga (male practitioner is yogin). And The Vajra (Sanskrit: वज्र, romanized: Vajra, lit. 'Thunderbolt') which is a common symbol in many traditions (Buddhism, Hinduism, Jainism, etc). Unrelated to Vajrayogini, as a example, is Buddhist Yamantaka and Yama. Yamantaka is the Buddhist foe destroyer who destroys death, while Yama represents death. When we speak of Vajrayogini in the context of this video, She is a fully Enlightened Buddha. She has the katvanga of many Yogis, and is female, representing Wisdom, and so on. There are emanations of many goddesses and Yoginis who look very similar, but it is the teaching and the full package that determines their symbolic identity (identity being a "fluid word" since ego is an issue in Buddhism:-) Hope that helps. In kindness, BW>

@@BuddhaWeekly Thank you SO much for your prompt and enlightening answer! The reason for my outer question was an inner one: i'm starting to learn about Shri Vidja path of Hinduism (i'm just a six-grader at the most) and have wondered, while watching your video, if I could write out the prayer and say it at my altar. Which is set up to the feminine principle of the universe and contains various dieties and goddesses from different traditions (my views are innately eclectic). I don't want to step on the wrong toes, if you get my point, so felt to ask if this beautiful prayer could be said to the Goddess, or is the prayer specifically designed for this Vajrayogini Herself. I hope I've managed to explain this sufficiently well. Many thanks!

Thank you for the knowledge! How does one go about finding a teacher for the Tara way I’m currently in Arizona
@BuddhaWeekly
@BuddhaWeekly 11 ай бұрын
Thank you for watching. Tara is one of the most popular practices, so you'll likely find most Tibetan Buddhist teachers time-to-time offer teachings. Online you'll find it often. We have a large number of Tara teachings and mantras in our collection, but teachers such as His Eminence Garchen Rinpoche, His Holiness Sakya Trizin and others often teach live streamed (or pre-recorded, it doesn't matter). Gurus often are invited to local meditation groups as well (or if you are in one, you could suggest inviting a teacher.) The Garchen Institute, which is in Chino Valley, AZ (not sure how close this is to you!) has online teachings, many with His Eminence Garchen Rinpoche, and many, many Tara teachings (Green and White both... they do have a weekly White Tara practice as well online.) You could start by finding a teacher you feel connected to online. Once you feel that conneciton, you can keep an eye out -- or rely on your karma :-) for teaching schedules that bring them close to where you are. Considering where you are, you might want to check Garchen Institute -- his eminence and the other teachers are amazing and knowledgeable and very kind and compassionate. garchen.net Hope that helps.

can i chant the mantra of vajrayogini without iniciation ?
@BuddhaWeekly
@BuddhaWeekly 9 ай бұрын
Guidance on this varies by lineage (so, if you have a teacher, follow that guidance). The main requirement for any mantra is you must have Bodhichitta - the intention to benefit all sentient beings. That's according to His Eminence Garchen Rinpoche and other teachers. The other requirement for chanting mantras that you do not have empowerment for is to visualize the deity in front of you - you may not self generate (as that requires further initiations and instructions). (In other words, you are honoring, making offerings of mantras to the deity, but you are not trying to practice the sadhana or full meditation.) But, out of respect, some mantras should not be chanted - if they are Highest Yoga Tantras (there are some exceptions for practices considered beneficial to all beings, usually any emanation of the Padma or Lotus family of Amitabha and Avalokiteshvara). The reason is that most Highest Yoga Tantras require the teaching explaination and other requirements. So, it depends which Vajrayogini Mantra you mean. The longer three Om mantra (not in the video) is usually NOT recommended for recitation without permission. But, chanting the 8 lines of praise (which are in this video and include one of her shorter mantras) can be chanted according to several teachers, as this is a public practice. Of course, the goal is to plant the seeds of aspiration to have the karmic opportunity for empowerment in the future so that you can practice more deeply. Hope that helps. In kindness, BW.
