From 1982 to 1987, Buick (yes Buick) used the Grand National to rise from overlooked GM family sedans, to the maker of America’s fastest, most powerful Muscle Car. The 1987 Buick Grand National Experimental (GNX), took the G-body auto to new heights as one of the baddest, blackest automotive triumphs in history.
This is everything you need to know, to get up to speed on the Buick Grand National.

I swear Buick is the strangest car brand, they've built their identity on making fairly conservative, boring cars for regular folks but every once in awhile they slam their veiny, three shielded dick down on the performance car market table as to say 'this isn't even our sort of thing, but this is how you make a fast car'. Smashed everyone in 1970 with the GS 455 Stage 1, the fastest muscle car of the era (appropriately named the 'Hemi Killer'), and then, as said in this video, used a then near unheard of engine configuration (V6 turbo) to make the second fastest production car at the time. I don't really understand you, Buick, but I look forward to whatever you come up with next.

hotwire96 That's something I've thought for years, but I really like the way you spelled it out. LOL. Buick and Olds, both, were like the red headed step children of GM performance, BITD. No matter how well they did, all of the money and attention went to their siblings, Chevy and Pontiac. Even Pontiac was treated as a little "less than" at times. All in the name of keeping the almighty Corvette on top of the GM heap. When Buick or Olds got withing range of effecting 'Vette sales, the big guys at GM said "nuh uh uhhh, no more R&D for you. Go to your room". They gave Pontiac a bit more latitude but they still kept their hands firmly on it's R&D throttle. I love all US muscle and I've never been a "GM Guy" per se , but I give mad props to Buick for basically rebelling and saying "F**K You, Dad! Suck on this, Chevy!" and building the GN and GNX. Awesome, innovative cars for their time.

The Grand National is the most underrated car at the time. Also, I bought an 86 stock, stock, I ran 13.1 at 105 mph, with a 1.96 60' time. Actually stock is lying a little bit, I had a Tin Man cold air kit. I ran that time, the temperature was 49 degrees and the humidity was like 20%, that helped I'm sure as the next time to the track it was in the 80's during the day and the best I did was 13.5 at 101 mph. The 235 hp and 330 ft-lbs of torque for the 86, definitely underrated. Especially the torque. Not sure what changed from 86 to 87 to get 30 more ft-lbs of torque. I did upgrade my turbo, injectors and chip and I was able to run 11.70 at 115 mph with a 1.79 60' time. Upgraded again, have yet to take it to the track.

The suspension drawing at 5:12 doesn't show the biggest suspension change on '87 GNX's only: the rear torque arm similar to 1970's Pontiac Astres and 1980's Camaro/Firebird... only they had it on the left side of the driveshaft and Buick put it on the right side where it belongs to force the right rear tire down!

I had always liked and admired the look of a Monte Carlo SS, but when I first set my eyes on a GN , the sweet clean Turbo sound and wha, wha, wha I asked the driver as he rolled by me , what is it a V-8 , He said no it's a V-6 , he gunned it, it squatted, chirped at the wheels , all I saw was it tail-lights and it disappeared into the night, I simply smiled and fell in Love.

Alot of people forget that back in the 1960s Buick built a big car called the wildcat, it had vents on the sides and the wildcat would hall ass in more ways than one. I watched a 1969 wildcat out run a 1989 5.0 Mustang back around 1991. and back then, that was the quickest car of the late180s early 90s next to the Grand National. It was not slow. But i watched that big buick cross the line beating that 5.0 . It wasnt by much but i believe it made a believer out of many of the buick powers if you got the certain right one.

I wonder how many people have any clue how the Buick turbo V-6 came about in the late 1970's ? I was part of the group that created the concept of the turbo Buick V-6 at GM Buick Flint Engineering in the 1970's and have a lot of documentation of the group and the development of the turbo engine

Loved the Video, I wish you had a picture of the super lame Dash, only up to 140 KM/H and the Boost indicator was an LED bank from a home stereo, But as a GM tech from 1987-2004 when I got into Teaching. The GN it is my one true love of leg shaking adrenalin after a rip around the dealership. The HydraBoost brake system was a pain but Oh what a car. Thanks for making this video I have shared it with my Grade 11's today.

I watched almost all of your Up To Speed vidios and Buick GNX is still my favorite car of all time. I first saw it in the mobile game called Racing Rivals back in 2013 and I fall in love with it, I still didnt changed my mind (I was 13 years old back then). One day I want to own GNX myself, but now GNX is very expencive and my country laws say that I cant import it here, so I am thinking of moving to USA only so I can own one.
