Why does Vajrapani Bodhisattva's name mean "indestructible hand of the Buddha?" Why is he also called the "Lord or Secrets"? Why is Vajrapani one of the three most important Bodhisattvas?
Come along with us now as we get to know this wrathful emanation of Vajrapani, the embodiment of the power of all the Buddhas.
After our brief documentary, listen or chant along with the Sanskrit version of his mantra - famous for accomplishing the Enlightened power, overcoming all of our obstacles.
Vajrapani’s name means, literally, “Indestructible Hand” - the Hand of the Buddha. “Vajra” literally translates as “indestructible diamond”, and “Pani”, in this context, means hand, so one translation of Vajrapani is Indestructible Hand. Another, less interesting translation is “Thunderbolt in hand.” He is also called the Lord of Secrets, because he guards the power of "secret mantra."
The benefits of his practice, according to the Tantra of the Supreme Origination of Vajrapani are:
If the disciple renders one obeisance to Vajrapani, he attains more merits than he would have secured through rendering numerous obeisances to myriads of Buddhas as many as the total grains of sands in ninety-two million Ganges Rivers… If he relies on Vajrapani as his Yidam Buddha and recites the Mantra, he will surely be protected by Vajrapani from all hindrances. No demons can hurt him, all illness will be cured, his merits will be increased and prosperity augmented. All his wishes will be fulfilled. Thus, the benefits of practicing this ritual are beyond description, nothing can afflict those who practice it. The practitioner of this ritual will also accomplish all the four activities - Pacifying, Enriching, Magnetizing and Wrathful. He will encounter no obstacles. Therefore, one should always rely on Vajrapani, take him as one’s shelter and refuge. Also, those who have chronic diseases will be cured through reciting the Mantra of Vajrapani.”
The Power Bodhisattva
He is one of the three great Bodhisattvas, together with Avalokiteshvara and Manjushri, who respectively represent the three important aspects of Buddha: Power, Compassion, and Wisdom.
He is not only important in Mahayana sutra, but appears in early Pali Sutta - Ambattha Sutta (“Pride Humbled”)- mighty Vajrapani, the Protector of Gotama Buddha Himself, humbled a prideful Brahmin:
“And at that moment Vajrapani holding up a huge iron club, flaming, ablaze and glowing, up in the sky just above Ambattha was thinking, “If this young man does not answer a proper question put to him by the Blessed Lord by the third time of asking, I’ll split his head into seven pieces!” The Lord saw Vajrapani, and so did Ambattha. And at the sight, Ambattha was terrified and unnerved, his hairs stood on end, and he sought protection, shelter, and safety from the Lord. Crouching down close to the Lord.”
Vajrapani, who belongs the Vajra Family of Akshobhya Buddha, is also often called Guhyapati , or the “Lord of Secrets”, in the context of Vajrayana, the “secret mantra” path. The secret element is more about “looking inward” and the tantric methods of understanding the true nature of reality - tantric insight into truth - than the idea of keeping esoteric secrets.
In the Vajra vidarana Sutra, Vajrapani’s “inward” nature is explained:
“Condensed within you alone,
Is the power and strength of all the Buddhas.
Manifesting in the wrathful form of the enlightened Vajra,
I pay homage to you Vajra Vidarana, the Subduer."

Among the images shown in the video, the four-armed form of Vajrapani Bhutadamara sometimes appeared. In the Sakyapa school, his sadhana is practiced to remove all obstacles to meditation. A wonderful exercise. But missing from the pictures was the Japanese form, Kongo Rikishi.

Which is the difference between "Hum Vajrapani Hum" and "Om Ah Vajrapani Hum Hum Peth" ?
@BuddhaWeekly
@BuddhaWeekly Жыл бұрын
They are both mantras of Vjarapani, and there are others, such as Hum Vajra Pey. It depends on lineage, but they all share in common the HUM (or Hung in Tibetan) which is the essence of all the Buddhas as it is the seed of the Enlightened Mind of all the Buddhas. The main parts of the mantra are "Vajra" and "Hum" which is the seed syllable of the Vajra family (which includes Vajrapani, Vajrakilaya, Akshobya) and usually the Om (which is in commmon to most mantras, and in full is spelled AUM which stands for the Body, Speech and Mind of all the Buddhas.) When you add Pey (or Phat) it means "cut" as in cut our delusions or "cut" our obstacles. Another variant is "Om Nilambara Dhara Vajrapani Hum Hum Phat" which translates to more or less "cut through the darkness of delusions." In other words, they are all similar. The most common is probably Om Vajrapani Hum as it contains Body, Speech, and Mind of the Buddhas, Vajra (Indestructible Dharma) and Pani (Hand) -- which is his name - and Hum, which is the seed syllable of the Vajra family. (Vajrapani can be translated as either Indestructible Hand of the Buddha - as Vajrapani represents the power of Shakyamuni Buddha and also the Five Buddha Families - or as Indestructible lightning bolt in the hand of" because he holds a Vajra in his hand.) (Lightning as a translation symbolizes the instant speed or power of Dharma teachings.) Hope that helps.

Tell me The Difference Between 1. Vajrapani 2. Padmapani 3. Mahakala 4 . The Shiva (Hindu God)
@BuddhaWeekly
@BuddhaWeekly Ай бұрын
Thanks. That's a very big question. I'd probably refer you to some of our other documentaries or our main website where we have 1100 full-length features on these topics. buddhaweekly.com I'm guessing you're asking because the appearance (wrathful and black) is similar between, for example Vajrapani (in his wrathful form) and Mahakala, etc.. The images in Thangkas and statues, and the emanations of the great Bodhisattvas are for our benefit and carry symbolism. To define the differences between these great deities is not a matter of appearance -- all Bodhisattvas can appear as anything, from God to animal to demon to human, anything at all, depending on our need. The black appearance signifies the poison being "remedied" is generally anger and hate. In other words, our obstacle that prevents us from progressing is our anger or hate. What is different? Vajrapani is the Bodhisattva of the Vajra family, Padmapani is the Bodhisattva of the Padma family (Amitabha's family) and Mahakala (generally) is an emanation of Avalokiteshvara (in some lineages it varies). These are symbols the great Bodhisattvas don't have limitations on form, and, as explained in various sutras (especially for example, Lotus Sutra), the forms are all skillful means for our benefit. Only to help us. So, if we would resonate with a peaceful, smiling Avalokiteshvara, that is how he (or she, since gender is also illusory in terms of Bodhisattvas) appears but if we need a swift "kick in the pants" type of parent -- he might manifest as Mahakala. If we need "power" he. manifests as Padmapani. Just as words and names identify a Bodhisattva, the images help us relate to them (but they are for us.) The Bodhisattvas and Buddha's can appear in Dharmakaya, Samboghakaya and Nirmanakaya forms... like I mentioned, too much to cover in one coment, so I'll kindly refer you to BuddhaWeekly.com or to other special-focus documentary films. For example, this intro to wrathful deities as a video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/eaGucmljZ5esi7c Or BuddhaWeekly.com, searh tool and search these deities for more info. Sorry, the comment's getting long. Hope this helps. In kindness, BW.
