Never Turn Your Back on a Friend is Budgie's third album, released in 1973.
This is the band's best known album and is notable for its inclusion of "Breadfan", the band's best-known song. Metallica recorded a cover version of "Breadfan" in 1988.
The album cover was done by Roger Dean, who has done much of the album artwork for progressive rock band Yes.
Tracklist:
1. "Breadfan" -- 6:10
2. "Baby, Please Don't Go" -- 5:30
3. "You Know I'll Always Love You" -- 2:15
4. "You're the Biggest Thing Since Powdered Milk" -- 8:51
5. "In the Grip of a Tyrefitter's Hand" -- 6:29
6. "Riding My Nightmare" -- 2:42
7. "Parents" -- 10:25

For some reason they just didn't get the air play? Like aerosmith, led zepplin, queen etc? I just happen to have a radio station in spokane washington! That played budgie, and many other bands that weren't mainstream! The same bands you hear on the classic rock stations now! I've always thought budgie kicked those band butts! That I just mention their body of work stands up today? The problem a lot of people have never heard them! That's the problem their needs to be a radio station that plays their music and others?

Also (along with crap label and possibly not caring that much for fame), that was because they were from Cardiff, Wales. That sole fact made it more difficult for them than should've they had been from Scotland like (also half-forgotten) Nazareth, or Ireland like Thin Lizzy, let alone England like Zepp or Purple. For a comparison, imagine your chances of getting to Formula 1 in early 1970s (assuming you were talented): A) being born in Milan, near Monza; B) being born in Siracusa, Sicily...

I always thought the first part of this sounds like a steam locomotive struggling to the top of hill only to career down the other side. Great great band, Tony's riffing and soloing are fabulous, his vocals on the second half are an unexpected delight. He should have sung more songs. Goes to show, if you wanted to be a riff meister in the early 70's, better hope your name was Tony.

So that's Tony singing in the second part? I was wondering about that. Really good voice, he has a more pleasant tone than Burke (whom I love but... well... )

The turnaround to the second (third if you include the drum solo) part of the song is so exciting, as good as Robin Trower's Too Rolling Stoned! :)

I saw Trower in a small town in southwestern Oregon around 2010....ish Awesome show! Bridge of Sighs is the most haunting chord progression in all of Blues Rock.

love me some Robin Trower, I hope to see him live while he's still around... legendary... loved his album with Jack Bruce (from Cream) and also loved his 2010 album Playful Heart... classic and modern at the same time, brilliant

I've been listening to this album since 1992. It never gets old. Every couple of years my friend (who discovered the album with me in college, and now lives in another state) and I have been trading the CD back and forth. I have the poster for the album cover framed on my wall, which once adorned our dorm room. This music not only takes me back, it rocks me in the here and now! Truly terrific piece of music, which so few people know about.

I live just up the road from what was TJs. Knew the owner, he used to run another pub called Langtons. Had the opportunity to see budgie in cardiff in 2006, but fell Ill . I really missed out. I have got into their music these last few years and think they are awesome.

New Year’s Eve, 1971, sitting in a circle around a turntable on the floor of some dudes house. I can’t remember how or why I was there, by myself With other longhairs, didn’t know anyone. We played albums til the Sun came up. Everyone was sharing whatever they had. Later we got some pizza’s. They next day I realized I needed people like this for friends, not the crummy friendsI’d been hanging around with. It was a new year, with a new realization. Met my Wife that year.

PS MOST WHO DIDN'T HAVE THIS ON VINYL DON'T KNOW THE 1ST 30 SECONDS OR 40 SEC'S OF BREADFAN HAS BEEN DELETED. IT OPENED WITH 'BIG BEN' CHIMING & THEN WINSTON CHURCHILL'S SPEECH SAYING "I HAVE NEVER PROMISED ANYTHING OTHER THAN BLOOD TEARS TOIL & SWEAT". i SO MISS THAT DUBBED INTO BREADFAN AT THE BEGINNING, IT SET THE TONE FOR THE ALBUM. ALSO THE SONG PARENTS IS SIMPLEY AWESOME :)

+Sgt. Pepper Ok I got that. Any other input. How many times do I need to say sorry. Ok, Ok you win! sorry sorry sorry sorry sorry sorry sorry sorry sorry sorry sorry sorry sorry sorry sorry sorry sorry sorry sorry sorry sorry sorry sorry sorry sorry sorry sorry sorry sorry sorry sorry. I think using capitals to alert someone they hit caps lock & 'a' letter simultaneously is rather like chopping down a tree next to a tree chopped down & calving on the 1st tree, I chopped down the tree next to the tree you chopped down because I don't like the fact that you chopped down a tree :) Please troll someone else now as you have used capslack every word you wrote by intent. Go play Within You Without You man you missed the whole message. Then play 'Let It Be' 14x message & mother Mary will come to you whispering words of wisdom Let It Be. You need to take Lucy to take the Skies Diamonds to understand Sgt. Peppers. If you did understand your user name you wouldn't use caps to alert someone to the fact that they did. Or do you believe in an eye for an eye till the whole world is blind?? Get a life man- lighten up lamo

Steve Harris: The progiest out of all the members in Iron Maiden (not calling Budgie prog by the way). But Yeah. I'm pretty sure 5:20 is where he got the inspiration. Or at least a possibility.
